About this house rental
Located in St. John, this lovely house for $323 per night is a great option for your next vacation. Stoney Bay Beach House is a one bedroom, one bath masonry house with a 60 foot long covered gallery, located in privateer bay estates nestled on it's own private beach. The house is close to the ocean and facing directly east taking advantage of the trade winds to keep the house nice and cool, and is one of the least" buggiest" locations on St John. The house is the only one in Stony Bay, part of Privateer Bay, so the only neighbors you will be able to see will be on the BVI,s! You will have no noise from cars, trucks, construction, dogs, roosters or people from this incredible location. The living room/dining room has beautiful soaring 18' cypress ceilings, with comfortable upscale furniture. You can enjoy watching the sunrise over Norman Island (aka Treasure Island) and the Caribbean sea from the comfort of your pillow top bed. The gallery is very close to the water and has a hammock , lounge chairs, Adirondack chairs and a table with 4 chairs for outdoor dining. The kitchen has all the amenities including a dishwasher and front loading washer and dryer. There is a coral reef right in front of the house to Privateer Bay for endless underwater exploring. If privacy, seclusion and nature are what your looking for this location is like no other. A 4wd is necessary for this house and many places on STJ. A 2dr 4wd jeep is best and renting on STJ is recommended because if there is a issue with a vehicle help will be nearby. ATT is the best cell service in most locations. Keywords: House

We booked this because we wanted to get away and relax. The Stony Bay House fit the bill. The view from the front deck and the nice breeze was perfect for lounging and relaxing. The bed was very comfortable and we enjoyed our stay. We would definitely come back again.

We returned to the East End to stay at Stony Bay and are so glad we did. This place is ideal for those who enjoy privacy, sea breezes, insanely gorgeous island/ocean views, shell collecting, spectacular sunrises, magnificent stargazing. We enjoyed watching the hermit crabs and goats travel back and forth each morning and evening. The home has everything needed for cooking, laundry, beach hopping (chairs, coolers, snorkel equipment) or just resting either on the deck or right on the beach. The bed, furniture, towels, and dishes are all high quality so you'll feel right at home. Thanks to the owner, Bob, and the property manager, Whitni, for their support. We had a great time!

Tropical paradise at the end of the world.
Completely private, we never saw another soul out there, only passing goats on the beach. The house is cozy and clean, with lovely dark wood furniture and nice linens. Very romantic for those who enjoy nature and solitude.
The beach is beautiful. Stones, seashells & coral line the beach.
What no other reviews mentioned is the world class fishing right in front of the house!
I rented a kayak from downtown for the week and explored the entire stoney bay area, catching yellowtail, hardnose, houndfish, cero mackerel, mahi-mahi (yes mahi-mahi in kayak range right in front of the house) barracuda & a huge cubera snapper.
The beach is challenging because the surf can be rough, and launching a kayak here requires advanced skills. But well worth the extra effort.
Watching the sunrise from the deck is something out of a dream.
A slice a heaven

We had a great stay at the house! Your housekeeper is fantastic! The entire house inside and out was spotless. The cleanest short term rental we have ever stayed in. It's on the windward side of the island so, yes it is windier but that keeps it cooler and with less bugs. Loved siting on the two resin chairs on the beach and listening to the waves for morning coffee and evening cocktails. Yes, some things do wash up on the rock beach but nothing excessive. We picked up a couple handful of items the entire 8 days we stayed.

This location is Magical, my Husband and I have stayed here multiple times and we just love it!!! The house has everything you will need, extra linens, beach towels, supplies, washer and dryer too.
Fans are needed in the kitchen, when cooking in there even just breakfast it gets extremely Hot.
All 4 beach chairs were broken and unusable. We contacted the property manager about this issue and were told it would be resolved but never was in our 2 week stay. Sadly not having chairs is a huge issue for us as we had to a beach daily.

