Berkshire Retreat Near Hiking, Outdoors, and Walkable to Town
About this house rental
The Pinecone House is located in Norfolk CT, which is a beautiful outdoor retreat located an easy 2.5 hour drive from NYC & Boston. The town itself is quaint and has a small downtown with a country store, farmer’s market, liquor store, Infinity Music Hall, and a few shops and restaurants, which is about a fifteen minute walk from the house or five minute drive. The town also hosts a Yale summer music residency program, which offers lots of free concerts during the summer (also walkable from the house). Norfolk also has large swaths of conservation land and offers ample hiking, including a trail head about a five minute walk from the house, along with Haystack Mountain State Park, Campbell Fall State Park, and Dennis Hill State Park, all within a ten minute drive. And lots of farms within a short drive, and other outdoor opportunities including boating. There are larger groceries, liquor stores, restaurants and pharmacies within a 10-15 minute drive, for example in Winsted, CT. Norfolk is also considered to be located in the foothills of the Berkshires. Great Barrington is about a 25 minute drive, and other Berkshire staples like Tanglewood, Kripalu, and Jacob’s Pillow are all within a 45 minute drive. Hudson and Chatham NY are about an hour away as well.

Great house! Close to town. Looked newly renovated. Perfect for our purpose in the area.

We rented this VRBO for our family as our daughter was getting married in Colebrook and we are all from out of state. The living room was spacious and it fit everyone comfortably. I did buy an air mattress and it came in handy as one of the 4 bedrooms had a bed with side rails that was too small to fit 2 adults. I have to say it was pretty comical as we put my 6' tall brother in the bed and my sister-in-law on the air mattress. There were sufficient housewares and plenty of towels and sheets. The retro kitchen was super cute! All in all, I would highly recommend this property!

I'm born and raised in the area but haven't lived there for 25 years. This house is an amazing gem in the area. The house is large, great for babies and kids, and easy location. I will definitely stay here again when visiting family.

The ease, utility and beauty of this property made it the perfect holiday weekend getaway for our group of four female friends from down state. Though only an hour+ away, we felt 1000 miles from home. We appreciated the home's thoughtful aesthetic and well appointed kitchen and bathrooms. The fact that we each had our own bedroom was key in why we chose this property. The bedrooms felt private and secluded. A real bonus. We hiked, antiqued, and took in a concert at Tanglewood. Just perfect. We're already looking for a fall weekend to re-book, so we can do it all over again - except this time with a fire in the fireplace. Thank you to our hosts for their graceful hospitality.

House is lovely and comfortable and just right for a family Thanksgiving - with well-equipped kitchen and large dining table. The nearby area had lots to explore - plus the town had a delightful singalong and tree lighting during our stay. (Forgive the delayed review!)

The house is beautifully renovated and achieves being both cozy and spacious. The location makes for easy walking access to Norfolk town center and is a convenient jumping off point for the many walks and hikes in the area. The kitchen was perfectly appointed, the bathrooms elegant and gleaming, the bedrooms fresh and tidy, and the art throughout the house, sublime.

The inside of the house was comfortable, nicely decorated, clean and tidy, however, the outside deck chairs and other outdoor facilities hadn't been cleaned in awhile - and that was a bit disappointing.
I would come back again! 😃

Family get together
I had rented this home as a central place to get together with my adult kids and just spend some time together. More than enough room for us all and everyone loved the home, the amenities and the area. We look forward to doing this again maybe in the spring.

The warmest home in a wonderful location
There's some magic in the air at this home in Norfolk. It's a charming historical house, thoughtfully updated with cozy comforts. It sits atop a little hill, with a great lawn in front that that puts the house just far enough back from the street, so we had privacy and never really heard cars passing by. The moment you walk in, you feel at ease, welcomed by a super-cozy sectional sitting in front of the working fireplace. The TV is tucked-away in a corner, and we enjoyed some fun, family movie nights. The layout of the house is smart and spacious, built for both hanging all together in common spaces, and quiet, intimate time in the roomy bedrooms (all comfy beds, too). With six adults and three kids, we never felt on top of each other. The design of the house is wonderful, from the cheerful palette and vintage-looking kitchen appliances, to the lovely furniture, intriguing artwork (I still think about that gold print in the living room!) and library. The kitchen is well-stocked with all the tools we needed to cook family dinners. Toy cabinet was clutch, too, for our kiddos. The backyard was the kids' favorite for running around and we even spotted a family of deer passing through at dusk one night! And the house is so conveniently located — a short 10-15 min walk (or 5 min drive) to the cutest town center. We were there for Memorial Day, which the town went all out for with a parade, ceremony, roadrace, foodtruck, etc. The country store was a great perk for some last-minute movie snacks. We also grabbed coffee there in the mornings — do not miss those cinnamon donuts... insane. Loved walking around the town and exploring the surrounding streets and homes. We also took the most beautiful drives, weaving through the woods/farms/fields to see cute little towns around Western CT and up to Massachusetts — ate tons of farm-fresh food and scored a few antiques to bring home. Overall, such a great getaway and we look forward to coming back this winter. Can only imagine it's as magical as it was in May.
