Jul 2018We really enjoyed staying in the cottage. Perfect for one family. Very very clean and very convenient. You can find everything you might need. Nice modern kitchen. Spacious porch. Beautiful location. Waterfront - it takes a minute to get to the bay. A great place for swimming and kayaking. Just be careful as you go down to the water - it is not a stairscase, but just stones leading to the beach.Beautiful forest around the cottage. Lots of outdoor space for children to play. Peaceful. Private. Relaxing.Thank you very much!

Aug 2021We loved this rustic little cottage. It was in a quiet location with lots of beach front to explore! We loved watching the tide go in and out. We saw eagles, herons, porpoises, and seals right from the beach! The cottage itself was just as described and was equipped with everything we needed. We hope to return again!

Aug 2017We just left this perfect cottage and are so sad already! What a perfect spot to relax with our two year old and dog. We stayed on the beach for most of each day exploring the tide. We found the place rustic yet well appointed and immaculately clean. When can we go back?

Sep 2021We had a wonderful and amazing time staying at this quaint little cabin! It was a nice ride to Acadia national park and bar harbor, but also plenty to do at the cabin and or around the blue hill area. The weather was wonderful the whole week.

Jul 2016Very wonderful place on the Ocean . We kayaked and enjoyed the typical Maine
waterfront experience. The cottage had all that was needed for a great time.
We cooked fish on the grill and smelled the salt air. Your descriptor was accurate.
Thanks , we may try this place again!

Jul 2017This was a very cute little house very close to the water. It was very clean, and had a wonderful breeze in all rooms. The kitchen was modern and the bathroom was roomy. Bedrooms were very cute, quite small. Overall the house had a true cottage feel. There were neighbors through the trees that you could hear coming in and out sometimes, but they were not too close. Very pretty spot.

Aug 2017This is our 4th year renting this charming little cottage on Newberry Neck in Surry Maine. We love the quaint / charming cottage. We visited with 3 generations of our family (great grandmother, mother / mother-in-law; my brother and his spouse and their 8 year old grand daughter and me) this year. Mom is 80 and loves spending time on the porch and down at the swing by the water. She can't get down the bank but loves the sound of the water and watching us have fun.
We love walking on the beach looking for seashells and sea glass and playing in the water. My sister-in-law and I fight over who is going to do the dishes because we both love the view from the kitchen window while you're washing the dishes. No dishwasher, no worries for us! The cabin is situated on Newberry Neck which is very peaceful unlike some of the other seaside villages with the hustle / bustle of the area. This cottage is centrally located for trips to Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Schoodic Point and other coastal areas.
This year we discovered Pugnuts; a family-owned Ice Cream Shop which makes their own ice cream, gelato and cones and traveled to Cadillac Mountain for sunrise. You would think the TV was on most days with an 8 year old along...NOPE...she never asked us to turn it on! We love WKIT (100.3) radio station which we have playing at the cottage all week.
We plan to come back to the cottage next year, but maybe in the fall to see the foliage in Maine. If we can swing it...hopefully we'll be back for two weeks as we love the charm of this cottage. Perfect size for our relaxing family vacations. The cottage has most of the cooking supplies you might need...so we do most of our meals at the cottage instead of eating out. We've also utilized the grill for burgers and hot dogs.
I was able to read 5 books this year while I was visiting the cottage. Brought one with me from home and pulled the other 4 books off of the bookshelf at the cottage. I would highly recommend this cottage for groups up to 6/7 who want a truly relaxing vacation by the water!

Aug 2015The Almighty Struggle is a quaint, charming little cottage along the water. The view from the cabin is fabulous...even when you're doing dishes! The cottage is centrally located to many of the attractions in Acadia / Bar Harbor. We love going for walks on the beach every morning, looking for shells, sea glass, starfish, etc. Sunrise is just beautiful over the Union River looking toward Acadia. We find the cottage very relaxing, just what the doctor ordered!
This was our second visit to the Almighty Struggle. We would highly recommend this little cottage to small groups for want a very relaxing vacation. You can hang out at the cottage or take some day trips. We love our visit to Schoodic Point...packing a lunch and listening to the waves crash on the rocky shoreline. This year we did two visits to nearby Blue Hill, Deer Isle, Stonington, and Brooklin.
The cottage in tastefully decorated and very charming. We did not turn on the TV the entire week and we had a six-year old with us this year. She loved looking for starfish and sea glass on the beach with her grammy and poppy. My brothers wanted to know when we could reach out to Jan and Al and book our vacation for 2016. Relaxing...
Thanks to Jan and Al for opening up their vacation cottage on Newberry Neck to lucky vacationers! Much appreciated...

Sep 2018The Almighty Struggle is anything but that! This little house on the water is a slice of heaven. We had the most amazing week spent here really just enjoying our family and our surrounding. The home is clean and comfortable. The view from the house over the water is incredible. We drank our morning coffee on the tree swing that rests by the shore. We made three trips to Acadia National Park, which is approximately 45 minutes away. We cannot wait to come back!

