Nov 2018We thoroughly enjoyed our week at the Black Pearl. The bungalow is well-equipped and well laid out. Things worked the way they were supposedly to- lots of hot water (great shower), very modern updated kitchen and nice lighting effects throughout. There was an issue operating the tv, which was a puzzle we never completely solved. We particularly appreciated the large windows on all sides of the house that not only let in great light, but also allowed constant breezes that made the air conditioner almost unnecessary (although when needed it worked well). There is a nice sense of privacy. You can snorkel directly off the deck. If you want some idea of how many fish are in front of the deck, drop a bit of bread over the railing and you’ll find out quickly. Sitting on the deck watching the sunset never got old. There’s no need to take a sunset cruise- it happens in front of you every evening. The manager Nir was a phone call away and there when needed. You do need a car as others have mentioned. Driving on the one road is easy and you’ll stop frequently to admire the views. One final note- it may have been the time of the year, but we sat outside for a week and saw zero mosquitoes. No need for insect repellent, which was nice. We have rented homes in various parts of the world and recommend the Black Pearl without hesitation. We waited many years to see Bora and mark it off our bucket list and the Black Pearl helped make it worth the long wait.

Sep 2019We rented the Black Pearl for our 20th wedding anniversary. It was the best decision!
Don’t waste your $ on the large resorts!! The Black Pearl is your home away from home. We arrived to find an extremely clean and updated bungalow sitting over the water. The location is great. It sits on the north side of the island, away from the bustle of town. Be sure to rent a car from Nir, he is the point of contact for the house. Town is about a 10 min ride. There are several grocery stores in town that you can get pretty much anything you want. We probably went to Chin Lees every day.
The bed was great, the shower was large and wonderful. The appliances were up to date. The lighting was perfect!
We were so happy about our decision to rent and would do it again in a heart beat. Nothing beats waking up to a sun rise over the lagoon - we’ll except the sunset!

We loved the property and the location was simply spectacular. Thank you for opening your space to the world! We truly enjoyed our time in Bora Bora. Nir is a gem and was always helpful.

Oct 2019We loved staying in this overwater bungalow on the main island versus on a Motu. We are avid snorkelers so particulary enjoyed that we could snorkel right off the deck. We also were quite amused that we could be picked up at the bungalow dock by Pure Snorkeling for our half day snorkel outing to see manta rays, eagle rays and an extremely beautiful and clear water coral garden.
We also like to kayak but are used to sit-on-top kayaks where you do not have to worry about water loading in to the vessel. We were a bit disappointed about the kayaks at the bungalow as they were not sit-on-tops and were missing their scupper/hatch tops so we worried about them filling with water when we were out so didn't end up using them. That was a minor disappointment compared to how much we loved and enjoyed everything else about staying in the bungalow.
Nir made checking in and checking out so easy and supplied us with a phone to reach him for questions which we greatly appreciated. We also rented a car from him which worked out very well. The bungalow is well appointed for vacation living, with lovely kitchen, comfortable master bed and bath. We particularly enjoyed lounging out on the lanai watching a variety of boats pass by as well as lovely sunsets. It was very difficult to leave. This is a terrific place to stay on Bora Bora -- we definitely hope we can do it again sometime!

Jul 2021We loved our stay at the Black Pearl. The pilotis is amazing and beautiful, and we were very comfortable spending some days just hanging out and relaxing there. It was wonderful to wake up slowly in the morning, put on snorkel & fins, and swim off the lanai, with coral and fish awaiting me. Two weeks was an excellent length to stay, because we had enough time to do everything we wanted, yet plenty of decompression time. We never figured out how to use the TV, but it was not really needed. Nir took care of tuning up the gas grill pronto, although we never got to meet him. We had missed the first boat to town from the airplane (trying to dig sunblock out of my bag! Silly.), so an hour later, we found help contacting Nir's wife to come back an hour later with the keys, and she provided the cellphone that got us started. It's amazing making friends right off with local folks, who were astounded to meet an American that spoke French easily. Vive la différence ! After French Polynesia's lockdown, everyone was extremely glad to welcome visitors back to the island, although they take all precautions to keep their current COVID rates at zero. Taxis were a fantastic way to get around--drivers are fabulously helpful there.

