Quaint Fishing Cottage
About this cottage rental
Secluded from other vacationers the cottage is located on a 1/3 acre peninsula immediately off Route 15. Conveniently eight miles south of Smiths Falls and 45 minutes from 1000 island bridge. The cottage has a private dock and a gated lockable entry. There is a second dock and parking space used by patrons of the island cottage. Currently priced in American Currency. Please add 20% to listed price to estimate actual cost in Canadian currency. Sorry for the inconvenience. Gorgeous Canadian sunsets, and lots of room for the kids to play! This cottage is a very good value. Its a nice property and quaint cottage located on the west side of highway 15 there is a nature trail on the opposite side of the highway. You can kayak under the highway on Otter Creek to take an adventure into an everglade like winding waterway that goes on for about 1 kilometer with birds, beavers, turtles, large frogs, and many other creatures to observe. Being next to highway 15 can cause road noise which many people get used to but some may find it undesirable. Since there is not a beach and the water depth does not get past 3 meters deep for about 100 meters from shore better swimming locations may be found using the kayaks or by renting a boat at lens cove in Portland. This is primarily a fishing cottage with no neighbors where you can be as loud as you wish. Keywords: Cottage, Lake Front, Secluded

This is a good spot to stay. It is a cozy little cabin. Great room for your dogs to play around outside. Although you can't swim in the lake by the cabin it is still has a great view.

Wonderful week!
Stayed here in July 2022. Our first official vacation in years. Wasn't really sure what to expect. The description online was pretty accurate. The water level was quite low while we were there which made fishing from the dock/bank almost impossible due to the thick weeds. But we still managed to catch a nice couple bass without leaving the property. Thank goodness we didn't bring a fishing boat as there was no way it would have made it in to the dock. We were unable to kayak under the bridge as the water was so low it was completely blocked by rocks. But we still had the lake. We were unable to find the hiking trails they don't seem to be anywhere close by. It is literally located on the highway so a lot of traffic at all times of day but completely private being gated and surrounded by trees. If you can block out the sound it's a complete oasis. Also the email with check in instructions was not the greatest info, but once we showed up to Twin Pines Campground we connected with the correct person and all went smoothly.
The cabin was incredibly stocked and we needed for nothing all week. We were very fortunate to have super weather the whole time and throughout the week it was like we had the lake all to ourselves. We caught so many fish and we got our first "the one that got away story" I won't repeat as it's too depressing! Overall it was exactly what we needed, we were completely relaxed by the end of the week and not wanting to go home. I have no complaints about our stay and would go again. The locals were lovely and made you feel really welcome. Don't forget to bring lots of water with you as you can't drink the tap water which is normal for a lakeside cottage like this also bring firewood, there were some large logs but nothing to get it started. Ideal for pets being completely fenced in cut likely kids would be disappointed not being able to jump in off the dock it was just too thick with weeds. Rest of the lake was amazing as soon as you left the inlet and we spent most of our time on the lake fishing.

We enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It located right beside highway 15, but the noise did not bother us. It provided everything listed in the website. The downside is the dock needed some maintenance, and the TV channel doesn't work. And too much weeds in the lake.

We had an immediate setback, as the cottage tv and internet were not functioning. The owner got in touch with the provider and to cut a long story short, was unable to secure those advertised features. He has promised compensation. The cottage was extremely clean and well stocked with necessities. We were very happy with the fenced aspect, so our dog was protected from any urge to wander. Smiths Falls was a short drive away and had all that one would need for supplies.

We stayed in the cabin for one week. The cabin was quite close to the water which unfortunately was quite shallow close to shore and somewhat weedy. Since we stayed at the end of August, it didn't matter because it wasn't really hot enough to want to swim. We spent an enjoyable week canoeing (our own canoe), walking the trail, kayaking, exploring the creek and lake, and taking pictures. While the cabin was relatively close to the road around 100 ft, we were able to block out the sounds of the highway and focus on the beautiful scenery before us. We were able to capture photos of herons, a beaver dam, geese, loons and a nest of Mergansers. The cabin was well equipped with all amenities including air conditioning. We did have a couple of questions and one issue while there; however, it was easy to contact the owner Brett who responded immediately to any concerns. All in all we had a very enjoyable and peaceful week

My husband and I stayed at the cottage for one week with our two French bulldog girls. We loved the property and the sunsets were beautiful! Our girls loved the freedom they had on the fenced in property. The noise on the road didn't bother us. We felt very secluded with tons of privacy. Would recommend and love to go back.

