About this cabin rental
Big Oak Retreat Our calendar is updated in real-time & our nightly rates are accurately displayed. Simply enter your desired dates and click 'Book Now!' Retreat to the woods with this dog-friendly Idyllwild vacation rental that's off the beaten path! Full of rustic charm, you'll feel rejuvenated in no time as you unplug and unwind amidst the mountain atmosphere in the private hot tub. Tucked away among lush ponderosa pines, this cabin is private but only a mile from town. Please be aware that in winter the access road is sometimes difficult to traverse; fortunately, both downtown and the Tahquitz Pines Conference Center are within easy walking distance. For fantastic hikes, climbing, and more, the Idyllwild Nature Center is only two miles away. The home has a welcoming charm, with wooden walls and wicker chairs. If you just want to chat with your friends after a long day, put some music on the stereo for ambiance. For those with a competitive nature, there are board games provided so that you can start a tournament, or books if you would rather have some quiet time. WiFi and a wall heater in the living room ensure your daily needs are attended to. The fully stocked kitchen is more than up to your cooking adventures. Brew some coffee to help with inspiration, then try a new recipe! When you're done, set everything out on the cheerful breakfast nook to eat. Two cheerful, well-appointed bedrooms have plush queen beds. A third bedroom, this one with a double bed, has an en suite bathroom with a standalone shower. With two full bathrooms, larger parties won't need to stress about long lines for the restroom. If you'd like to bring your canine companions along for a small fee, that's no problem! Perfect for a girls' getaway or some couples traveling together, there's plenty to do in the area. Catch a live show at one of several local venues, or if you're lucky enough to be around at the right time, make sure to attend the Jazz in the Pines festival with world-class jazz musicians. In addition to the wonderful music in town, there are dozens of art galleries featuring paintings, sculptures, and ceramics by local artists. Fisherfolk can spend hours at Lake Hemet, catching trout. (But make sure you have a valid fishing license!) For the hikers, try one of the many trails nearby, like the evocatively named Devils Slide Trail or Deer Springs Trail. Fans of mountain biking and climbing will also find plenty to catch their attention, with gear rentals available in town. We spent two nights here over Thanksgiving. We didn’t spend much time in the house because we were visiting family who lives locally. However, we liked the house very much, good layout with plenty of space for our group of 3 (one couple plus one adult). The extra bed off the kitchen is in a cool “nook” rather than a room, anyone taller than about 5 feet seven inches wouldn’t fit. But one or two kids who were okay with being away from the rest of the bedrooms would probably have fun sleeping in it. It’s not a long walk from the house to town, more than 1/2 mile but less than a mile. All in all, it’s a charming, cozy cabin and we would definitely stay there again!

It was in a quiet location not too far from town. A nice entrance with trees, and privacy around. It also has a closed in dog run which was great a deck that looked out onto the trees.

Loved that this location was close to town. The place is pet and family friendly. We had a pleasant stay. Used the hot tub on the nice deck. The kitchen had the works- utensils, pots and pans, stove and fridge, dishes. We saw a deer show up after coming back inside from town. Overall, very wonderful stay would recommend. No cable TV, but DVD player works.

Hard to find as dirt road with no markers or signs. Heaters & fireplace antiquated, main shower with obvious mold, no local TV, DVD player not Blu-ray & not noted. Carpeting spotted needs deep clean or replacement. Tiny microwave took twice as long to heat anything. Overall cabin chilly & primitive

We loved our weekend stay. We enjoyed the snow, played games and relaxed. Beautiful cabin we loved everything about it. A little getaway from the real world. We enjoyed the vhs movies and the fact that there was no wifi made it more relaxing to unwind.

Great location. Sheets and bathrooms were clean but not the kitchen appliances. Beautiful hottub. Can fit 6 people. Easy entrance. Tv doesn’t work. No light on the patio.

Hot tub doesn't heat, doesn't even get remotely warm. I contacted customer service to remedy the problem. First over the phone, then text, then email. The only thing they could tell me was that a technician might arrive by 10:00am the next day... which is funny because check-out was also 10:00am the next day... The technician never arrived, I didn't receive one update or help whatsoever. Not worth the money and customer service is horrendous.

Overall the property was ok. The hot tub wouldn’t reheat which affected my opinion. There wasn’t any communication on how to fix it. No Wifi was a surprise as well.

Housekeeping did a great job of cleaning but there was deep down grime that seems to be permanent. Great fireplace and comfortable bed though.