I read all the reviews and felt I was aware of all the possibilities. If you choose to stay here, there are some additional things you will want to be aware of:
1. If you choose to go to St. John in June/July/ August there is a high likelihood the beach at this location will have Sargassum (red seaweed). We were there in August and there was 10 feet of dead Sargassum on shore and additional 10 feet floating. The dead on shore is alive with bugs and smells terrible.
2. This was the absolute dirtiest beach I have ever seen. In addition to the Sargassum there was garbage everywhere- shoes, socks, glass, a bean bag, part of a boat, beanie, and the list goes on.
3. The beach is rock- large ankle breaking rock that makes walking difficult, especially if you are older and a little less agile.
4. The location is remote (as advertised). What isn't said is that it is remote enough that there are rodents (large ones from the looks of the feces they leave and the holes in the screens). When you arrive you will be instructed to keep all food in the microwave and the fridge.
5. We experienced power outages while we were there. The power was out 12 of the first 36 hours we were there. The heat was unbearable. While I understand power outages cannot be controlled, when we asked the owner if he was willing to work with us with some kind of reimbursement so we could go somewhere else, he was very rude and told us we should just roll with it and adapt.
No smoke detectors-BEWARE

Love this property! It was exactly what we were looking for! Beautiful ocean views and very private!

Charming cottage, oceanfront, secluded and private with beautiful views and private beach. We loved our stay, had no issues at all. Everything you need is supplied. Contact with both Bob the owner and Whitni the manager were excellent. Will stay there again if ever go back to St. John. As mentioned, driveway is a challenge but doesn’t take long to get used to it and my husband liked driving it. If you like privacy and being away from the main busy areas, I recommend this house. ❤️

Great house and even better location. Views are fantastic… so peaceful and quiet! Best sunrises on the island.

Million dollar views and complete seclusion from neighbors. Recommend for those who want to get away from it all.
Be prepared for a tricky driveway to the house. 4 wheel drive a must.

Our family of four spent 14 days at Stoney Bay Beach house. The house and property far exceeded our expectations. Most of our time was spent outside on the wraparound porch.
There are many items available at the house to use at the beach including coolers, umbrellas, and beach chairs.
The views on the drive to the far East End of the island from Coral Bay are spectacular. The privacy and tranquility of the property are truly special. What an incredible place to vacation on St. John!

This beach house is perfect for a couple or small family looking to get away. It’s located on the east side of the island so it’s about a 30 minute drive to the popular beaches on the northern shore but there are some options on the east side relatively close to the house. The benefit to the house being on the east side is how remote the house is. You pretty much have an entire bay to yourself. It’s well worth the drive to the other beaches.
Since the water right outside the house was choppy throughout our stay, we ended up going to a different popular beach mid-morning until early afternoon and then coming back to the house for the evening.
Bob has a lot of beach supplies including chairs, an umbrella, coolers, and snorkeling equipment. The kitchen is also fully equipped with everything you need to cook. The oven is disconnected but between the stove cooktop, grill, toaster oven, and microwave, we were able to cook in for almost every meal.
There is only AC in the bedroom but steady eastern breeze, wrap around porch with great porch furniture and hammock make you not want to leave the porch.
Get to the house before the sun goes down so learn the route and navigate the driveway in the daylight. The driveway is a little squirrelly the first time but it’s not bad after you’ve navigated it a couple times.

Great secluded property. The driveway is a little bit of a challenge but very doable in a 2 door jeep.

This property was the getaway we needed. I do recommend trying your best to get there before the sun sets for your first time. The driveway is insanely steep, but nothing the 4WD jeep couldn’t handle. I suggest placing ALL food, coffee, etc. in the fridge/freezer. Previous guests left some coffee, spices, alcohol, etc. in the cabinet above the stove and the ants would come out each night. As long as you wipe down everything after eating/drinking then you’ll be fine. As Bob mentions, only the bedroom has AC (which cools fantastic). Opening the doors and windows in the living area was fine during the day. The internet at the home is pretty slow. We did have a flash drive that we downloaded movies and TV shows on for the trip so we were able to plug it into the DVD player and watch those. The beach is rocky, but we had fun walking the entire length of it and climbing the large rocks. Bring water shoes. The water at the property was too rough for us to snorkel during our stay, but we did snorkel at Haulover North and Trunk bay. I highly recommend you go to these two beaches. Haulover North is rocky, but the snorkeling was great and I found some seaglass. To find seaglass at Haulover North, climb the rocks to the left of the beach and follow until you can’t. I found all of my seaglass on this stretch. Trunk Bay is in the top 10 beaches in the world. It’s beautiful and the snorkeling is amazing. We hope Bob will have us as repeat guests!

