The staff was welcoming and dedicated to the inn. Time stood still when you entered the hotel, the views and grounds were lush and serene. My husband and I were truly able to relax in the peaceful onsens. Make sure you take advantage of the morning hike by the owner Hara-san. You will learn, see and feel the history and the passion of the locals who have been there for generations. Also, we opted to take a relaxing yoga class from one of the lovely staff that took place in a 400 year old structure. The dinner and breakfast were as pleasing to the eye as they were to the palate. I cannot wait to return. This was the highlight of our second 10 day trip to Japan. I’m back home in New York City and I often think of my time at Kijitei Hoeiso.
I can’t think of a single negative except.

This ryokan is just amazing, best vies, best food, best onsen (where you can also have your own solo time at night), best staff
They even managed to arrange both dinner and breakfast fully glute-free for my wife
I think overall there is a great care in the design + look and feel of the common spaces (spa, garden, tea room, restaurant) which to me doesn't fully match the room design, where some details could have been improved, given the price (e.g., windows w aluminum frame, no plants on the balcony, etc)

We had an amazing and unique experience staying at Hoeiso. The fabulous staff were exceptionally helpful and provided outstanding service. The meals were beautifully presented- each dish was a work of art. The location of the outdoor onsen was breathtakingly beautiful and so peaceful. What an experience!
There is no restaurant at the hotel and no nearby food outlets within walking distance. This is clearly stated on their website. We took the shuttle bus back to Hakone Yumato station to get some lunch after we checked in.

We had a lovely stay. The surroundings are beautiful and very much enjoyed the private onsen at night. We also had a fantastic 9 course dinner that is included. Do note that this is a traditional Japanese kaiseki dinner and breakfast so consider whether this is suitable for younger kids.
While we really liked our stay and highly recommend this place, the rooms are a bit outdated and in need of an upgrade.

We liked our stay at the ryokan, the service was very friendly and the lobby was beautiful. We love that the ryokan was situated next to the river and surrounded by many trees. The place was very quiet and peaceful. The service was friendly and we were greeted by Hitomi who answered all our questions. The hot spring bath was nice and we were able to choose between the indoor or outdoor onsen. It's a very nice place to experience a traditional ryokan in a more modern facilty.
For the price, I think the service and the facility could be improved. For example they missed 1 sandal when we checked in, which they quickly remedied. Also another aspect they could improve is the convenience. We had to bring our own towels from our room to the onsen which isn't convenient especially if our towels are still wet/dirty. Also some of the facility looks dated/damaged which could be improved. The coffee table in our room was visibly damaged. Also the food wasn't exceptionally good (for the price) but that is personal preference.

This ryokan was absolutely incredible! It is a very unique property, relaxing and quiet. The meals were incredible and the onsen, both indoor and open air were so relaxing and in such peaceful places. I enjoyed being by the river and in nature when at the open air onsen. I enjoyed wearing the yukata robe around. I felt at peace and relaxed here. The staff knew English and that helped a lot too. I could go on and on about this place, it was wonderful. I recommend anyone stay here who wants to experience a traditional ryokan and onsen.
I loved all of it!

Very typical Japanese stay, rooms were really nice. Staff was really professional and considerate. Amenities available. Community bath really inside and outside. We could reserve a private bath as well. We had typical clothes and shoes. Tea was very good. Bus stop in front of the hotel. 30 mins from lake Ashi.

the property is perfectly located, close enough to the station and to the sights. The outdoor onsen is magical in the evening with possibilities to book a private slot upon check in.
only thing that we were surprised about is the fact that the dinner and breakfast were served in the dining room.
the bathrooms were a little outdated in the rooms.

Great dinner. Onsen and location is fairly private. Nice selection of Sakes as well.

scenic garden, view from our room, polite staff
very outdated, dinner was very not diversified (pheasant in all dishes, including the dessert 😁), seriously over-prized

The outdoor onsen is absolutely stunning, it felt like being in a movie scene. I was able to enjoy it with a private reservation at night and when I went in the morning there was only 1 other person. The onsen itself made the price of the stay worth it. The dinners had a lot of food. The main meal for the first night was pheasant sashimi. The second night main dish was a simmer pot that was delicious. There was sake and other drinks available for additional purchase. I got the sake flight and that was good for a reasonable price. The futons are more comfortable than you would think, and I loved the bean pillow.

Our entire stay at Kijitei Hoeiso was outstanding. From the moment we entered, we felt at ease and relaxed and were thoroughly looked after. A beautiful welcome drink and snack, individual home tour, and all of the amenities you would need in the room. Dinner was exceptional - we dined in a private room with a beautiful view. The kaiseki meal was well thought through and beautifully presented. Our private onsen experience was unforgettable - an oasis of calm next to a flowing stream and starry night sky. They surprised us with a stunning anniversary dessert platter to celebrate our anniversary - a truly special stay.
This onsen is located slightly away from the main central areas of Hakone - however there is a bus stop right outside of this Onsen with a clear bus timetable. They also provide a shuttle service to Hakone station. This was not necessarily a negative, but meant that exploring Hakone needs more careful planning. It takes 30 minutes to Lake Ashi on the bus and 20 minutes to the station.

love the outdoor onsen and the private in room onsen. dinner was relatively so so, but we reckon you should still go for it as it’s the most convenient option.
staff was relatively rigid in terms of the outdoor onsen arrangement and doesn’t allow pre-booking

The onsen was really nice and quiet and in a beautiful area. The room was nice and spacious. The food was also very good and very traditional. The staff was very accommodating for non japanese speakers.
we found a giant bug in our room. Downside for being in a wooded area. I think it came in when we opened our balcony door. Otherwise, everything was great.

It was very friendly and comfortable. food was good. Great Onsen experience
we booked 2 ensuite rooms each could sleep 4. unfortunately there was a blocked drain in the bathrooms of both rooms which released a sickening smell. The hotel staff attended promptly but it should have been picked up before being allocated to guests for check in.
