Secluded 3 acre mountain retreat, 1.3 miles from town, Sleeps 6
About this house rental
Nestled in the picturesque Cuyamaca Mountains, just one hour east of downtown San Diego, Julian is a premier year-round getaway destination for those seeking an escape to the natural beauty of the countryside. Born during a one-year gold rush in 1869, Julian, California is a small town cradled in the mountains, surrounded by apple orchards and vineyards. Unlike other gold rush towns, Julian never became a ghost town. Maybe it's just too pretty to leave. Whatever the reason, today's Julian exudes small-town charm and country friendliness. Unlike San Diego’s coastal communities, with Julian’s 4,200 ft. elevation, it is unique due to its four distinct seasons, from the changing color of fall leaves and the fresh spring blooms of lilacs and daffodils, to a warm summer breeze and even a majestic snowfall. People enjoy visiting Julian for its laid-back charm and beautiful surroundings, but recommending the best time to visit is hard. This historic mountain hideaway offers a multitude of options in each season. Whether you are coming to sample its famous warm apple pie, visit some local wineries, spend time at the gold mine with the family, or escape for a romantic weekend in the tranquility of the great outdoors, Julian is a wonderful, close-to-home weekend getaway that leaves you feeling you have left the world behind for a few days. The Owl’s Nest is a very private, charming home on nearly 3 acres, located within the “Historic District” of Julian. Just 1.3 miles from town gives you the opportunity to be close to this quaint little town, yet lets you retreat to your mountain “nest” when you are ready for some relaxation. Our home was completely renovated in November 2014. The spacious 1200 sq ft 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom place will make you feel very at home with all of the creature comforts. The house is our family home that has been in the family for several generations. It is a very large 3-story house, and we rent out the entire first floor. We are not on the property when the house is rented, so as to give our guests the utmost privacy and feeling of tranquility. All of our guests have loved their stays at The Owl’s Nest, and many plan to return in the future. Why the name, “The Owl’s Nest”? It is a name given with faith…we just installed an Owl Box on the property in July 2018, and we very much hope to have a resident owl, or if we're lucky, an owl family living on the property soon!

Loved everything about the property and having a garage to park in was so nice! It’s in an area that you feel secluded but close enough to town. Missed not having a fireplace but totally understand the fire hazard.

Perfect weekend getaway. Just down the road from main drag of Julian. Comfy & cozy on a windy, cold & snowy weekend. Ideal amenities, clean & functional. Hooting owls along with the blustery winds was a cherry on top.

My partner and I had a wonderful stay! The property is close enough to town for easy acquisition of pie, yet out enough to feel like a getaway. The home had all of the basic amenities, was cozy and clean, and even sports a great view out back. We are looking forward to a return visit!

Loved the Owl's Nest
We went up to Julian for a wedding and stayed with another couple. The Owl's Nest was perfect for us because It had 2 king beds and 2 bathrooms. Plenty of space for the 4 of us to get ready. The property is amazing. It was so nice to have our morning coffee on the patio and to sit out there at night looking at all the stars. Very peaceful and quiet. We will be back!

Lovely Julian hideaway
Great place to stay when visiting the mountains. You get the best of both worlds - quiet, comfortable place in the country yet only 5 minutes drive to Julian. You do have some neighbors but it's still very private, never heard them just their rooster.
Rental is good size - 2 bedrooms with king beds plus 2 bathrooms, 1 ensuite, the other in the hallway. There is also a hide a bed in the living room. Well stocked with pretty much everything you could need - pots, dishes, coffee maker, microwave, etc. And a nice patio too off the kitchen area with a great view across the mountains.
Owner is great to deal with, email communications were answered promptly plus she gave us her cell number in case of any problems. I will definitely keep this place in mind when I go back up to Julian.

Great getaway, especially for families!
We were so pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the Owl's Nest. It was very spacious, clean, comfortable and there were so many little details that demonstrated the amount of time and consideration that went into making it a comfortable place to stay. From the night light in the bedrooms to the welcoming letter and bottle of wine, there were wonderful little surprises everywhere. It's also in a perfect spot, close to town but secluded enough that you feel like you are in a private mountain retreat. We really enjoyed having our morning coffee on the patio and watching the sunset in the evening while eating our Thanksgiving dinner. There was even an abundance of children's toys for the kids to play with! We will definitely be back and will also be recommending this spot to our friends who also love to visit Julian. Thank you!

