Aug 2020What a quiet, lovely break from the city. Not too far from Wellington, I stayed here as a short respite for the weekend. Really close to the turn-off to Otaki Forks, so a nice stopover if you plan on any overnighters or day walks in the Tararuas. Milk, tea, salt/pepper, oil and cleaning products provided. Plenty of firewood to keep you nice and toasty! Overall, a lovely stay and would recommend to anyone.

Oct 2022We were delighted with our stay. Despite being so close to the sea, it was a delight to spend time in the arboretum surrounded by bluebells and native trees. It was a cold night but the log burner kept us cosy, and we we’re very comfortable. We’ll be back!

Nov 2022We spent a long restful weekend at the Stables, nestled in the trees of Talisman Nursery. Checking in and unpacking was perfect with the carpark outside the door. It was a little cold so we enjoyed the logburner heating the kitchen / dining and upstairs perfectly. Upstairs the lounge / main bedroom opened from a balcony looking down the drive. After meandering around the mature bush, we settled down to watch the historic World Cup final cheering on the Black Ferns. Beds were very comfortable, shower hot, bathroom comfortable, and the kitchen had everything we needed, including compost bin. The Stables is relaxedly furnished with well-chosen pictures and ornaments that are purposeful, comfortable and loved. We will definitely be back, and next time will seek some native plant advice from Karen and Stephen. Thank you!

Feb 2022We loved our quiet time away in the country. Even in the rain we were enchanted with the charming old stables conversion set amongst vibrant trees with table and chairs set out in the garden.
Our host was very communicative and helpful.

May 2022We loved Ōtaki & we adored staying in The Stables. We felt so relaxed & at home here we stayed another day. The fire was brilliant & so easily heated the whole place, the beds comfy, the spaces restful & so interesting. We loved the trees & the dawn chorus was just exquisite. We also loved hearing the story of the Raukawa & seeing Kohekohe growing in the arboretum. We heard bird song we'd never, ever heard before & Ruru in the night. The night sky was enchanting & vivid & the walk to Chrystalls Bend lagoon & the Ōtaki river were just great. Karen was such a friendly, lovely host & Max the dog was a darling. We really appreciated the chats & learning more about the history of The Stables. We even journeyed up the back of Shannon on our way home to visit the Mangahao power station- the reason The Stables were built in the first place. What a fascinating holiday! We are so grateful to have been able to stay here.

Aug 2022Was a perfect place to escape. Super quiet, lovely and clean. The Stables is an amazing building and has been beautifully converted like something of Grand Designs, lovely rural setting but still super close to town. Well equiped kitchen and lovely and warm. Highly recommended.

Mar 2022This place is so tranquil and relaxing. Feels like your in the middle of bush which you are but still so close to Otaki. The nurseries were linked in for a walk around with the bush paths created. The Stables were so well thought out with all amenities met. Thank you to owners .

Dec 2022This is the perfect little retreat cottage! The setting in amongst trees is just lovely, the area is very quiet. The house is simple but has real charm - all wood and brick and interesting geometry. I would definitely return here.

Aug 2020The venue itself was very cute as was the setting. Unfortunately we were woken at 7.30am by hammering of a fence and voices under our bedroom window. We advised the owner after we checked out. She was unapologetic and Had a zero care factor about our negative experience - she blamed her neighbours said that she was woken up too. She took no accountability for our experience- we had paid premium price for one night away to rest and destress. This was completely ruined as a result of the unacceptable early morning disturbance. Will not return due to The owners mismanagement of our complaint. Nor will we recommend it - Dissapointed

Nov 2020The surrounds - the Talisman Nursery - are lovely. Quiet, mature trees, lovely old building restored to perfection. The bed is comfortable and the woodburner is cheerful. 10 out of 10.

Jul 2020The stables were even better than expected from the photos. All the woodwork is finished to such a high quality. We sat outside in the morning and listened to and watched all the native birds. Such a delight!

Mar 2022The Stables is just what we wanted at this time, totally private in a lovely setting, very comfortable beds though my daughter would not let me sleep upstairs in the big bed because of going up and down stairs in the night, shame there is not a toilet and small washbasin upstairs. The bathroom being downstairs. Overall loved the stay and would go again.

Feb 2022The photos of "the Stables" say it all. In wonderful bush surroundings, this building has an interesting history and has had an amazing rebuild with sympathetic detail attention to everything about that history. We would love to be there in the winter when the logfire could be used - this place would be so cosy! Karen was a great hostess, and was prompt & accurate with all support information & transactions. This is the ultimate wind-down for a stressed-out couple looking for a step back into fabulous tranquility, but with all attractions & services still only a short distance away. We totally recommend "The Stables". Doug & Linda.
