The staff was very kind, as expected from a family owned ryokan.
The bath area is small, but you schedule your personal bath time.
Food is incredible, a must try when visiting Zao.
Location is near the main attractions, like the cable car is reachable by walking.
Lots of nearby onsens.
Nothing, everything was perfect

Delightful Ryokan in an excellent location. 2 minute walk to bus station and convenience store and 5 mins from the slopes. I felt very welcomed and well taken care of. My room was very spacious and quiet, with two big windows. Room was warm and cozy despite the cold temperatures outside. Dinner was outstanding, served in my room! I'm looking forward to coming back here next year!

Very friendly owners and the food was great. The three free town onsens are all close by.
Nothing I can think of

everything, their excellent hospitality, delicious food, affordable rate and the free onsen nearby is unbeatable. Definitely I’ll go back again

Family friendly (we were family of 6, 8 yo, 14 yo , 18 yo and 3 adults), the hosts/owner was very accommodating, kind and helpful.
Room was clean, traditional tatami room, also kept clean every morning.
The dinner and breakfast is a must have if you want to experience traditional, delicious, home cooked Japanese meal (locally sourced).
Few mins walk from all the 3 public onsens which is very convenient, you get to try them for free too (the ryokan provides the coupons for you). The inhouse public onsen is also a great option, a few steps from the rooms.
For those who ski/snowboard, it is also a few minute walk from the Ski resort (ski ticketing/renting area). You can buy lift tickets from the ryokan at a discounted rate as well
They also assisted is in shipping (Takuhaibin) our 5 luggage of ski gears to our next destination.
I wish we stayed longer :)

Takasagoya has a very cozy and homey atmosphere and is in a very good location. It’s very near the Zao bus station, and just a few feet from a public onsen. The onsen at the hotel was nice and hot - I happened to have it to myself in the evening.
The staff was very sweet and kind and I did have a nice view from my room.
I appreciated some quiet space to enjoy my coffee - I visited in January and my room was warm and cozy.
I had hoped to book meals, and thought I did, but I misunderstood.
However, I was able to walk further into town to a cafe for excellent soup curry and a relaxing atmosphere on a beautiful snowy evening.
Note: there are luggage coin lockers at the bus station, making an in the day trip up the gondola to see the Juyho convenient, before checking into one’s hotel.
I only speak a few words of Japanese, and each staff member I met was quite patient with me; each of them spoke English well but helped me with my Japanese, which I appreciated.
I was a bit disappointed about not having booked meals - perhaps the rooms could use a bit of updating? Though it did have a coziness, like staying with a family.

All staffs are very kind , great dinner and breakfast ,location is 3 mins away from zao bus terminal by walk
Room's wall quite thin I could here all conversation from next room , heater was shut down itself in the middle of night ,some bad smell from outside (I'm not sure if it was water smell from tiny canal or gas smell)
Overall it was great

Good location, just 5 mins walk from the Yamako Bus terminal. The ryokan's owner is very friendly to the guest. He can speak a little English too.
They also serve some tasty Japanese breakfast and dinner. They offer free tickets for entry to the 3 public hot springs nearby. I will be staying at Takasagoya again the next time I am here to see the snow monsters.

Excellent location near the bus station, public natural bath and convenience store. The Japanese style dinner in the hotel is outstanding. Staff is super friendly.
Would be even better if there is a private bathroom in the room, but not a problem for us and the shared bathroom is clean.

A great Ryoken run by a very nice and sincere family. We have stayed for 7 nights. The breakfast and dinner were very delicious. It's 5 mins walk to Lawson and ski lift. It will be great if washing machine is available for guests. Our stay was very comfortable and we slept well. Thank you for your hospitality and food.

The Ryokan is run by a wonderful family who are extremely accomodating and kind. If you are looking for an authentic Japanese experience then I highly recomend you stay here if visiting Zao to go on the ski hill.

As a first time staying in a Ryokan, I really enjoyed my time here! The family was lovely, the room was comfortable and humble, and the dinner was one of the best I've ever had. Thanks so much for having me!

Perfect hosts, they are so accommodating and kind. They made recommendations about everything I asked, made sure the stay was comfortable and even went above and beyond for me so I can better experience the area (like giving me towels even after I checked out)
I highly recommend this place if you’re in Zao Onsen! Will
definitely stay again when I’m back.

I chose this place based on the ratings and it did not disappoint. It was great for foreigners but it would help to have some Japanese or access to Google translate. Definitely do the hike to the outdoor Onsen on the mountain while you’re there and you can call a cab if you need to make an earlier train.
The room was incredibly clean and the tatami mats were among the most beautiful I have ever seen. The futon they use for your bed is thick and actually comfortable. You do not feel like you’re sleeping on the floor at all and the pillow was fabulous. Since the yen is so weak in November 2022, I considered buying a futon from their supplier - no lie.
The food portions are large so skip lunch if you need to or learn some phrases in Japanese to apologize if you cannot finish it. Please try every dish though even if you can’t eat all of it.
This is one of the best value ryokan in Japan with the meals included. You can’t beat this and Zao Onsen seems like it is underrated compared to Kusatsu. I would prefer Zao any day over Kusatsu and it isn’t so crowded.
I will absolutely be back. What a gem. I would not have found this if it weren’t for booking.com and the over 9.2 rating. Privilege to stay here.
I would be nitpicking at this point and I won’t do that to them.

The owners are warm and friendly, and even if there’s a bit of a language barrier, you can feel their warmth. The bath was great, and if you’re willing to pay a bit extra, the meals, especially the dinner, was great.
Perhaps a bit expensive, but worth it anyways, at least for me. Great ryokan experience. The heater can be a bit loud in the evenings as well.
