Pt Reyes 2 Cottage Retreat Over Tomales Bay from $375\/nt (for Chalet only)
About this chalet rental
NEW VACATION RENTAL! Private 5 acre forested, hillside retreat overlooking Tomales Bay and the hills of West Marin, just a few minute walk to historic Inverness town through a private trail. Great for larger family event or very special stay for a couple or group of friends. The “Oaktopia Refuge” is nestled amidst the oaks of the Inverness Ridge and is surrounded by parkland of the Pt Reyes National Seashore. A chalet and 2nd cottage have an Old Inverness Charm and a warmth that will either compel you to spend your time relaxing on site, or serve as a welcome refuge after a day of hiking; swimming; boating; biking; bird-, seal-, whale-, and elk-watching; oystering; or simply sightseeing. Oaktopia Refuge is located 5 minutes from historic Pt Reyes Station, with its bookstores, local artisans, and restaurants; is just minutes to the hidden and not-so-hidden beaches of Tomales Bay; and is perfectly located for easy access to all the jaw-dropping hiking trails and Pacific Ocean beaches of Pt Reyes National Seashore. The 2 story chalet has a front entrance that overlooks a deck, a lily pond, and the Inverness Ridge. The backside of the chalet has sliding paned wooden doors that open to a hot tub and classic views of Tomales Bay. The ground floor also has a full kitchen, dining area, propane-powered hearth, pullout couch and a piano. The upstairs is a slanted-roof, open-loft area with 2 full beds, and can also house a child’s bed (sleeps 5-6 comfortably). The cottage, available for only an extra $150/night (except in high season), has a rustic, tasteful wooden interior, wood-burning and electric furnaces, a full kitchen, a main room with queen bed and dining area, a bedroom with a double futon on a frame, and a deck with a gorgeous view of the bay (sleeps 3-4 comfortably). There also is a separate wooden shingled studio that can be used for a yoga or meditation space, as a game room, or as an art studio, or a fun sleeping cabin for kids in the summer. While Oaktopia Refuge is perfect for couples and friends, it is also child and family-friendly, with a swing-set, a swinging hammock as well as a large stone patio for basketball or badminton. Only 1 hour from Golden Gate and Richmond Bridges. We invite you to come stay in this unique and special retreat – for just a weekend to re-charge , or for a full week or 2 to really get to know the extraordinary natural wonder and cultural treasure that is Pt Reyes National Seashore. Lucked into Dean’s place at the last minute, and very glad I did. A rustic charmer with good vibes to spare, the Chalet was clean, spacious and well appointed with all sorts of cozy amenities. Enjoy the perfect view of Tomales Bay and its iconic ‘shipwreck’ from anywhere on the property, and settle in for a memorable stay.

So private, so beautiful, the photos do not do this home-away-from-home justice. Perfect location. A cabin-in-the-woods experience just minutes from town and from the hiking trails in the park. Great communication from the host. Would recommend and return!

Two of us (one in her 40s, one in her 80s) stayed here for a weekend. As other reviewers have noted, the listing as 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom on VRBO is inaccurate and should be modified, as you have to pay more to rent a separate cottage to have the second bedroom and bathroom. This is really a 1 bedroom, 1 bath open-floor cottage. The redeeming feature of this rental is its location and extraordinary views over the shipwreck in Inverness and Tomales Bay. Indeed, we very much enjoyed sitting on the couch looking out over the bay.
The "chalet" itself is a quaint, open plan cottage, with no internal doors for privacy except on the bathroom, which is upstairs. There are more than a dozen uneven steps outside down to the cottage and though there are light fixtures, the pathway is not lit as these fixtures are not working. The kitchen is equipped with worn-out appliances (a coffee maker with all the button labels worn away and a button popped out, for example, so we had to google an image to see how to make it work; non-stick pans with scratched up insides; the refrigerator door would not stay closed). As other reviewers have noted, the sheets are threadbare (there were actually holes in the sheets I used), pillows are heavily stained, and the second bed is actually a futon with a large stain on the mattress. In addition, it was not clean - there was abundant short white hair (cat?) on my pillowcase and a healthy dose of dust.
We have rented several other properties in the area and for the price, I would have expected a much better maintained rental. This felt like staying at a friend's house who moved their old sheets from the 80s and furniture they didn't need anymore to their country cottage.

