Jul 2019We truly enjoyed our stay - the house was just as described and located in a cute, charming and very convenient neighborhood. The owners were great and answered our questions quickly and were incredibly helpful. Thanks!!

Oct 2019We really enjoyed our stay at Koto Inn. David was a fine host, the machiya was charming, and the neighborhood was quiet without feeling remote (the subway, a convenience store with an ATM, and a handful of decent restaurants are only a short walk away). With Gion just south and Downtown just west, we found Koto Inn to be the perfect base from which to explore Kyoto.

Nov 2019We had a wonderful peaceful few days in this traditional house. It was lovely waking up looking at the garden. We would love to visit again sometime!

Jul 2019The property is lovely with lots of character. The facilities are very good and everything was well kept, clean and worked well. The location is brilliant for exploring Kyoto. The neighbourhood has some lovely restaurants and is close to some great sights. And the subway and train make it easy to get everywhere else. The hosts were very nice and helpful.

Jul 2019The house is beautiful and in a great, very quiet location. For the most part, the amenties are modern and very good, and the owner and his assistant communicated very well and were very helpful. We had only a couple issues. The futons are quite thin, but using 3 of them solved the problem. Also, keep in mind - this is what I believe is an authentic machiya. This means you will be getting an authentic machiya experience! But it also means you will be getting up and down from the floor quite a bit, since there are no chairs which are not on the floor. Probably not an issue for most people, but I'm 58 and not in great shape, so it became a little wearing.
Overall I highly recommend this property!

Aug 2019Our stay at Koto Inn began in a panic because I left my phone on the train. David and Yoshiko were reassuring and most helpful in calling JR Rail to inquire about my phone and in ultimately making sure I received it before I left Kyoto. Every time I had a question, they answered right away. When doing laundry, I failed to close the door all the way and kept getting an error message. Our hosts immediately sent a friend over to figure out the problem. Even though it was my fault, they were gracious and kind. We loved the neighborhood restaurants they recommended. Loved the beauty of the Inn as well as the modern conveniences of a/c, showers, laundry, etc. Overall, a wonderful, restful, interesting stay.

Jul 2019My son and I had 12 days to spend in Japan. We initially planned to do a two city trip with Tokyo and Kyoto but after very useful discussion with the owners of Koto Inn we decided to spend the whole time there -- we did not regret this choice.
Koto Inn itself is a wonderful traditional house but with just the right amount of modern convenience (bath that fills at the touch of a button, washing machine, good internet etc.). It takes no time to settle and relax.
I think the best thing I can say is it wont be what you expect. This is a good thing. It takes a while to adjust to the contrast of being in the city of Kyoto then walking a couple of beautiful narrow streets to get to Koto Inn. You have the convenience of a great city location but the quiet tranquillity of a traditional house just minutes later. It is in a pedestrian zone so there is no traffic noise and it is generally very quiet.
The owners have obviously put a lot of thought and effort into the 'Koto Inn' experience and for my (17 year old) son and I it was perfect.
We used it as a base to visit the bulk of the 'must see' Kyoto locations and we walked to them most of the time even though the subway is close by and convenient.
Great food at good prices is also available nearby.
We had 12 days and never ran out of things to see and do.
We got into a rhythm of getting up early and going to the place we wanted to early. Most of the temples are free and either open 24 hours or early. Getting to them before 9 provides a much better experience as they are beautiful and tranquil places -- which isn't quite the same experience as when they get busy later in the day.
If you can, I would learn some Japanese, just 'good morning', 'thank you', 'one of those...', 'two of those...' etc. It is not strictly necessary but it seems that trying is very appreciated.
Everyone was friendly, helpful and genuine.
I just need to work out when I can go again!

Oct 2019Located in a private spot, amongst preserved historic machiyas, this place is beautifully decorated with traditional Japanese artwork and furniture.
It also has a nice small garden outside our bedroom. It has all the modern appliances, including washing machine and fully equipped kitchen. The host has thoughtfully provided everything we could possibly need, it really felt like a home away from home, Spacious and very clean; comfortable traditional futon bedding, air con available, good private shower and bath. Excellent wifi. Short walking distance to buses, subway station, convenience store. Host accessible and provided all information when required.

Nov 2019Koto Inn was ideal for a single traveller for an extended stay in Kyoto. Beautifully decorated, had everything I needed and more. Close to transport but the area is not too busy. I’d love to stay there again.

Dec 2019Koto Inn is in a perfect location -- a great home base for roaming Kyoto and seeing all the sights. It has great restaurants and bars nearby, too. Everything at the property was as advertised/shown in the pictures. Lastly, David and Yoshiko are wonderful hosts - they provided tons of recommendations for local bars, eateries, sights, etc. One of the most memorable meals on our trip came from their recommendation.

Aug 2019From the moment we stepped through the doorway we felt surrounded by a calm & peaceful harmony that innkeepers David & Yoshiko have so lovingly created. Their generosity of spirit in sharing this masterfully restored Kyoto merchant’s home, Yoshiko’s tranquil Zen garden and beautifully organized & abundant information about anything & everything you may want to do, see, eat or experience in the surrounding area was amazing. Nestled among this quiet Higashiyama neighborhood along a cobblestone pathway that was once the Old Tokaido Road, we truly felt we had stepped back in time. From enjoying study of the inn’s architecture, admiring the pieces of beautiful artwork & period furniture to enjoying a restful night’s sleep on futon (very comfy duvet & pillows too) in the tatami room, our weekend stay was the ultimate Japanese cultural experience. But it was also super to enjoy great water pressure & temp in the shower the next morning, sink into a relaxing bath with auto heated water after a long day’s trek & be pleasantly surprised when the toilet did its polite little auto flush. David & Yoshiko have provided all the comforts, amenities of home and modernity with updates designed to carefully preserve the antiquity and structural integrity of this historic gem. You’ll also find everything you need in the well fitted kitchen should you decide to eat-in during your stay. Ours was too short not to try a couple of their recommended restaurants-CHOICE was totally worth the visit-and we stumbled across a couple of new ones as well among the plethora of nearby dining options.
For these two middle age recently arrived expats, Koto Inn was a most welcome & relaxing reprieve from the hustle-bustle of Tokyo. Perfect place for us to begin our days of meandering along the nearby canals, through the markets, temples, shrines and neighborhoods and end our evenings enjoying the solace, stillness & tranquility it provides. We’re already looking forward many more visits to Koto Inn during our time in Tokyo thanks to our wonderful experience & generous hospitality of David & Yoshiko!

Dec 2019First, there's location, location,. location. You are in a quiet neighborhood yet very close to markets, sushi parlors, museums, and transportation, within walking distance of many sights. The apartment is very well equipped for cooking and a delightful place to relax. David is very easy to reach and most helplful. If a soaking tub means more to you than a tv, this is the place!

Sep 2019Beautiful, warm place. My son felt very much at home and we were relaxed. Enjoyed eating in one night as well. A few good restaurants in the area to meet your needs and more action in Gion or west of the river. Beds were very comfortable and all appliances in home very modern. A/c is available. Beautiful mix of old and new in this restoration.

Jul 2019A wonderful renovation in a great location that made our stay in Kyoto special. It was great to have both the traditional bedroom and living space as well as modern kitchen and bathroom facilities. After long days of sightseeing it was lovely to relax back in the calm of the Machiya.
David left many useful suggestions of places to visit and places to eat and was always quick to answer any questions we had. Recommended