Aug 2020We looked at a lot of places before we chose Richard's 3 bungalows and we definitely chose the right accommodations. Everything about it was right. The location, the price, the beauty, the hosts, the recommendations the experience were all extremely on point. The place is beautifully decorated. Our property managers were easy to communicate with and get in touch with and were available for every question and request. They rented a car to us and gave us a phone to use locally. They set up everything we needed and their website had suggestions for things to do on the island that worked out perfectly for our group. Waking up in the morning and watching the sun rise on the deck while having breakfast by the water was divine. We were able to kayak and swim right off the deck. We used the barbecue grill to grill in the evenings. It was just such a perfect trip thanks to these bungalows. It couldn't have been better anywhere else. We are lucky that they were available for our group. If you see that it is available, don't even hesitate. Book it immediately!!

Aug 2019We just got back a couple of days ago from staying at Richard’s place, the Black Pearl. Our first time ever in Bora Bora and we picked the perfect place to stay! Great location, easy access to everything on the island. Nir, the contact person in Bora Bora was amazing. He picked us up from the shuttle, got us our car, gave us all details, etc. he was so helpful and nice!!
The property itself was exactly what we expected. It had everything we needed, was very clean, spacious and just what we wanted for our getaway!
Will be coming back and will definitely stay here again!

Jul 2022We had a fantastic time at the Black Pearl for our honeymoon. The bungalow was very lovely and fairly private. There is a street directly in front of the home which can often be noisy, but the ocean waves tended to drown out a lot of the sounds. There was also so much sea life living directly under the bungalow (an octopus, a huge eel, hundreds of fish). It was awesome to be able to snorkel right off the dock. The property manager Nir and his wife Tiare were wonderful. Always available if we needed anything. They gave us a local cell phone to use during our trip and we also rented a car from them, which is a MUST if you stay at this bungalow, because you are a 15 minute drive from everything. All in all, our honeymoon was fantastic. Definitely do the sunset cruise/dinner at St James with Moana Adventures and also the all day snorkeling experience with private motu BBQ. Those were amazing activities.

Nov 2022Very nice overwater bungalow—one of the best we’ve stayed in. Very comfortable and lots of beautiful fish right below us, like having our own aquarium. Was a little noisy in the morning with both street and water traffic, but nothing we couldn’t live with. Lots of good restaurants nearby, and parrot fish is our new favorite fish. Nir was wonderful to work with. We had such a relaxing and enjoyable stay.

May 2019This was home was everything promised. The property is wonderful. The interior was as pictured and in like-new condition with lots of wood, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, etc. There is both a tub and large shower. The bedroom and living room have views out over the back deck. The AC worked great and the location was quiet allowing us to sleep in each morning. The exterior was wonderful with an amazing back deck offering views of stunning sunsets. We could swim and snorkel off the back deck (we have snorkeled in Oahu and Kauai and the snorkeling from the Black Pearl was comparable to the best snorkel spots in Hawaii.) Nir met us at the airport shuttle drop off and left us with a rental car full of gas. He was also available to answer questions and give advice. We enjoyed exploring the islands (rented a boat, hiked, dived, snorkeled, visited other beaches, and dined at various restaurants). We generally ate breakfast and one other meal at the Black Pearl and ate out for one meal per day. This made the vacation a real value because dining out generally costs $75-$150 per couple with drinks. I would rent the Black Pearl again in a heartbeat. There are only two negatives worth mentioning. The front doors is kind of rusty which is to be expected in an over-water location. The other is the bed mattress was certainly a quality mattress, but may be getting close to replacement time. These were both very minor, did not spoil our trip, and worth mentioning only as an indication of how great everything else was by comparison. Of note, we followed up our stay with time at one of the resorts which cost us (with food and lodging) triple or quadruple the amount. While that resort was next level, it does show the value of the Black Pearl. On our next trip, we would do the same again but if I could do only one or the other, I would choose the Black Pearl because the location on the main island allowed us to better explore the island rather than be stuck on at a resort on a motu. I could not recommend the Black Pearl more and will be telling all of my friends and family about it. It was bar far the nicest rental we saw. You won't be disappointed. We hope to return soon.

Jan 2020This was all I had imagined and more! The photos don’t do the Black Pearl overwater bungalow justice. We loved the covered lanai and spent hours there reading, eating our meals and watching the boats go by. We also loved snorkeling right off the deck and saw so many amazing fish right in front of the bungalow! Everything you need is here. The kitchen is well-equipped for all your cooking. There are two grocery stores relatively close as the island is very small. We took Richard’s advice and did the Bora Bora Tupuna Jeep tour and highly recommend it. We also splurged and ate out our last night here at Fare Manuia and enjoyed every bite! It was definitely a trip of a lifetime and we would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Jun 2019This property was used as a honeymoon location and didn’t disappoint. The weather was alittle disappointing but couldn’t even take away from the absolute beautiful private location. Little things went wrong but Nir and Richard were immediately on top of everything. Would book this place again in a heartbeat.