We booked this four night stay as an escape from Toronto and it was exactly what we needed. Bret was great to communicate with and even went the extra step to call and chat with me briefly before our stay to make sure I knew where to pick up the keys, inform me to bring lots of drinking water, etc. The cottage was clean and well stocked with everything we needed, except for firewood which wasn't a problem as the MacEwen gas station up the road sells everything you need. Would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a nice retreat.

The cabin is delightful and is better in person than you can tell from the photos. The bedrooms are small, but comfortable. The cottage has a working toilet, and hot water, but none of the water is potable - so bring your own. It should be said that the road noise is there, but didn't bother us. The area is fenced in but still open to the water, so depending on your animals, you may still need a leash. More detail about the check-in process and lack of potable water is needed, but we were able to manage without difficulty. We are looking forward to booking here again.

We had a great time. All that was listed of the property was true. It was wonderful having the fence
Definitely recommend this place. The customer service from the owner Bret was above and beyond. We had issues with the wifi which he helped through phone conversation in guiding us. We could not find the air mattress but after discussing with him he had one delivered within an hour. Amazing service !

Good stay, room for improvement
Check in seems a little glitchy as you have to get the keys at a nearby campsite. Even though we advised what time we’d be there, no one was around and no one picked up the phone when we called upon arrival. It all worked out, but a few “now what?!” moments.
This is definitely a cute little cottage. They’ve done a good job with a small building. Space wise, two couples on vacation would be pushing it. Air conditioning was awesome. Bell Internet was great. New appliances (stove & fridge) - also great. The bathroom seemed newly done and the shower stall was spacious and gets two thumbs up.
Just FYI, there is no room to put groceries. Every cupboard and drawer is packed. So many pots and pans that they even filled the oven. Huge aluminum foil roasters, an old George Foreman grill, on and on. So that’s great, if you need to pour 20 cups of coffee (I counted the mugs) or if you need 7 mostly melted spatulas all at once. ;o) One wine glass, but lots of plastic cups from the 70s. We had to leave all of our dry goods (snacks, crackers, potatoes, onions, sugar, peanut butter, breads, etc. in Rubbermaid bins in the second bedroom). One good go through by someone with some common sense would eliminate the unnecessary kitchen stuff and create some storage space for renters!
The bedrooms are far too narrow for night tables but a corner shelf on each side of the bed would help with somewhere to put eyeglasses or a water glass, or a book when nodding off.
Be aware that although not stated in the VRBO listing, you have to bring drinking water (which, once we saw the hose out in the shallow, murky, weed filled pond, we also used for coffee, washing vegetables and brushing our teeth) It’s mentioned in the info sheet you get once you book. But once you get there, there’s no water cooler to dispense the water if you buy a 5 gallon jug. So buy a pump, too.
The BBQ worked, but was a shambles. Hopefully that’s next on the list for replacement.
No swimming here. Although shallow (~2’ at the end of the dock), there’s a good foot of mud in the lakebed and the water is completely weedy. Weeds growing and weeds floating. Messy for the boat motor. The dock is narrow (not suitable for sitting) and FYI has no cleats for your boat ropes. The public boat launch is just up the shoreline, so it’s quite convenient.
Otter Lake is great, we enjoyed our days out on the water. We enjoyed our stay & had a good week overall. Thanks Brett!

AMAZING
To put it simply, it was amazing.
Bring lots and lots and lots of water.
Internet was not available on our stay, but being given partial compensation for it.
Kitchen utensils and cutlery stocked.
It was peaceful and serene. Enjoyed thoroughly 😊
Sincerely,
Diana

Nice cottage and location
The cottage was in a good location and very private. The cottage and property were very nice and the road noise was not an issue. The beds were comfortable but the bedrooms themselves were narrow making it tricky if you had to get up during the night and try not to wake up the person beside you. Fishing from the dock would be great for little kids as the were lots of sunfish. You pretty much catch one with each cast. Apparently the bass fishing this summer was excellent but only if you had a boat. Overall, I would have given it a 5 star rating except for two things. The fishing kayaks and lifejackets were nowhere to be found. It is possible they were in the shed but none of the keys we were given would open the lock. One key fit the lock but would not turn the lock cylinder. The other issue was the wifi would not work. Our computers and phones said connected but no wifi. Tried turning the modem off and leaving it for 5 minutes and putting it back on every day but never were able to connect. Had to use our cell phones as hotspots to connect laptops. Luckily we only went on the internet while having breakfast in the morning to catch up on the news and again for a while in the evening.

