About this cabin rental

Originally constructed in the 1890s, this historic log cabin once housed local mining families for several generations. Today, the Stargazer has been meticulously remodeled for your enjoyment. Revel in warmth and solitude in this classic 4-bedroom lake-town chalet, offering all the comforts and conveniences required to make your mountain retreat memorable. You will have your two designated parking spots directly in front of the cabin. Please do not park anywhere else. Please be aware that this home, constructed in the 1890s, has undergone renovations. However, you may notice uneven or 'soft' floors in certain areas. For individuals with mobility challenges or elderly guests, this home may not be ideal as accessing certain bedrooms involves climbing stairs. Please exercise caution when using the staircase. Kindly consider this property details before booking. Thank you! We like to keep our cabins as fresh as the outside alpine air. If you need to smoke, you'll need to step outside to do so. There will be a $600 fine for any smoking inside the cabins. WANT TO BRING YOUR FURRY FRIEND? Let us know a little about your dog(s) and we should be able to accommodate with an adjustment to our cleaning fee. $100 cleaning fee per dog, maximum two dogs only. Sorry, no cats permitted. FIREPLACE Unfortunately, this amenity is a liability and this will not be available to use during your stay. THE WILDLIFE There are plenty of animals around the premises, including many deer, foxes, multiple species of raptors and other birds, armadillos, bunny rabbits, black bears, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, coyotes and much more! You won’t see all of these at the cabin, but if you get out on the trails, you might get lucky... INTERNET/CELL PHONE COVERAGE We provide STARLINK satellite internet on site with speeds of about 50-100 mbps. Nearly all cell service providers will have consistent and reliable 4G connections. FOOD & GROCERY The nearest large grocery store is about 30 minutes away in Leadville. It is recommended that you bring your food/drink needs along with you. During the summer months, there are some eating options just down the block. NATURE, WEATHER & TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS - Our cabin is remote. Most of the time a 2WD is just fine but during the winter/spring months a vehicle that can navigate mud, deep snow, ice and drifting snow is a must and 4x4 is highly recommended. - Please plan accordingly as we do not offer refunds due to road conditions and/or poor car choice. In winter months, storm/road conditions may delay arrivals or departures - Close-toed shoes are ideal for this high-mountain scrub landscape and a must in the winter/spring months. - We are located at 9,200 feet elevation - so please drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid altitude sickness. - Be prepared and pack lots of clothing layers so you can adapt to ever-changing conditions. Mountain storms come and go quickly. - Sometimes the wind kicks up to remind us of all the things we cannot control, but it usually settles down again within a few hours. - Wildlife is somewhat rare but has been known to wander through, so please do not leave food outside at night. OUTSIDE LIGHT Because the village of Twin Lakes is celebrated as a 'Dark Sky City,' everyone in town does their utmost to minimize the amount of exposed light outside their homes. For this reason, we only have a solar-powered light above the address to allow you to find the property but no other functional exterior light. Please bring a flashlight if you require light to be used outside. VIDEO CAMERAS To provide utmost safety to our guests and community, we have installed Blink video cameras at the exterior of both entrances. There is NO surveillance of any kind inside the home. RESPECT The Base Camp Cabin is located in a remote, historic mountain town. As visitors to the area, please think about your impact on our town and the small surrounding communities. Please respect full-time residents' privacy and solitude. Follow Leave No Trace guidelines when visiting and recreating in the beautiful outdoors, and please consider supporting local dining and shopping during your stay. NEED MORE SPACE? These cabins are owned and managed by the same people and are right next door: - The Charles Historic Hotel in Twin Lakes - The Boho Brothel in Twin Lakes Events are subject to approval. Twin Lakes, once a transportation hub between Leadville and Aspen during the mining days, was named "the most charming summer resort in Colorado" in 1885. This idyllic town offers a glimpse into a simpler, more peaceful time. The stunning views of Mt. Elbert, the second highest peak in the contiguous United States, provide a breathtaking backdrop for ever-changing light, including stunning sunrises and sunsets. Passing storms and surprise rainbows are common. Panoramic views of Twin Lakes, Mt. Hope, and Mt. Elbert make for an unforgettable experience. Enjoy a book and morning coffee while taking in the clear lake views and incredible sunsets over the tallest peaks in Colorado. Located 21 miles southwest of Leadville and 36 miles east of Aspen, Twin Lakes is a historic town that sits in the shadow of Colorado’s highest peak, Mt. Elbert. It overlooks the beautiful Twin Lakes and is situated along the "Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway" Independence Pass, one of the highest paved passes in the state. The area offers plenty of natural beauty and outdoor activities, including running, hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, rafting, fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. SKI RESORT DISTANCES: Copper: 56 minutes Ski-Cooper: 40 minutes Monarch: 1 hour 13 minutes Vail: 1 hour and 18 minutes Keystone: 1 hour 21 minutes Breckenridge: 1 hour 25 minutes TOWNS DISTANCES: Denver: 2 hours Buena Vista: 30 minutes Leadville: 27 minutes Salida: 1 hour Colorado Springs: 2 hours and 15 minutes Aspen: 1 hour We are accessible year-round. Our cabin is located on a county road that gets plowed when there's snow but we still recommend AWD/4x4 with good tire tread in the snowy months (generally December to April). Winter driving conditions on the highways leading to the cabin can change in very short amounts of time. We recommend checking the conditions before you start driving our way and plan accordingly. Colorado has some specific winter driving laws pertaining to tire requirements. The fine for violating the traction law is pretty expensive so we recommend that you familiarize yourself with the law before driving during the winter. Speaking of snow, this is the Colorado Rockies so be prepared! We do our best to plow the area in front of the cabin and shovel the walkway. However, the remote nature of this place can make these tasks delayed. We do provide a shovel in case you need to clear a path. There is no public transport to this location.
