About this house rental

Set in the historic centre of Ceret, this light and airy house was once the Hotel Canigou, where Picasso, Braque and Deodat de Severac among others stayed. Our house and next door were originally joined together to form the hotel. We have tried to retain the original features where possible, for example the original wooden floorboards throughout. The accommodation is on the first and second floors, comprising a large kitchen/diner which opens out through two sets of French doors onto a 50 square metre terrace. There is a large electric sun shade for eating outside in summer. The kitchen is well equipped for six people and there’s a charcoal BBQ for use on the terrace. A washing machine is available. Also on the first floor is the large salon with two small balconies onto the street. Much of the furniture is Danish from the 1960s and 70s: two leather sofas, a recliner chair, coffee tables, desk, sideboard, hifi unit and wifi for the whole house. Between the salon and kitchen there is a WC. On the second floor, there are 2 double bedrooms, a bedroom with a double bed and a single bed, and a family bathroom. The house can sleep up to 6 people. The master bedroom has French doors onto a balcony, which has two chairs and a small table for morning coffee. It has a king size bed, wardrobe and chest of drawers. The second double bedroom has a shower and hand basin, king size bed and chest of drawers. The third bedroom has a double bed and one single bed and a small wardrobe. Bedrooms 2 and 3 also have small balconies. The large family bathroom, with large shower, twin sinks, toilet, heated towel rail and hair drier, also has French doors onto the balcony which overlooks the terrace and garden A cupboard on the balcony houses the iron, ironing board, vacuum cleaner and clothes airer. Ceret itself is known as the Mecca of Cubism and for anyone who loves modern art the town offers a very impressive Musee d'Art Moderne, several smaller galleries and many 'arty' shops. The Art Museum has undergone an impressive renovation and extension and reopened in 2022. The town is famous in the region for its bustling Saturday market; the range of stalls selling mouth-watering seasonal produce is truly impressive. There's a fantastic atmosphere on market day … or any other day; it's a place where people haven't lost the art of stopping to have a good chat. Wandering through the narrow cobbled streets, you'll find cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes. Within 30 minutes you can be swimming in the Mediterranean or walking in the foothills of the Pyrenees, and Spain is just on the doorstep.

The apartment in Ceret is lovely, decorated with style with all that is needed for your stay. If I am being honest, the double bed mattresses were a touch hard for my taste but the two single beds were okay. The atmosphere in the apartment is one of calm with the added knowledge that this was once the home of great artists such Picasso and Braque when it was the Hotel Canigou. There is a nice terrace where you can sit out and even in September the weather was lovely and warm. Thanks to Annie & John for the few days we had (we had to leave early).

The house is very well arranged, beautifully furnished, perfectly maintained, and very nice to live. It is airy and luminous. The terrace is a pleasant place to stay and the BBQ also makes it an ideal place for meals. Nothing's missing in the kitchen equipment. The house is also very well located, at a five minute walking distance from the village heart, charming and interesting (museum). Grocery shopping is easy. It is simple to park with a public parking less than two minutes away where we could always find available slots. It is the perfect basecamp to discover a great region, at an equal 30 or 40 minute distance (in opposite directions) from the sea and the nice beaches, from Perpignan (for the train station), the mountains, the historical sites, etc. Most of all, Annie and John are the nicest people on earth ! We spent a great week, five of us in our family. We hope we'll have some occasion to stay there again. We could not recommend this property highly enough.

The house is perfectly located near the centre of Ceret and is a very short walk to the shops, bars and restaurants in town. The house itself is so typically french with large rooms and a lovely terrace and garden to the rear. The property also benefits from a garage which removes the stress of finding a parking space during busy periods of the day. John and Annie were extremely helpful and gave excellent advice on events to attend during our stay. We could not recommend this property highly enough.

The house was welcoming and comfortable. It was cold for two nights but the heaters were efficient. The beds are comfortable and the kitchen very well equipped. We loved every minute we were in the house. We did as instructed and watered the plants and harvested the tomatoes. And the location is so perfect being close to the town centre but also quiet. Having the garden and terrace at the rear was lovely and we enjoyed breakfast outside with croissant from the bakery a few metres u the street. Taking was probably our only challenge! But a few street away we found a good road and just unloaded outside then parked. We are already working out when we can next visit!

Two of us stayed at the house for about two weeks in August-September, and we thought it was ideal. The house has a large dining room-kitchen, a large and comfortably furnished living room, a master bedroom with a very spacious, modern bathroom, plus a couple of other bedrooms. Best of all, there is a wonderful terrace leading out from the kitchen, where you can take your meals, relax, enjoy the scenery, etc. The front of the house is on a main street; the back of the house (master bedroom, kitchen, and terrace) looks out over greenery, with mountains in the distance, and is blissfully quiet. The house is very well-furnished: great linens and towels, ample high-quality cutlery and dishes, lots of books and tourist information, etc. Location is only two minutes on foot to the center of town (bakery, grocers, restaurants, etc.) and only six minutes on foot (!) to a Carrefour. Highest recommendation.