Apr 2022This property was everything that we had hoped it would be. The process from start to finish was easy and simple as the manager on site along with his wife were exceptionally helpful with all of our needs and questions. If you are looking for a getaway that you will remember for the rest of your life, then the Black Pearl in Bora Bora is that place. I would/will recommend this property to everyone I know. It was that good!

Nov 2018The view surrounding the Black Pearl is hard to comprehend until you are physically on the property. Look out the windows in the living room and bedroom, and you enjoy a full view of the gorgeous turquoise water and boats going by in the distance. Stand on the back deck of the Black Pearl and look over the railing at the clear shallow water below, and you can see all of the life on the lagoon floor; late afternoon is a good time to see various fish swim by, and it's hard to tear yourself away to go to dinner in time to watch the sunset. The two kayaks available at the Black Pearl are another way to enjoy the peaceful shallow water around the Black Pearl, even for novice kayakers. And of course, snorkeling in the area around the Black Pearl is like having your own lagoon.
The Black Pearl's privacy is a great advantage. One day during our vacation, we rented a pontoon boat and explored other parts of the lagoon, including those around the hotel area. The houses on the water there are clumped together closely, with long shared walkways, a huge contrast to the privacy of this single home with its single walkway. The Black Pearl is a wonderful retreat for those seeking privacy, yet still wanting to be able to drive to wonderful restaurants and the well-stocked Chin Lee's grocery.
And if it rains, you still have a great view from the covered deck and a wonderful well furnished indoor space with high quality appliances in the kitchen and a beautiful walk-in shower in the bathroom. The owner supplies a cell phone to contact Nir in case of problems, but otherwise you are free to enjoy this amazing private place. Just make sure you stay as long as you can.

Dec 2019There is absolutely no better place to stay in Bora Bora. Everything was perfect. We rented a car from Nir who was waiting for us at the dock and was easy to communicate with. Almost all our meals were cooked at the bungalow with the high end appliances. The bed was amazing and even the shower was top notch. The kayaks were fun and the snorkeling was great! Tons of fish, clams, coral and even a resident eel. We watched stingrays swim by right off the deck. The only bad thing was having to leave. Honestly, it was better than I could have ever imagined!

Jun 2021There are basically two ways to experience Bora Bora. The first is by staying at a luxury resort paying huge dollars to be on a scenic island Motu where your time and money are spent doing resort activities and eating resort food. For a honeymooning couple, this is just right. For more seasoned travelers a better way is to rent a private home. You experience the beauty, culture, and soul of the place by meeting local people. You can count on a once-in-a-lifetime experience staying at the Black Pearl Bungalow. It offers you a local experience and a luxurious base camp for doing it.You have an overwater location where you can swim, snorkel and kayak without leaving the property. You experience ocean life up close as you are visited by colorful fish and sting rays that swim up to the lanai. A multitude of interesting boats passes by all day.You have a bungalow recently upgraded to very high standards with a large living area, a huge bedroom and a lovely custom kitchen, all tastefully decorated with authentic Tahitian art. It has air conditioning and a huge ceiling fan. The interior combines tropical hardwoods, bamboo and glass tiling the color of the lagoon. The kitchen has everything you could want. The bedroom has a beautiful canopy bed and plenty of space for your clothing. The bathroom has huge shower and a washer. Each room is lighted with fixtures that appeared to be professionally designed by a lighting expert. There is an entertainment center and guides for activities to do, places to visit and historical information about Tahitian culture including a Polynesian cookbook full of authentic recipes. Staying at the Black Pearl provides you the services of Nir and Tiare, the on-island caretakers of the property. With their hospitality you will leave feeling you've made new lifetime friends. For the cost, the Black Pearl is a bargain compared to resorts. Because it is on the main island you have complete control of your time without needing pricey shuttles. Much of our trip wouldn’t have been possible from a resort. Instead, we used the savings to pay for activities we love. The Tahitian people are so friendly. Many know Richard and Nir and showed even more joy when they heard we were staying at the bungalow rather than a resort. Rest assured you are renting from a well-respected man. Before you choose where to stay, think about who you are and how you travel. Note: due to space constraints here the full report is on TripAdvisor.

