Never updated their rooms, probably since it first opened. Beds are hard and squeaky. Bedspread totally outdated. My grandma had the bath tile in her kitchen moons ago. It was very clean.

I really wish I could attach pictures. Bay window facing lake superior had black mold and almost all the caulking was gone. Big stains on carpet, micorowave dodnt work. Crowning around base of bathroom door crumbling. I tiny TV 29 inch. Continental breakfast was a joke. For almost $200 a night is a complete Rip off!!

carpet and bedding seemed original to the building. refrigerators sat on the floor with dirty carpet ring around it. various items left in multiple drawers in the room. the pool and spa area smelt heavily of must and mildew, we didn't even bother chancing our health to go swimming.

Staff was very pleasant. Room was clean and quiet with a great view.

Pretty cheap/dated feel to the property

Really nice - clean, well-kept, accommodating staff, and within walking distance of Lake Superior and downtown Grand Marais.

Great experience.

the view was great, the room had an unpleasant odour when you first went in

Room was quiet and comfortable. Breakfast offered good variety.

jacuzzi was not clean

There should have been more control around the pool area
as there were some guests bothered by other guests.
Throwing footballs.

The area was great and the price was the cheapest around. Staff was great and they serve worlds best donuts in the mornings! The only thing would be the carpet in the room. Defintely didnt wanna walk around without socks on

Bed was comfortable, bathroom and shower worked well. Liked the space to layout all of our things plus the extra work table. It was a pleasant and expected one night stay. Breakfast was ok and to be expected for this type of lodging. It wouldn't hurt if the beds had a comforter type spread. Those nylon bedspreads are so antiquated it gives the bed abit of the ick factor.

People were very friendly. Just needs to be updated and breakfast have better coffee! Has feel of being on a tight budget (styrofoam cups, cheap paper plates, using gallon of milk for milk)

Great view of Lake Superior. The staff was very friendly. The whole place needs new carpeting though. Very stained and dirty looking, kind of brought the whole place down.

Our first trip to North Shore. gave us good understanding of the geography the history of the Native Americans and the shipping and Iron Range history.Staying at Aspen Lodge gave us a good experience to enjoy the trip.

The service was excellent. Friendly and courteous staff. Our room did not have cable. The pool smelled badly and was not clear. The staff worked on it, but I am doubtful that it would pass a health inspection. The hot tub cleared after treatment. Badly stained carpet and one of the windows did not have a screen. We got a good AARP discount.

Great view No elevator. When got there the person said there was no reservation for us Then when my husband showed up she said here it is. The carpeting in our room was filthy and either needs a deep cleaning or replacement. No coffee pot in room

Two issues. First, there were no tub mats. Bathtubs are slippery especially for the elderly. Luckily, I had shower sandals in my gym bag. Second, TV. They made the decision to go all streaming which deprived me of real-time cable news for my entire stair

We love the Aspen Lodge and will be back. Appreciate that they help conserve by not replacing linens and towels every day. It's a great little find!

No free local or National tv stations available!!! A real drawback. Only hundreds of reruns.

Walking distance from everything in town. Friendly staff. Quiet neighborhood even though close to the hyway. Easy in, easy out with vehicles.

Hotel is clean, good location, no issues.

The hotel and its staff were fantastic. It was very well kept and clean. Every staff member was friendly and helpful. Will definitely consider staying here again in the future.

Good location!

The location is great. Walking distance to the beach, Artists point and several restaurants. Staff was friendly. The hotel itself could use a good cleaning, paint and new carpet. The carpet in our room was very stained. Beds were clean but looked like the sheets and pillowcases were put on haphazardly. Plenty of towels and washcloths and a decent fridge in the room. No screen on a 2 nd story window. Also the exterior doors were generally unlocked. Pool, sauna and hot tub were decent. But again the room, including shower room could use some fresh paint. Made it appear dirty. Overall, it was a bit pricey considering the condition of the facility.

Great location and good value. It’s dated but maintained with a nice staff.

We liked how close to downtown it was. We were able to walk everywhere which we really liked. We very much enjoyed the view from the 3rd floor over looking the lake. The room its self was clean, the campus was clean and the geounds were clean. The staff was very friendly. This is just a small thing but more pillows would be nice as there were only 3. Otherwise we enjoyed our stay.

Overall, hotel was nice but some what outdated. Continental breakfast was decent with good options and variety. Hotel pool water was cloudy, but kids still seemed to like it

Overpriced and run down property, but it was clean. It felt like $79 hotel room for $200 per night. The bedding was unappealing, like the old 80's shiny polyester bed coverlets and hard, down pillows. Coffee was so bitter we had to go out for coffee each day we were there. I don't think it's the actual coffee that was bad, but they way they brewed it. No elevator on property so you will have to lug your suitcase up 2 flights of stairs, which can be challenging for some guests. Not bad, just run down and outdated. Rooms could also use a microwave. All staff members we encountered were pleasant.

The hotel was not the cleanest place to stay and the beds weren't super comfortable.
3.0
We had a beautiful view from our window of the lake. The room was spacious, however it is definitely showing its wear.

The bed was the worst. You have to be careful of your back, neck because the beds are awful. We had to get our keys replaced numerous times because they immediately stop functioning if they get near a phone. Breakfast was basically toast and bad coffee. Lots of $$ for a pretty rundown place. But the staff were nice and friendly and it was clean.

Internet spotty. No cable or satellite TV. Pricey for no tv and sparse quality of breakfast. Under renovation so construction debris.
5.0
It is probably a bit outdated but very clean and well taken care of. Really nice personnel, quite location. Stayed there several times, and will definitely return for more.

The property was under construction, which was not noted when booking. The entrances that were specified as being available we locked. The keycards are poor quality that don't retain their settings, the staff member at the desk told me I must have placed it near a magnet (I hadn't).
The rooms are dated, but were largely clean. The beds were not comfortable, both myself and my partner woke up with sore backs each morning. There was trim missing in the bathroom near the tub/door. The doorstop for the bathroom door comes up from the floor directly centered in front of the tub (poor design choice). The TV is small, and isn't centrally placed in the room. Multiple lights were not operational. No wi-fi information is show/included in the rooms, nor was it communicated during check-in.
The shining moment from this came after we left, the staff member working the front desk confirmed an item was left behind and retrieved it for us before we even got back to the property.
The price is commensurate with other properties in the area - but with how high the rate is, I would expect a higher caliber of service and amenities.

The staff was all very friendly and helpful. Facility was clean and neat inspite of work being done on the outside of the building.

This property is right in the middle of Grand Marais, so everything is pretty close and in walking-distance. The hotel itself is a pretty standard hotel, with average, but older rooms. I think I'd downgrade my rating of this hotel because the parking there is sketchy, at best, and because they were doing construction on the facility. My room did not have a balcony, and the estate doesn't have anything on the beach, though, they tell you the public access beach is within a block or so. The thing is, the "public access" beach is just outside the Best Western, and the Best Western has balconies and fire pits on the beach. All in all, because the hotel is kind of just average, but also older and under construction, I think I'd rate it as a so-so stay.
4.0
VERY, VERY CLEAN. Only complaint would be the coffee: awful.
