I have stayed at the Claremont several times over the past few years, and I usually have no complaints. But my check in experience during this last stay left a lot to be desired. I arrived for check in late (I believe around 11 p.m.) and had paid for the room in advance. Because I didn't have a physical credit card on me, I attempted to put the incidentals on my digital credit card (of which I had three). The front desk staff informed me that the system was not accepting them for some reason, and asked me to fill out a form, which I did. The first card/form also was declined. I filled out a second form, which also was declined. Then I was told to contact my credit card directly and there was nothing the hotel could do for me, which I did. 30 minutes later after getting a response from the credit card company that there was in fact a hold on my card from the hotel, I asked the front desk what I can do next. The person at the desk tried again and lo and behold my card was accepted. Meanwhile, I saw at least four holds on my card from the hotel. Yet, instead of double-checking and triple-checking your system, I was made to feel like the problem was on my end. It took me about 40 minutes to be able to check in and access my room closer to midnight. All in all, it was a very unpleasant start to my stay, and even though I am a member, I will not be returning any time soon.

The hotel itself is beautiful, historic, they have made some great updates. The beds were very comfortable, amazing pillows. We were on the backside towards the hills. The bathroom was freezing. Old windows and drafty. The light in the shower flicker on and off. Meal wise, we had great room service. The breakfast the next morning threw us as it was a brunch only menu. We had hoped to pick a la carte options which were not available from the main menu. What we did order was good however.

My daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren (8,10) have stayed at the Claremont each time they’ve come to Berkeley from Spoken. This time the were “wowed” by the spacious Jr. Suite I booked for them. And the marble-floored bathroom! Kiddos swam morning & night; family hit tennis balls for an hour with loaner gear; hotel staff were gracious & helpful. Fabulous get-away! Five Star!