Nov 2022The property was larger than I expected, certainly bigger & more fun than a hotel room. Enjoyed its Polynesian art. Fun feeding bread & french fries to the fish from the balcony & watch them come out of hiding. The host was very friendly & accommodating. He lent us a cell phone for any questions. Definitely need rental car.

Sep 2022The bungalow was paradise!!! We loved our stay here and didn’t want to leave. Nir met us at the ferry and gave us the keys and a rental car and was a great host and helped us with all the questions we had. All our tours picked us up directly from the bungalow and the water tours picked us up directly from the back porch. The bungalow had Amazon prime so it was great getting to watch movies at night. Another thing I loved was that the house had a security alarm system so we felt very secure staying here. All in all one of the best vacations and places that we’ve ever stayed!!!

Nov 2021The Black Pearl was beautifully appointed. Granite countertops, induction stovetop, all of the kitchen gadgets one would want to live in Bora Bora. Comfy bed, linens and towels, walk in shower. We refrained from using the TV, opted for conversation on holidays, but it certainly was tempting. The large deck overlooked a coral garden with an octopus, many small fish and some larger ones as well. Fun to watch anytime! The ceiling was amazing! About 40’ high in Polynesian style, wide wooden boards, finely cut and stained a warm brown. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!!!! An absolute pleasure, Maururu Richard!

Aug 2022The 5* reviews accurately reflect how amazing this place is and the pictures do not do it justice. The rental is clean and huge, and the deck is amazing. Many many fish can be seen right off the deck. We saw sharks, huge parrot fish, octopus, sting rays, eels and thousand of other fish right there. The coral is a fish nursery for sure. Nir is just incredible, a wealth of information and always available for anything. Rent a car from him he will guide you on trips, restaurants etc. he picked up us and dropped us at Matira beach until we could check in and then gave us the car. Matira beach is a true gem, amazing coral for snorkeling and miles of waste deep perfectly blue bath tub esque water. The snorkeling trip was amazing-manta, eagle, sting rays, sharks swimming by us in 3ft of water. Had it all. We also did a deep sea fishing trip and a trip to tupai, the uninhabited heart shaped private island dubbed the most romantic island in the world. It was an incredible, only Nirs friend has permission to go, not cheap, but truly a once in a lifetime trip.

Jan 2021Spent almost two weeks in French Polynesia. First part of the trip was spent at 5 star resort in Tahiti. The last 4 nights we traveled to Bora Bora. Original plan was to stay at another 5 star resort in an over the water bungalow as we did in Tahiti but then found the Black Pearl on VRBO. The pictures and the many five star reviews looked great. Communication with the Owner and the Property Manager was great and so we booked the place. Please note we are also Owners of a beach front VRBO Premier Rental Property and have stayed at other VRBO Premier Properties in Hawaii, Mexico and California. Arrived at the Black Pearl at 4pm on the day of check-in (official check-in time) only to find the house dirty, food left in the refrigerator and pantry, ants in the house and the house smelled like urine. Owner told us it was a moldy smell. The house we saw in the photos was not the house we arrived at. We were disappointed and due to our limited time in Bora Bora we left after one hour. Let the Owner know the next morning that the Black Pearl was not acceptable and that we had left. He was not pleased with us just leaving without notice or the opportunity to send over a cleaning crew to perform the deep cleaning that was really needed. In the end, we did not want to spend any additional time in the middle of a problem that was not of our making. We did ask the Owner about a refund. We exchanged some rather unpleasant emails and our request was denied. He only wanted to point us back to the rental agreement and what we had agreed to (without seeing the house in person) and had no interest in resolving this amicably. For those who are not familiar with the VRBO process, we should have lodged a formal complaint with VRBO within 12 hours of arriving to get them to help us with this situation. Again, did not want to spend any more time dealing with this and simply moved on.The Owner informed us we could NOT review the property as we did not stay there. We stayed for one hour and that was enough. We paid $X,XXX for services not rendered. We are entitled to write a review about our experience. Had the Owner done the right thing and simply worked with us, all of this could have been avoided. Ensure you understand the rental agreement you sign with this Owner. He is going to throw this in your face when you complain or say anything that he is not in agreement with even if his Property Manager agrees the condition of the house was not acceptable.

Again, did not want to spend any more time dealing with this and simply moved on.
The Owner informed us we could NOT review the property as we did not stay there.

Mar 2019So many exceptional features - here were some of my favorites:
* Two kayaks, wonderful for early morning Motu exploring!
* BBQ was new and worked well
* Bathroom lighting and mirrors were fantastic
* Kitchen was very modern
There was a short list of minor & easily addressable issues we had, none of which were serious enough to let Nir know about until the end - he was very receptive and I'm sure will address them that same day.

