Long Story:
About a week before New Years Eve, the biggest holiday in Costa Rica, we found ourselves needing to find a hotel near the airport the day before our flight home. We had several options at that time, but after seeing the pictures of Castilla “Resort” as it is named, and seeing that all the surrounding hotels are really expensive, we really thought we got lucky. We made the terrible mistake of not thoroughly reading previous reviews. We won’t soon be making this mistake again.
Upon arriving, we were a little disappointed to be led to a dark corner of the property. It was a bit of a jumble and nothing like we expected, but we’re not picky and we just needed a place to sleep.
After the taxi left as well as the person who gave us our room key, we started to realize that we really should have gone into the room and checked it out before letting everyone leave. The room was dark and smelled overwhelmingly of mildew and bleach. I think there’s something in the tropics that makes you think you can always just open up a space and let it air out As I looked further, I realized that this more resembled a prison cell than a room to stay in. The ceiling was covered in black mold spores, while the corners and edges of the ceiling where dark stained with water penetration. It had obviously been painted over to hide the issue, but now was covered in mold in mold spores once again. Also, it wasn’t possible to stay in the room for too long due to the overwhelming smell of bleach and or chemicals. I looked at the one window in the room, thinking I could open it, but again, it was more like a small cell window covered in jungle on the other side.
After just a few minutes, my wife and I both realized that we would not be able to spend a night here. It was only at this point that we realized we had been cut off from leaving in addition to everything else.
There was a large family renting the main building for the holiday. It was very awkward to stand in the middle of a vacationing, holiday family event by the pool trying to connect to the Internet and somehow hail a taxi to who knows where.
After an hour or so, we did eventually manage to connect back with Sonia and she did send a

The property is very pretty and the set up around the pool is great for family gatherings.
Check in needs some improvement, no English speaking manager is on site after the maid shows you your room. Even a board providing restaurant details, wifi passwords, and perhaps a phone to contact the owner with any questions, would help improve the initial 1st impression and reduce stress and frustration of the client.
Location is far from any restaurants, stores, etc, so not recommended for anyone without a car
Beach is not easily accessible on foot, but the pool was lovely
You must make reservations early in the day if you want to eat at the restaurant as it is run by a lovely couple that are there on most evenings other than Tuesdays...no food options on that day. The owner had a wonderful dinner catered by her staff for us on Tuesday evening at our request.
The bar is only open if the couple renting the restaurant are on site in the evenings...otherwise you are on your own for drinks or lunch
Wifi was sporatic and sometimes turned off, making it even more isolated for the guests trying to set up any tours or outings.
Overall as the planner for a group of 10, I found this part of our tour through Beautiful Costa Rica extremely stressful as I was continuously problem solving and self managing...not what I expected to do on our vacation.
I truly hope the owner finds a manager that can stay onsite, answer the guests questions and ensure that their needs are met, allowing her to manage her other workload.
This place could be a treasure with a little better communication and visable management.
Thank you to Frank and Anna for the amazing food and to Sonia's staff for the delicious fish dinner.
Wishing Sonia the best of luck in future!

Castle to myself
The only reason I give my stay a 4 of 5 is because I had the entire place to myself. The staff was outstanding and the food and service was perfect. I felt like family rather than a guest.

Overall I would give it 3 stars. Accommodations were adequate but could be improved. It is a prior home with conversion to B&B. I personal like the rustic appeal and privacy. The Home is situated in a quiet and safe area that is within 30 mins drive of town and local beaches and tour activities. Despite the few needed upgrades it was an economical and adequate location to rest after exploring costal beaches and towns close by. A rental car is recommended if you are wanting to see other areas. If you are wanting to be within walking distance to swim and sun beaches explore other options. Overall it was adequate for our first time in Costa Rica.

This was a very unique experience...especially if you get to stay in the top bedroom, like we did. 360 degree views. Awesome! The breakfasts were wonderful and the pool refreshing. A very relaxing place to be.

Beautiful and relaxing with lots of space.
Sonia, Javier and the staff were warm and accommodating. The Castillo is in transition from a villa rental to more of a boutique hotel. Sonia was great at handling requests for adjustments to dining and rooming options. It’s important to be patient and understanding of this dynamic as guests too in order to have a delightful and stress-free stay!

Excelente!