The view and location are lovely. However, VRBO should not list the Chalet as 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The chalet itself has one open sleeping space and one bathroom, both up a set of steep and somewhat slippery stairs. As owner adds in his description you have to rent the cottage for an extra fee if you want an additional bedroom and bath. While some people found the inside "rustic" to me it seemed rather worn, certainly for the price we were charged.

Awesome view, perfect location!

Good place to stay near Pt. Reyes Natl Seashore. Sleeping areas don't have curtains so best for those like us who prefer to get up with the sun.

This home is wonderful! Such a special adventure. The peace and magic of the home and property are unmatched. We loved our stay here!

Our family of four rented the chalet and enjoyed a wonderful weekend break. We found the home to be very spacious for our family and the views were absolutely beautiful.
We really appreciated all of the fun boardgames provided, and found this as an ideal location for exploring Point Reyes.

Our family stayed at Oaktopia for 3 nights and could have stayed longer. The house and grounds are beautiful and so comfortable. The proximity to all of the hiking and beaches cannot be beat. We hiked the Estero trail which is gorgeous and full of life and spent the day hiking, chilling and paddle boarding at Heart's desire. In the evenings we cooked, enjoyed the expansive view, and soaked in the hot tub. We can't wait to go back. Highly recommend this stay.

The two homes are as shown in the listing: perched on a hill above Tomales Bay with beautiful views. Dean was an excellent host, guiding us throughout our experience as needed. We never did get the hot tub Ph balanced in spite of having a couple experienced hot tub owners in our group. Other than that, the experience was lovely.
By the way, the cost for renting the whole property is higher than just renting the main house.

The location and views are enough reason to stay here. Easy drive in either direction to miles of hiking and beautiful beaches.
As other reviews have pointed out, the listing is a bit confusing. You should note that this is 2 separate properties that rent separately. There is not a cabin with 2 bathrooms (each cabin has 1 bath). Something to consider if you are sharing the space with other couples.
It would benefit from a microwave, but otherwise has everything you need to enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Dean's place is a total dream. The photos really don't do it justice. We had a great time celebrating my birthday up in the hill with a fantastic view (while only being a few minute drive from coffee)

We LOVED Oaktopia- the views are spectacular, and my (east coast, city kids) loved all the wildlife- hummingbirds, a banana slug, even a beautiful BUCK! (He came right up to the kitchen window to say hello). I felt so relaxed and at home in this cozy retreat. My kids loved it too— a short drive from some of the most amazing Pacific coast line.
One note for families— there is only one bathroom in the chalet, and it’s upstairs (so if your kids sleep up there be prepared to tip toe past them lol).

The location of the house was great for our short getaway. It’s walking distance to Inverness and Inverness Station with access to restaurants and markets. The setting of the house is great with amazing views of Tómales Bay as you sit in the hot tub. The listing is a bit confusing, as the main house is only one bedroom and one bathroom. You have to pay extra for the guesthouse which includes the additional bedrooms and bathroom. Also, they do ask you to do a few tasks like maintaining the hot tub chemical levels, stripping beds, and hauling away the trash. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.

Cozy, comfortable Inverness house. Dean’s house felt very “old Inverness” (in a great way!). Easy check and and communication. Comfortable, well-stocked kitchen, books and games etc. Great for a small family. Incredible views from the property and fantastic location for both Inverness and Point Reyes Station.

Really enjoyed our stay. Nice cottage, beautifully furnished on a forested hillside overlooking Tomales Bay.

The hot tub was lovely, the house is artsy and cozy, and the views of the bay are incredible! Every one in our group of kids and adults felt instantly relaxed and at home. It is so nice to be surrounded by trees and feel so sheltered and private, but also be so close to the cute town of Pt Reyes and all the beautiful beaches and trails of the area. Thank you for sharing your Oaktopia with us, Dean!

Our family came from far and wide so my kids, their spouses and children could be with us to celebrate our youngest’s PhD commencement. The views are amazing, the kids had lots to occupy them inside and out, beds we’re comfortable and the feel of the place is something special. I’m so happy we were able to stay there, and hope to rent it again.