Oct 2022Place was excellent. Exactly as advertised. Had a great time with the kayak, and close to beautiful snorkeling sites.

Apr 2022Our stay was fantastic. The entire island is a haven for relaxation. Daily sunrise snorkeling from the deck was our favorite, there is lots of coral around the house and it's full of bright, colorful fish. Sunsets from the back deck are colorful and not to be missed. The house has every cooking gadget and appliance you could imagine. We only ate at a restaurant twice since cooking was so easy. Chin-Lee Market is open until 8 pm and has a wide selection of food. Nir and Tiare are very welcoming hosts, they have recommendations, they give you a smartphone to use, are always available to help with questions. Definitely rent a car from them, it's the best deal around and the car is very nice. A few quirks to mention to help other guests. The DVD player doesn't play USA-formatted discs, and the television has no satellite channels, streaming only. The instructions were confusing but a call to Nir cleared it up. Just hit the home button on the remote and log in to your Netflix or Amazon account for streaming. We didn't think we'd watch much TV but appreciated it once the sun set and the insects started biting. It was nice to retreat inside. The BBQ wheels fell off when we pulled it out from the wall and it cooked unevenly. But it still got the job done. I imagine the salt air is harsh on it. We brought our own snorkel gear and floaties with a rope to tie them off to the dock. I'm glad we did because we used them several times a day. We highy recommend staying at the Black Pearl, it was truly a great place.

Sep 2020Our stay at the Black Pearl in Bora Bora was fabulous! This vacation was nearly cancelled due to current world conditions, but we persevered, and made it happen. And all of the hard work paid off. Our bungalow was beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Everything that we could have possibly needed was there. We snorkeled everyday right at the bungalow. And the view from the lanai was breathtaking. I don't think I have ever seen water those colors before. And we did whatever we felt like doing, whether it be swimming, hiking, fishing, going on excursions, or just relaxing and enjoying the views. The owner was very understanding, reachable, and helpful. I would definitely recommend the Black Pearl to anyone who needs a little paradise in their lives!

Oct 2022My wife & I stayed 8 nights at the Black Pearl for 8 nights and loved every minute of the experience. We grabbed groceries and had everything we needed at the bungalow to make meals & enjoy adult beverages with a million dollar view. The grill on the lanai was my favorite for the fresh fish we picked up at the grocery store. Just sitting on the lanai watching the boats go by or jumping in for a snorkel was our favorite way to spend the days, but we did venture out and explore the island most days (definitely rent a car from Nir so you can get around). The bungalow was clean and had everything we needed, but it's all about the location and that view from the lanai. Richard handled the reservation process and answered questions quickly. Nir met us on arrival with a rental car, helped arrange a couples massage on the lanai (fantastic!!), and was only a text message away if we had any questions. I actually feel sorry for the people trapped at the big resorts who didn't get the chance to "live local" in paradise like we did.

Jun 2019My wife and I spent 8 nights at the Black Pearl. Everything about it is wonderful. We sat out on the back porch and watched the sun rise and sun sets and everything in between. Used the on site kayaks and snorkeling gear. Everything at the Bungalow worked as it should. Everything we needed was there. Mr. Nir also gives you a cell phone to use if you need. Mr. Nir is available if you need info. If you choose to cook for yourself you can do that with the provided kitchen and BBQ. There are 2 grocery stores just down the road towards Tapatee. We did that 1 night and for breakfast, We chose to eat several meals at the food trucks /trailers. (we recommend you try them as a substitute to the tourist restaurants) There are also places called Snacks to eat at, They are established spots They are good also. We got a car from Mr. Nir and were very glad we did. it makes it easy to enjoy the whole of the Island. Mr. Nir or his wife will pick you up at the Boat dock (you have to take the Big boat from the airport to the Main Island, it is free and not one of the resort boats) with the car and within minutes you are on your own to enjoy your stay. We enjoyed just driving and seeing what the locals were doing. There are 5 different areas of the Island and each one had locals practicing local dance in the evening. (free Polynesian dance show). We are very glad we chose to stay at The Black Pearl as apposed to the Resorts(hut cities). Most of them are not attached to the Main Island and require a boat ride to get here.

Aug 2022My new husband and I spent our honeymoon here. Not only was booking with Richard easy, the entire trip was made simple and the bungalow was better than what we imagined. If we ever make it back we will definitely be booking with Richard again and we will be suggesting this stay to all of our loved ones.