It really was as beautiful, romantic and private as advertised. The driveway was a 4 wheel drive adventure. The house and view were amazing. Sitting at Neptune’s Throne was delightful. This vacation was the best one of our lives

This is our second stay at Stony Bay Beach cottage. We absolutely love the property! The stunning views and privacy provide a real chance to truly get away. It’s incredibly relaxing on the wraparound porch or on the coral beach in Adirondack chairs under the palm tree. The house has everything you need and the furniture is perfect to relax and enjoy each space. Steady breezes as well as fans and a/c in the bedroom keep the house very comfortable. We couldn’t ask for anything more!

This place is amazing!!! Best snorkeling on the entire island. If you get a chance to go to this magical place, then go.

If your looking for seclusion and privacy, this is your house! Well maintained home with everything we needed. Loved relaxing on the deck, listening to the waves hit the rocky beach and watching the boats cruise by. Beautiful sunrises every morning. After visiting all three US Virgin Islands, St John is our favorite.

The deck and view were off the charts beautiful! Some lovely goats would visit us now and then. The kids added on to the shell collection near the chairs on the beach so we could leave our "natural mark" like many guests before. Depending on the waves you can swim on the beach, otherwise take a 5min drive to Hansen Bay Beach which is one of the best snorkel spots on St John for turtles, rays and fish. Maho beach is also great for seeing all those sea creatures. There were some small friendly lizards on the deck but otherwise no bugs or critters that we saw. We couldn't imagine staying anywhere else on St John.
Bob - such a great find you have with this place and thanks for making it a great setup for a rental! Best wishes to you and yours

Unfamiliar with terrain driving of the island, we took a deep breath to drive to this beauty! 4wd is a must. If privacy is what you desire it’s just the place. The cottage with its small beach was just what was needed to unwind. Could use newer cookware as the nearby, diner options are limited and you need to hold your breath to leave & return.

A wonderful, private beach house in Privateer Bay. Clean, neat and has everything you need. Snorkeling is very good and the beach is also nice.

Enjoyed this beautifully built house on its own beach and cove. It is very remote and the driveway is quite steep but once at the house it is quiet except for the ocean waves and the goats. Plan to cook dinners in. Bob is a reliable host.

Terrific remote ocean front location. The house has a real beachy vibe. Very nice, has all that you need. Not big on frills. Perfect if you're looking for a real laid back disconnect. Management is very easy to deal with.

This place is great for those looking for a remote location away from most the island of St.John. Just what we were looking for and not more for this family of 3. Will be back again and would stay at Stony Beach House 😍

The house and location were perfect for us as we wanted a quiet getaway with privacy. The house is well appointed with everything you would expect. The beach is rocky but there is a sandy area to the left that allows for easy ocean access. The snorkeling is very good. If you're looking for easy and quick access to the many beaches then this probably isn't your place. If you value quiet privacy on the ocean then it doesn't get any better. We will be back!

My husband and I had a wonderful time at this house. Well equipped and the private beach was our favorite part with the "star gazing chairs". Great snorkeling right out front.
We loved the seclusion and privacy that this location offered us and would definitely consider renting again.

If you enjoy sun and tranquility, this is the place for you. I will say it is quite the ride, but worth it!

First let me say this was exactly what we were looking for for our 30th anniversary celebration - it was private and also remote… We enjoyed cooking in, snorkeling off the beach, relaxing on the beach near some rocks to the North. I had heard that the driveway was a challenge so I had some trepidation - once we drove it once though we were pros. 😀 I really can’t recommend this beach house enough. Whitni, the manager, was very responsive and was a pleasure to communicate with.
There are a few recommendations I would pass on to anyone considering staying here. 1. As mentioned the property is remote, so once your at home you just want to stay in and enjoy the trade winds, ocean views..we just didn’t want to leave. So on your way in the first time stop at the grocery store in Coral Bay (or Cruz Bay’s Starfish Market for a better selection) to purchase provisions. (they have purified drinking water at the kitchen sink so you don’t need to purchase drinking water - ice trays in the fridge mean you don’t have to purchase ice unless you use excessive amounts. 2. Don’t stress over the driveway - take your time - you’ll be fine. 3. We stayed in for most of our meals - utilizing the outdoor grill and stove top and eating outdoors on the table on the porch overlooking the ocean. It was truly magical. 4. if a baby goat gets trapped in the yard (that happened to us) just bay and coax it out - He was so dang cute and very glad to rejoin his mama and herd. 5. Most of the beach is rocky. St. John is also having issues with sea weed washing up to shore - If you walk out the beach gate and take a left, go about 50 yards and you’ll find a perfect sandy spot near the rocks to set out the chairs (provided) . We were even able to snorkel from this spot as the Sea weed was mostly to the South of it. All in all we had a wonderful time at Stony Bay Beach house - now, when we go back to St. John, I can’t imagine staying anywhere else; we’ve been to Pari’!