Feb 2017Our visit to the Almighty Struggle last August was like a little piece of Heaven. The cottage has everything you need. Walking at low tide & looking out at the water while washing dishes, even made my son enjoy doing the dishes! And we were a short 6 minute drive from my brother's house. We are hoping to go back this year. Thank you to Jan & Al. Andrea Peters & family

Sep 2010Our visit to the Almighty Struggle in Surry was every thing we hoped for & more! It was very relaxing, private. We enjoyed all the comforts of home, but with New England charm. The serenity of the area around the cottage was wonderful: early morning walks down to the beach, coffee & oatmeal with Maine syrup & fresh blueberries on the deck, a fire on the beach at sunset. We had cozy beds with very nice linens and books to snuggle up with. There are many windows to catch the ocean breeze and take in the view. The children did not miss their video games one little bit! We went on several day trips to Acadia National Forest, the Oceanarium and Bar Harbor where we went whale watching and dined on the pier. Mostly every one we met in Maine was very hospitable. We would visit again if the opportunity came along.

Aug 2021Our little family spent a wonderful week at this quiet cottage. We had coffee on the shore every morning, saw a variety of wildlife in the yard including a porcupine, relaxed on the deck with cocktails in the evening, and watched a couple of movies. It is centrally located to the various activities we wanted to do in the area. Acadia and a puffin tour were highlights! You won’t need to bring anything but your clothes and a sense of adventure, as the cottage kitchen is very well appointed and the bath towels and bedding are very nice. Tom, the properties manager is a gem! The Almighty Struggle was a perfect spot for us spend quality family time having adventures.

Oct 2021Our family of 5 stayed here for the week of July 4th. We thought that we were coming to see Acadia National Park (which was beautiful, but busy); but the highlight of our trip was our sweet cottage. From the moment we drove up, we loved the quaint setting, overlooking the rocky coastline. We kayaked, hiked, loved watching the deer, and played board games when it rained. The caretakers, Capt. Tom & First Mate Andi, were by far the best property managers that we've ever worked with. We highly recommend that you book a Lobster trip ride on their boat. It was fantastic!

Sep 2017Lovely sunrise location on the beach however the house itself did not allow for privacy between rooms. The ceilings are unfinished which left a gap of several inches on the top of the walls not to mention the exposed electric wiring running in and out of rooms (!!). The TV and coffee maker did not work (however the DVD player did). We booked for a Sat-Sat rental (which the HomeAway website permitted and there was no visible indication that it was supposed to be Sun-Sun). Luckily we were able to arrive on the Sat. Again the quiet location down a gravel track was ideal with pretty views from the beach, however we expected a more "complete" house.

Sep 2019I stayed for two weeks and greatly enjoyed the cabin, the property and the larger neighborhood. Even after 2 weeks, I was still discovering thoughtful touches in the the cabin - walking stick, binoculars, a small but appreciated library etc. This is not a commercial space, but a private and personal one. I'll be back.

Aug 2021Great private location. Enjoyed access to the water providing swimming and kayaking. Also beautiful views. We also enjoyed the outside fire pit and grill. The kitchen had all the needed pans, dishes and utensils. We had six in our party and there were beds for everyone. Everyone also enjoyed the ambiance of the cottage. Will strongly consider returning at a future date.

Aug 2022Great place to stay if you want access to all the fun hikes and nature areas but also want peace and quiet. Cabin is cute and cozy, location is stunning. It was great having the bay right behind the cabin. We found several nature preserves within a couple miles of the cabin, too. Would stay again.

Aug 2017Cottage is even nicer than the postings make it out to be. Waterfront is about 25-50' from the cottage and has a neat glacial erratic perched on the ledge near the high tide mark. It's quite, clean, fairly private and well maintained. Will definitely seek to rent it again when visiting the in-laws if they have a full house!

Aug 2020A small, charming, well equipped, and clean cabin. Despite it's size it managed to fit our family of five plus our dog comfortably. The neighbors were a little closer than we anticipated (we could see both properties through the trees), but it was still quiet and felt private. The path down to the shore was a little dicey for our toddler to navigate but the rest of us managed just fine. Getting a kayak down to the shore is a bit of a challenge, you definitely need an extra set of hands to help out. Our kids loved skipping stones and digging around on the shore. High tide was great for swimming and kayaking. My wife and I loved stargazing at night. We're from the city, so a night sky as beautiful as that is pretty rare for us. We had an issue with the power after a windy night and the caretaker was quick to respond and very helpful. We had a great time a would stay again.

Aug 2020A nice little cottage on the water. The cottage is cozy, clean, and well appointed, and held our 6 person family perfectly. We loved the ability to sit by the water at the property or the ability to easily drive to Acadia or other beautiful Maine spots.