We found this to be a cute place in a great location. it was nicely secluded down a private drive, but had a great walkable location to trailheads and town. it has adequate amenities and it was generally clean. the living room heater was broken, so we needed to heat with the wood burning stove. (count on $30 of wood per day in winter) It also needs a new couch and armchairs in the living room and upholstery cleaner for the dining banquette / nook. The owner needs to spend a day providing weather stripping on the doors before renting this place in winter (especially with the living room heater broken). the kitchen sink has trouble getting and maintaining hot water in the winter. Mostly they need to get rid of the terrible online management company, Vacasa. they are too distant and too unavailable to manage a home like this in a snow area. there was now local contact provided, so when there were issues of access during the snowy days of our stay, there was no help or instructions on how to access or heat the cabin. We liked the charming house, but felt that the owner needs to find a better management that can help them with maintenance and provide adequate support for renters.

I wanted to love this cabin. But there were some things I couldn’t overlook to give it more stars. I never expect cabins to be luxurious, unless they’re advertised as such. BUT - I do expect beds that don’t sag in the middle, a couch that isn’t broken, and jets to work in the hot tub (otherwise it’s just a big bath with chlorine, right?) Three stars is generous - and is for the lovely fireplace, fenced yard, and for having Purple Rain on DVD. Please, for the love of god, get new beds and replace the couch.
If you don’t have 4WD or chains and it’s wet or snowy, you’ll have a tough time with Montgomery Rd. and the driveway. If dry, you’ll be fine without.

I enjoyed the cabin and property. It has a fenced yard and dog friendly. It has 3 beds and good sized. It has a jacuzzi on the deck and a wood burning fireplace. The only thing is with the fireplace, it smokes into the house and need to open the doors and turn on the fan to ventilate if you want to see the fire with its door open.

My family and I enjoyed this cabin for the two days we stayed. We have two boys and a dog and this was a perfect size for us and the fence was fabulous so our furry friend could join us on vacation. The hot tub was a big hit as well! I would say that the beds are a bit firm for my liking but overall comfortable for the most part. The TV and dvd player was great too except that the remote was missing but we figured it out. Overall we had a great time and would like to book the same cabin again in the future.

Would have liked WiFi, cable and a DVR remote control. Too many spider webs inside n out. Doors are not aligned n difficult to lock. Back patio very dirty.
Beautiful scenery n rustic cabin. Nice to enjoy. Overall good trip n would most likely be back later this summer.
Thank you.

We absolutely loved our experience. Very cute and quiet. I would recommend a small air conditioner it was over 90 this weekend. Spider webs in windows need cleaned. Aluminum foil in kitchen would be a plus...other then that well stocked and cleaned

This place was quiet and comfortable, with a lovely deck and hot tub. The kitchen and bathrooms had all of the amenities we needed. It's an easy walk to the center of Idyllwild and close to the many hiking trails and parks in the area. My dog loved the fenced-in yard, too!

There was a sock in the sink/ insinkerator/garbage disposal. It wasn't our sock.
There was also left over pasta in the pasta strainer. It wasn't our pasta.
The couch is broken. If you sit on the side of the couch that is closest to the door you'll sink halfway through it.
There are big splinters coming up out of the kitchen floor. Don't walk around barefoot or you'll regret it.
The cushioned benches around the kitchen table look dirty.
The mattress in the master bedroom is not comfortable enough to sleep on.
The hot tub was good the first night but then the water temp dropped. I tried turning it up to 104 and left it for an hour and it didn't heat up.
VRBO is not worth it and neither is this place. All the extra fees would be funny except I feel like I'm being squeezed for every single penny.

I wanted to give this property 3.5 stars. The location of the Big Oak Retreat--so named because there's a huge oak tree right next to the house--is perfect. It's an easy walk to town, and view from the spacious deck was fantastic. We had a couple of mechanical issues on checkin which were fixed right away. The management company and local handlers were very responsive. The house is well supplied. Parking is plentiful--we figured if you parked in tandem, you could get at least four--maybe up to six--cars in the parking area. Our dogs loved the fenced yard.
There were a few things we noticed that could take this property from average to awesome. First, wifi must be installed. I have no idea why the owners don't put that in. Second, pull up the awful carpet. Third, replace the mattresses in both bedrooms. They are like sleeping on boards. Fourth, someone grab a weed wacker and cut down the weeds in the fenced yard area.

Cute and cozy cabin. Hot Tub worked great. Plenty of towels, shampoo and soap. Plenty of clean linens and quilts. We saw deer and other wild life. Our dog loved the area. Walking distance to the town area. Friendly neighbors. Overall a great experience.

We had a nice stay. The one drawback was that there was no TV reception. The list of amenities was TV, books and puzzles. There was a TV but it was only connected to a dvd player, no antennae or cable box. There were maybe 8 dvd's. If I had known we could have brought some dvds. It should not be listed as having a TV as one assumes that means reception. Other than that the cabin was fine.