This is a lovely property with views of Tomales Bay and a very welcoming interior with a piano and paintings on the wall. The house sits atop a hill with land surrounding. The privacy of the house, and the sense of nature at your door (there is a frog pond just outside), is deeply relaxing. Dean does ask his renters to do some work, including cleaning up, stripping beds (and washing if renters are game), and checking the chlorine for the hot tub. So that should be expected. Overall, this is a really nice place to stay and I hope to do so again.

Dean is a great host and Oaktopia Refuge is a very special place with amazing views. We loved the secluded spot and there is so much to see and do in the surrounding area.

Really great place to stay in Inverness. Lovely waterviews from the living room and the upstairs sleeping area (two queen beds and one small child's bed in open area upstairs, along with bath upstairs). Interior all natural wood, mostly pine with cherry floors downstairs, and eclectic but great furnishings. Enjoyed the stay.

The house was clean and not far from Inverness tucked away in the trees. Great view of the Inverness shipwreck. It's a quirky comfortable little house. Perfect for day hikes and outings and nice restaurants and food! We would definitely stay here again.

This was a wonderful pre valentines trip for my partner and I and we are looking forward to the chance to come back with our family! The property was cozy and rustic just as described and the towns, both Inverness and Point Reyes, made for a truly perfect getaway! Dean was responsive and kind and we enjoyed every minute of the privacy, hot tub, and slow pace of the Oaktopia

Beautiful well loved property with a few maintenance issues. If you
are looking for traditional luxury it likely will not fit your needs but if you’re looking for a Lovely view with a bit of an unconditional lay out and an artistic feel it may be right for you The garden and trees are stunning -
*futons for 3 of the beds. Which we slept well on.

Both the main house and the guest cottage are charming and comfortable, and the location / view are just amazing. Dean was wonderful to communicate with, even when on his own vacation.

Everything just slowed down for my family and another family during our stay here. No TV meant board games every night and we made use of the well stocked kitchen to have a two family Thanksgiving. Every day we soaked in the hot tub and took in the views. We also hiked, biked, and paddle boarded. We had a great weather and Dean was very warm, welcoming, and flexible as a host. Plus he had great advice for our stay about places to go and things to do. Thanks for a great Thanksgiving

What a magical place to escape! This little cabin is cozy, beautiful and has an amazing view. The hosts went above and beyond to be helpful and make our stay comfortable. We can't wait to go back.

The views from the property can’t be beat. Very close to dining options in Inverness and Point Reyes Station. The house is rustic as advertised but comfortable and you can’t beat the location.

This cabin is located in the perfect place to take in the beauty of Tomales Bay. Set on a picturesque oak-wooded lot, the house lets in a ton of light, even on the foggiest Marin county days. IT is just a short walk to the Point Reyes Shipwreck and the Inverness store that has everything you need for your stay or even dinner over at the Saltwater Oyster Depot.
The home owner was super helpful and friendly. I will certainly stay here again.

The latest COVID surge made a planned trip to Hawaii inadvisable, so I was scrambling at the last minute for Plan B.
I stayed at the cottage with one friend. We had a relaxing time hanging out at the house reading, relaxing, and soaking in the hot tub. The property is on Tomales Bay with easy access to kayaking and hiking.
I wish the listing had more photos, as what is shown does not communicate how lovely the home and property is. You walk in the front door, into the living room, and you see a beautiful view of the bay and the Point Reyes shipwreck. The same view is seen from the hot tub. The walls of the home are covered with beautiful paintings; original and gorgeous art. The upstairs is a large open loft space with two full beds which are tucked into nooks on opposite sides of the loft area. Although technically my friend and I were sleeping in the same room, it felt more private than that.
The kitchen was well equipped. Sharp knives! A rarity in rental properties!
At night, the view of the stars on the Bay side of the house were beautiful and were spectacular from the darker "front" of the house. I suggest turning off all the lights and letting your eyes adjust for a few minutes. Wow! The house is up a long driveway, surrounded by trees, and is secluded. I often find vacation rental photos show a house as if it is secluded but then it turns out to be in a neighborhood. The only other structure visible from this rental is another small house on the property that can be booked along with the main house for added space. I stayed at this home with just one friend but there is room for many more depending on how friendly you are and if you want to book the extra space.
The owner was very available by text, e-mail and phone, even though we had no need to contact him after arrival. He checked in with us when we got there to make sure everything was okay.
I highly recommend this property for a quiet, cozy retreat, but with easy access to outdoor activities and food.