John and Diane's august vacation
thank you for the fenced in area. This made all the difference in having my pet enjoy total freedom. We enjoyed the use of the kayaks and also really appreciated having lumber for fire. We love fishing and for us, this was an ideal getaway,
thank you

Paradise for our dogs
We chose this cottage because of the fence and water around the perimeter to keep our dogs contained and safe from the highway. The cottage itself was clean, tidy and well appointed but quite small and suited 4, comfortably, 6 would be a squeeze. The air conditioning and appliances were new and worked very well. The view of the lake superb and the kayaks made it all accessible. The loons, heron, mergansers and other wildlife were intriguing. However, we really found the constant noise from the highway, because it is so close and so busy, very distracting. Our home is in a quieter neighbourhood than this cottage. We were also disappointed that we couldn’t swim from the dock because of the weeds, although this didn’t bother our lab.
We met the owners and found them to be considerate and conscientious.

A little piece of paradise!
On arrival, I was dismayed to discover the proximity to Hwy 15. Within a short time, the cozy cottage, proximity to the lake in a secluded private bay won me over! What traffic?
Goose families parading by the shore! Otters cavorting next to the dock...truly idyllic! The sunsets were worth the price of admission. The cottage is beautifully renovated (the workmanship is superb)!
Enjoy your stay!

Very nice place
We had a wonderful week, fishing was great and weather was good. It's very well located only 8 miles to Smith Falls which has Walmart, gas, beer and alcohol and a hospital which we had to visit. One thing Americans should know is hospital there doesn't take American insurance you must pay cash up front and since ours wasn't an emergency we drove back to Alexandria Bay, NY for treatment.

Beautiful private cozy cottage on lovely Otter Lake, with gorgeous views and magnificent sunsets.
I had a wonderful stay at Cozy Cottage on Otter Lake. The cottage is indeed cozy, and it was very clean. It had all the basic things you need in the way of dishes, cutlery, towels and linens, etc. Wifi worked great--not that was essential on holiday. My two Labrador Retrievers, Molly and Marin, and I settled in comfortably, and enjoyed the sounds of loons on the lake in the mornings, and the fabulous sunsets on the dock (with a glass of wine) each evening.
Molly and Marin thoroughly enjoyed retrieving sticks from the water--Labs are great swimmers, and I didn't have to worry about their safety, as there is a fence along the back edge of the property, which borders Hwy 15. After a day or two, I got used to the sound of Hwy 15, so it really wasn't a problem, and the sunsets more than made up for it. I would have liked to swim, as the lake was warm, and very clean and clear (it flows into the Big Rideau waterway; apparently the Rideau does not flow into it), however, there are quite a few weeds along the dock. Perhaps that could be remedied by a longer dock in future? All in all, it was a beautiful stay!

Quiet secluded cottage on a lovely little bay
Really enjoyed our stay at your cottage - we were delighted in watching the various wildlife entertain us; the loon family called out to us every morning & night; the little water snakes came out every morning to sun themselves on the rocks by the water; two large blue herons flew over every day but then remained in the reeds so we couldn't see them; the Canada geese were plentiful but messy in their own way.
We sat in front of the old firepit pretty well every night & watched the stars come out.
Everything was adequate with the exception of bath towels in the bathroom. The shower was great !

Amazing view of the sunsets over the water.
The cozy cottage was a great place to stay with kids or pets. The place is all fenced in and large area to play lots of games. The only down side was it was right on highway 15, its loud at times. We would rent it again for sure!!

Excellent place for kids and dogs
We spent a wonderful week here with a 5 year old, a 1 year old, and two dogs. Everyone had a great time. The cabin itself was even nicer than we expected for a rustic fishing cottage (clean, fully stocked kitchen, wireless internet). The property has a grassy lawn that the kids and dogs enjoyed, and is very private with no neighbors close enough to worry about. At the same time, there is plenty of shade and wildlife with beautiful views from the cabin. We especially enjoyed kayaking and exploring Perth. The only downside is the road noise, but highway 15 is a two-lane country road, and makes the cottage about an hour from our home in west Ottawa; the road is also not really visible from the property, and vice versa, with the trees. We definitely hope to visit again.
