Dec 2019Wow, Hale Mohalu exceeded expectations in every way. The property, or estate rather, is wonderfully cared for and very private. Michael was the consummate host, who was genuine, kind, and friendly but also gave us privacy as well. He created beautiful touches of detail everywhere within the home and on the property that did not go unnoticed. The pictures do not do this place justice. The hottub, the wonderfully stocked kitchen and bathrooms, etc. made the place feel a lot more like home than any place we have ever stayed. So grateful for the visit and we look forward to returning to this extraordinary property! Thanks, Mike!!!

Jul 2022When we arrived at the house we couldn‘t believe our eyes, it was simply beautiful. Our boys (5 & 7) immediately took off their clothes and got in the outdoor tub, The adults enjoyed the view! We could see the ocean in the distance and we had never seen a garden as beautiful as this one before! It is even better than in the pictures! Every morning we sent the kids to find some fresh avocado/mango/papaya… And they never came back empty-handed.Michael, the property manager was also very helpful whenever we needed something and he answered all of our questions.All in all we would definitely recommend this house if you like being surrounded by nature and can live with the WiFi being a bit slow at times . If we come back to Big Island in the future, we will definitely stay at this wonderful place again!

Sep 2019What an absolute joy to make this little piece of heaven home for a week. The house was simply amazing and the grounds are spectacular. Highly recommended if you want to get off the grid and check out for a bit of time!
We spent the majority of the week relaxing, enjoying the weather and wandering around the grounds, We ventured out a couple of days to Volcanoes National Park and ventured north to the falls on another occasion.
The beautiful black sand beaches are a very short drive, less than five minutes.
Michael, the property manager, was courteous and mindful of our privacy. All in all a great stay!

Aug 2021We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this wonderful vacation home! The home and gardens go beyond words and my family loved roaming the property checking out the various tropical plants/trees. The house itself has everything and was very comfortable for our family of four (could easily sleep 6 or more). The website/photos don't do this amazing property justice, as it was more peacful/beautiful than the photos portrayed. Also, the property manager, Michael, was very helpful with local knowledge and even went out of his way to mail back an item that was left. Don't hesitate to rent this garogeous vacation home for your Hawaii vacation!

Nov 2019We love peace and quiet, natural beauty, and privacy: This property has it all. The garden (or rather: the entire estate) is beautifully designed and kept up. A perfect blend of natural beauty and groomed garden. An absolute pearl. Sitting on the deck, watching the sun rise, enjoying the spacious views on many beautiful trees... It was absolutely wonderful. Mike was a huge blessing. He hit the balance between availability, sharing knowhow, and respecting privacy 100%. Super grateful for the opportunity to stay. It was unforgettable experience!

Jun 2019We loved this colorfully eclectic Hawaiian home set in a large, gorgeous, perfectly manicured tropical garden! The location was remote and very private, but still convenient enough to all the eastside activities. It was nice to be off the grid, yet have practically all of the amenities one would expect of a luxury retreat. We were even able to conduct a business conference call and access the internet as needed. The large deck with its unique soaking hot tub and peaceful garden views was oh so enjoyable. We even had a view of the ocean in the distance. Keep in mind that this cottage sits in a rainforest, so you will appropriately see lots of birds, insects, little lizards, etc., and hear a variety of jungle fauna noises. It’s all part of the package, and we loved it! The manager answered our questions quickly and stopped by our first morning to greet us and make sure we had everything we needed. The friendly kitty stayed outside during our stay, but would have gladly joined us inside, if invited. A wonderful experience all around!

We loved the off-grid experience (without missing out on any of the essentials) and the communication with Michael was flawless. Dipping into the (for us intentionally not heated) tub after a long day exploring the island was just perfect. Love to be back some day!

The property is so beautiful and I love living in such a beautiful place with nature. Mike gave us a wonderful educational tour of the property. We also got to cook with ingredients from their veggie garden. We missed out on our botanical garden touring but felt that this more than made up for it.
The kids and some adults really enjoyed the hot tub. I loved that we were off grid but also found so much appreciation for 5X9’s electricity availability we get from the towns & cities. I would stay here again to unplug.

Jun 2019We came for our honeymoon and we were NOT disappointed. The property was absolutely stunning and well kept, as was the house. The surrounding area was quaint and peaceful. We cannot wait to return! Plus, Michael was very kind and attentive to any questions we had about the place. He even gave us some great ideas of what to do around the island during our stay. Overall, we totally loved the house and would highly recommend to friends and family.

Oct 2022This was our second visit to this wonderful place. We love the location on the island, off the beaten path, but not too far from hiking, the beach, and good food. The locals were all very friendly. Once again, the house was perfect…clean, quiet, comfortable. Easy to fix simple meals and relax. The hot pool was spectacular again. Such a perfect get away. We will definitely be back.

Most amazing sunrises. The salt water dipping pool was such a great way to take in the Big night sky!! Simply wow!!

Oct 2022This secluded rental was a private botanical garden stay that my husband and I did not want to leave. Manicured tropical gardens provided for a jungle getaway, with all of the features to make it your own private retreat. The caretaker Micheal was quick to communicate with my husband and I; we had an amazing five days at this stellar rental. One of the most beautiful stays we have ever experienced. Thank you for giving us a much needed break to tune into nature.

