Mar 2018We loved our stay in this cute, comfortable studio! The grounds were also lovely and our hosts, Elaine and Carter were happy to show us around and answer our questions about Hawai'i's plants and animals. We highly recommend this place, so close to the National Park and Volcano Village.

Apr 2017We loved our stay in Fern Studio. Carter and Elaine were wonderfully welcoming and the studio is charming as can be. The proximity to the volcano is great for hiking. We would definitely choose it again.

Jun 2021We loved our stay at the Volcano Studio! It was the perfect place to stay and experience the national park, and the studio was well designed and furnished. We definitely needed a car to explore the area, but Hilo was about a half hour drive away, and there were a number of fun, artsy cafes and shops close by. Elaine and Carter were wonderful hosts, and even left chocolate and fresh water in the fridge for us. The studio was close to the road but very few cars drove by at night and it was very peaceful. We would recommend it to anyone looking to stay near the park!

Feb 2018We absolutely loved our time at Elaine and Carter's studio. The location was perfect and allowed us to visit the national park multiple times a day. We loved the friendly rooster, the proximity to great food and beautiful scenery, and all of the amenities that the studio offered. Elaine and Carter were a wealth of information and incredibly friendly. Can't say enough!

Mar 2017This was the perfect place to stay for our vacation. You must know it is sleeping and showering only, no kitchen. There is a small frog, microwave and one cup-at-a-time coffee maker (please add half an half versus Coffee Mate). We had planned to visit the Volcano National Park, Pahoa, black sand beaches and Hilo on a very short timeline so this was the ideal place. You will need to drive to eat - there are a couple of good places in Volcano (five minute drive) and then your next choice is Hilo which is a 20 to 30 minute drive.
The owners are very helpful and you feel completely safe as the property is gated. The beautiful redwood you see in the photo is just incredible. The cabin is spotless, well constructed and tastefully designed.

Aug 2022This was our first time renting a property instead of booking a hotel, and they were the most pleasant people to rent with. Elaine saw that we bought wine, but didn’t have glasses and brought us some nice crystal for the trip. They were cordial in asking if we needed laundry done, and places to visit on the island. We loved it here and definitely would come back.

Feb 2017This place was wonderful. It is in the rainforest on a volcano; what else do you need. Fern Studio was a perfect place to relax and sleep before and after exploring the rainforest and volcano on The Big Island. Elaine and Carter have created a comfortable studio with detailed amenities that makes this place feel like a home away from home. We loved the local art displayed in the room, complimentary macadamia nuts, water, and use of flashlights. This is the perfect place to explore Hawaii Volcanoes NP and the surrounding area.

Jul 2017The sweetest little cabin for a perfect volcano getaway! Just a few minutes drive to the volcano NP entrance so very handy for getting up to see the sunrise at the crater. The hosts were very friendly and hospitable and the place very clean and comfortable. All amenities supplied.

Feb 2017The Fern Studio is very well shown in the photos online. What is not shown is its accessibility and proximity to the National Park. Elaine and Carter met us when we checked in and were available for tips and assistance. We took their recommendations and were more than satisfied in places to see and places to eat. This is the place to stay for visiting the park and Kapalana.

Nov 2016Our stay was so relaxing, such a change from the big city! The unit has everything you need and more. The bed was really comfortable, umbrellas came in good use, and having a microwave saved us one night. Everything in volcano village closes early so be sure to get there well before 8 or you will find everything closed. (We had 711 for dinner one night because of this).. This stay was the highlight of our trip. It is central to exploring the volcano park! It did not dissapoint, I highly recommend!

The studio was comfortable, quaint and surrounded by rainforest surroundings. The Reeds were great hosts and the studio was supplied with everything we needed. Very thankful and hope to come back soon!

Close to Volcano National Park. Can drive to park quickly. Makes it easy to see the park during day as well as to go back and take a look at the lava at night.
Also only 30 min drive to Hilo so planning time in town is easy too.

Jul 2017It was a perfect home away from home. Everything was clean and pristine. A well planned tiny house that met all of our needs. The owners provided unexpected items that we needed but had not planned for such as umbrellas and flashlights. The shower and bed were wonderful, as well as the lush yard nd whimsical yard art. Quality items such as the Kuerig and refrigerator added to our comfort. Proximity to Volcanos National Park, restaurants and other sites was great.

Oct 2022I can't say enough good about this rental. The studio itself is well thought out with everything that you need and something you didn't know you needed. The bed is comfy and you can tell that the owners take great pride in the experience. It was great to be able to meet with Carter and Elaine and they are incredibly nice and welcoming hosts. We enjoyed the sounds of the rainforest as well as Rolan Da Rooster, while using the fern studio as our base to explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The only downside we found is that we had to leave, but would absolutely stay again if/when we return to the big island. Thanks for providing one of our favorite places to stay in all of our travels!

Nov 2021Hi. I don't wish to take away from the graciousness of the Gentleman property manager who greeted us upon arrival. Additionally the place was lovely and clean, I really liked it. However car trouble occurred on the way and a friend came to my rescue. He had a small dog. We arrived very late, in the dark. We offered to park his car off the premise with dog in it (my car was going to have to be towed). The reason we offered to the Gentleman who greeted us to park the car with dog off premise is on account of the no dog rule. Gentleman said it was fine to have the dog in the car within the gate, or even standing next to the car as we might need to get him out to walk him to outside the gate to allow him to relieve himself. The next morning Mrs. was very upset. It gave the feeling that she had not communicated with the Gentleman over this detail before calling/reporting a violation on me in to VRBO whereupon a rep ran me down by phone calls/messages insisting the issue be resolved (by the time the phone calls began it had already been resolved). This definitely took away from the day of enjoyment (and finding a solution to our car issue). VRBO rep was difficult to reach while trying to return the call, never was able to speak directly with him and no one else at VRBO seemed able to take the message that the Gentleman and Mrs. had not communicated. Its okay, we didn't want a problem over it but left the dog in the car overnight off the premise on night two. This was my first ever experience with VRBO. I am a frequent traveler worldwide, always able to be friendly with host and not at all used to being treated this way by my host or agency. The Gentleman met me but the Mrs did not, she met only my friend. It would have been helpful for her to speak with me directly (I am the one who booked the reservation) or her husband for clarification before calling in a violation to the agency. In that way it could have been handled far better and not make me feel like my first review with VRBO has me appear criminal. You are welcome to respond to this VRBO. I did not save the messages but believe the representative's name was Eric.