Secluded, quiet retreat
We are very experienced in vacation rentals. Overall, we were "ok" with the stay. The place is in a quiet, remote area, yet close to Julian. It was pretty clean (kitchen had to be swept) and recently remodeled.
We did have a few glitches, though.
I did not remember that there was no air-conditioning. We arrived at about 1PM and the indoor temp was already 77degrees. It got up to 79 on a day that was 85 outside. We are used to 74 max indoor temperature. Cooled off at night though with the windows open and fans running full blast.
Second, the hot water heater went out. The owners took care of it by putting in a 20 gal heater (temporary). For 2 couples preparing for a wedding, we were short on hot water for sure. I did appreciate their trying to at least help us out.
Lots of spiders! I live on a lake so they don't bother me too much but the ladies were not happy.
The outlet in one of the bathrooms did not work, so hair drying had to be done elsewhere.
Lastly, the gate to the property was a nuisance to deal with especially when it was raining! Need to hook up the electric opener that was there!
I would make sure all the items above were addressed before you stay there. The owners were very responsive and apologetic. They respected our privacy and were not present on the property while we were there (except for when the plumber was there).
This sounds like a terrible review, but overall we were ok with the place. Just not what we expected for the total amount we paid, which was significantly over the advertised rate.

Nice retreat just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Julian
The property was clean and well maintained. We enjoyed the exclusive use of a large yard, with many cozy nooks for exploring with my granddaughter. Having two king-sized beds was a real treat - a rare one in VRBO world. The kitchen was well equipped, and we enjoyed having meals outdoors. Of course seeing the wildflowers in Anza Borrego was a big excitement, too! :-)

Beautiful mountain getaway
Stayed at the Owls Nest with our two kids, age 9 and 6, and my parents for a Christmas getaway. Perfect location with private property to enjoy. The house had plenty of room for 6 of us. Located close to town and all the great sites Julian has to offer. Spent the first day just enjoying the property and all the little details. Woke up to snow on Christmas Eve and enjoyed two full days of our own personal winter wonderland where the kids could sled on the property and play in the snow with absolutely no crowd and your own play space. Beautiful place and we are already planning on returning to Owls Nest. Stacey was friendly, professional and quick to respond, thank you for such a great experience in such an important family holiday trip.

Absolutely wonderful stay
We stayed the Owlsnest for an extended stay which we had to extend even further. The property was in excellent condition close to Julian but in the countryside. The house was well stocked with utensils and everything one could need for an enjoyable stay. The best was however dealing with Stacey, friendly, warm, understanding and willing to help. I highly recommend a stay at the Owlsnest

Private Mountain Retreat - Perfect for Kids or up to Two Couples
We spent the weekend at Owl's Nest with our twin four year old boys and seven month only baby. The house was as described plus so much more. The bedrooms were huge and everything was fresh and new. There is a one car garage available for your use. We were pleasantly surprised to find a port-a-cot, high chair and plenty of toys available for our baby. The house is simply furnished with not too many 'things' making it well and truly kid proof. The four year olds spent hours outside exploring the fenced in property (peace of mind for Mom and Dad), building cubby houses, riding their bikes and generally enjoying the outdoors. The house is in a quite area with great views yet only a 3 min drive into the heart of Julian. We can highly recommend the Gold Mine Tour in the hill behind the main town. A perfect weekend away and we will be back!

Peaceful and cozy getaway
The Owl's Nest is exactly what we were looking for. My husband and I wanted to get out of the city for a weekend, and allow our 3-year-old daughter a chance to run around in nature a bit. Owl's Nest is a little over an hour from San Diego, and about a mile from the downtown Julian area. The house is clean, fully modern, very comfortable, and kid friendly (lots of space for burning off energy!). We hope to stay here again soon!

Cozy & comfortable
It's is a very nice little place, my children ages 2,5& 8 enjoyed the place. We were there for 4 days arrived Wednesday & departed Saturday. We got a bit of snow on one of the mornings. My only recommendations would be that they had cleaning supplies such as a broom & vacuum for those who stay a couple days . My 2 year old dropped chips in the kitchen floor & it was hard picking them up. We also had no electricity for 3 hours all internet service was down on our phones too . My kids enjoyed the toys in the closet . And the kitchen was equipped with everything you could possibly need . We ate at the Miners Diner and the food lacked flavor a lot. It was over cooked & dry. They also forgot to bring some of our items so the girl had to take them off our bill. We did enjoy very yummy pies and lattes at Mom's Pie House everything was delicious we tried a slice of every pie they sold . And their cinnamon vanilla ice cream was amazing too!

We loved this peaceful private getaway
I was really hesitant to book this property because I saw that it was attached to a "main" home and had a bad experience with that this year at a VRBO cabin in Idylwild. The owner of the Owl's Nest assured me that the main home is never used when the lower unit is rented. We arrived at the property and found that it was both close to town and also felt very private and removed. The space was nicely renovated, clean and well stocked. It was a wonderful getaway. I have two young girls, and they were thrilled to see some cute toddler toys in the closet and my husband and I were so grateful that there was a highchair too. My older daughter loved running around the property, picking apples from the trees, and jumping in leaf piles. My younger one just learned to walk and she had so much fun on the soft carpet. I would absolutely go back to the Owl's Nest whenever my family needs a little time to unwind and be a little closer to nature.