May 2022This PROPERTY is a sprawling piece of Paradise with unbelievable Sunrises right outside our Bedroom windows…and makes you think “I can’t believe we get to stay here!” It’s easy to find and once you drive thru the private security gate, you are taken by the lovely drive up to the House. Nice covered parking car port close to front entry door.The House is very warm & inviting with most all indoor lights with dimmer switches and nice outdoor patio lighting. I really appreciate that! Natural, Hawaiian native, organically decorated and materials. Well stocked kitchen with most all things you may need. Has comfortable accommodations and gorgeous fresh flowers thru out. We did not get a chance to use the Solar Hot Tub, unfortunately. Busy visit with our Sons Hawaii Wedding. The location was nice & close to the Wedding destination, near Kaimu Beach Park. We all enjoyed our stay and would love to return, sometime. Being Vegan, I loved this place and also eating at local “Tin Roof Cafe”. Fresh fruit stands along many of the roads. Hilo / Kona has so much to offer.

Mar 2019This property exceeded ALL expectation and was only surpassed by Mike’s hospitality. Despite a thorough depiction detailing the property, words and pictures don’t convey the true serenity and beauty of Hale Mahalu.
The book provided in the home was an ideal tour resource for daily planning and complemented Mike’s suggestions as well as insight into the sights and sounds of the big island.
We highly recommend staying here if you’re planning a trip to the Hilo area - you will NOT be disappointed in the accommodations OR the host.
Stella, the property cat (exclusively kept outside IF you’re allergic) is an added bonus - she provided us with companionship and entertainment.
Thank YOU Mike for making our Hawaii experience so richly memorable - we will never forget our stay at Hale Maholu and cannot wait to return!

Sep 2022This is one of the most amazing and special places we have stayed and the highlight of our trip to the big island. Not only for its stunning natural beauty and tranquility, but also because of the wonderful people who live and work on the property. Michael took us around the grounds and introduced us to the exotic tropical plants and flowers, fruit trees, as well as the vegetable garden. His extensive knowledge helped us gain a deeper understanding of the land. We really appreciate all the care and hard work Michael and his staff have put in to turn this place from a wasteland to a tropical paradise. We also really enjoyed meeting the animals living on the property (both domestic and wild). Stella is the sweetest kitten . Thank you Michael! We hope to return soon!

Dec 2019This is a wonderful, bucolic place to stay in the Puna area of the Big Island. The house is comfortable, the kitchen well equipped, the hot tub is a surprise delight, and the gardens are world class. Palm trees, orchids, views of the ocean in the distance - it’s truly a beautiful spot.

Nov 2021This is an absolutely stunning property! Essentially you are staying in a botanical garden. As long as you don't mind the intrinsically linked fauna that comes with it, you will love the place. Us adults loved seeing the geckos during the day and hearing the frogs at night. The teenagers freaked out if a bug ever got in the house but that's what comes with a rain forest- we just put them back outside. Nothing biting or stinging. There were spectacular sunrises visible either from inside your rooms if you left the blinds open or from the expansive deck if you preferred to sleep in a bit. Enjoying coffee on the loungers while watching the sky turn red, orange, and pink over the strip of visible ocean was amazing. You should see our pictures! Our stay was in late Oct/early Nov and without A/C it did get warm during the day, but usually the breezes were pleasant and I liked how chilly it got at night with the windows and doors open (there are screens on all). There was adequate electricity and hot water despite being off the grid. The trash/recycling method was easy and responsible and you can even compost if desired. The beds were comfortable, the furnishings a gorgeous mix of Hawaiian and Asian decorations, linens were abundant, laundry service was available, and the internet was adequate. All nice to have for a family of 5. Our only regret was that we didn't have time for a tour of the property by the owner/caretaker... and of course that we couldn't stay longer.

Jan 2020There is not enough space here to adequately describe the process - host and property. We have traveled the world - and this by far was the absolute best vacation home we have ever stayed in.
Michael was extremely thorough and efficient in his pre check in communications and met us by walking over the second we arrived. He lives on Property in a secondary home but provided us with 100 percent privacy. He was there if we needed anything. The pictures are REAL FROM LISTING. The natural sights and sounds were heaven on earth. Our family of 5 had a magical time and enjoyed the beauty of Hawaii from our porch. The 10 minute drive to Pahoa was nice - the 40 minute drive from Hilo was easy.
Don’t wait. If you’re in to a relaxing real Hawaiian experience with well appointed amenities in a real home - BOOK THIS.

The property manager, Michael, was so kind to give us an extensive tour and history of property's 21 acres, not to mention a botanical overview of flora and fauna cultivated there. An experience like no other I've had. A tranquil retreat I dream of returning to soon.

Feb 2022The pictures don't do it justice - - this property is absolutely AMAZING! It really was like staying in a botanical garden! The home was beautiful and had everything that we needed. Kitchen was well stocked with cooking basics (spices, olive oils, etc.). We LOVED soaking in the hot tub in the evenings while listening to the tree frogs. Can't say enough good about this property and the host! Thanks so much and we can't wait to come back!!