Pros: Beautiful location, house, own bay, wildlife, close to Hansen Bay Beach. Privacy, awesome view with sun coming up and moon rising. Owner and property manager quick to respond.
Cons: If super steep roads and driveways and drop offs bother you, not your place. My husband loved it!
Only bedroom is airconditioned. Rest of house gets very hot when it is in 90s and upper 80s. It would help a lot to have shades or blinds on windows and at least a window unit in living/dining room. Loved the rental but not the heat. Nice breeze on deck and winter might be ok without air.

Overall the experience was positive and good. The view was second to none, right on the ocean, unmatched privacy. Unfortunately the seas were rough and full of seaweed at the the time we were there, so we couldn’t swim or snorkel at the property but again the view was worth it. The price for such a view was very reasonable. However this location is not for everyone, you have to be willing to drive a good bit to get to the property from Cruz bay and the main beaches on the north shore, but there are a number of beaches that are relatively close, including a private beach you have access to within 10 minutes. But if you are looking for an easy drive to restaurants and shopping this may not be the place for you. It’s literally on the opposite end of the island. There are a couple of stores to buy groceries and supplies at Coral bay about 20 minutes away. But It takes about 40 minutes to get from Cruz bay to the property and a 4wd vehicle is necessary to from the road leading up to driveway which very steep and narrow with multiple switchbacks including a short stretch that is unpaved and quite rough. But I’m used to this as I have owned a Jeep and have done plenty of off-roading before. But if someone is not used to this, it may be intimidating. The home is well appointed and has everything necessary to be comfortable. The bedroom has an air conditioning and keeps you very cool at night. The rest of the house is not air conditioned but has a nice breeze keeping it cool enough. We spent most of our day at the beaches or exploring anyway. The kitchen has all the basics to cook meals and there is a gas grill to use as well. There are 2 beach chairs, towels and snorkeling gear that we used every day and also a large and a small cooler that we also used daily as well.
Any issues we had were handled promptly by Whitni, the property manager. Which were minor, the propane tank used for the stove was empty but was refilled in a couple of days. I used the grill, the microwave and air convection oven to prepare meals in the meantime.
I would definitely come back again and recommend it to anyone who wants privacy and to be oceanfront. If you can deal with the drive, and can manage the steep driveway then this is the place for you.
The positives greatly outweigh any negatives Still gets 5 stars from me.

The house and property are beautiful. Maybe some of the best views I have ever seen. The beach is very rocky. Not a good beach to paddle board on. This house is VERY remote. The internet access is spotty at best, non existent at worst. You will not be able to do any work from this property if you were planning to do zoom calls, or any online classes. Most people would not be affected by this ( you're on vacation) but my son was taking a college class over the summer and that was a problem. You will also not be able to stream from this property either. Again, that's fine for most people except that the home has a very tricky driveway and we felt like we needed to get back before dark. It gets dark at 7 and that's a lot of time for a teenager to get bored before bed. The property manager, Whitni, was very responsive to problems we had. Although, we had to get international roaming to make a call to her even with AT&T. I would highly recommend this property for a couple without kids. It was a little more remote than my teenager appreciated. It was nearly an hour to get to Cruz Bay from the house.

Love this place!!
This is the second time we’ve been here since we love it so much. We enjoy the privacy and scenery the most. Hanging out on the deck and watching birds, boats and ships go by was one of our favorite pastimes there. There are several nice areas outside to hang out and catch the breeze and watch the beautiful sunrise.

Great place to stay and 4 wheel drive is a must!
