This is a ramshackle “dystopian paradise” created by the ‘founder’, Miguel. He has built these “structures” out of tree planks and pallets for the floor. It’s questionable how sturdy they really are and frankly made us quite nervous. It’s essentially a mattress on the floor with a mosquito net. If you are really into camping, this isn’t too bad. Honestly, it wouldn’t have been that bad an experience save for a few things: 1) there is no fan, aka no air circulation, aka you are drenched in your sleep. Get used to sleeping in the bare minimum. 2) the walls are wood planks, so you better hope you don’t have anyone that snores near you (like we did!) and cannot sleep (we ended up sleeping in the car anyway :/ ...) 3) the drive back is INCREDIBLY rustic- the road is hazardous/ pothole-laden, and the drive specifically back to this “community” is barely wide enough for a vehicle and is lined with barbed wire. We ended up making it down okay, but scraped the rental car coming back because it’s nearly impossible to fit an SUV (which is what you need to get back here!) down this road. Overall, I would say - this is okay for camping. The beach is magical and we saw the most beautiful sunset of our time in CR.

The hosts, Miguel and Pilar are so very friendly and helpful. Pilar's meals were delicious. Right on the beach, the setting is Paradise. Be advised, this is camping, glorified. Sweet open walled private rooms with curtains as doors; it's like sleeping outdoors. You need to like (or at least not mind) sand on your feet - it's on a beach. Ditch the shoes, hop through hot sand or wear flipflops the entire time. No refrigeration, but Miguel will provide a cooler. The cooking in the shared kitchen is basic, I wouldn't know where to start to make a fire to cook; luckily you don't have to, Pilar cooks lunch and dinner if you let her know ahead. Breakfast is gratis, isn't that nice? I will return.

My stay at Miguel's was more than I could have hoped for. It was the adventure I was looking for and the peace I needed. Miguel and his family are the cutest and they are creating a wonderful thing with the Surf Camp! It's an experience I will never forget and hope to have again one day. This place is not meant for luxury but more as hotel like no other - an ocean view in the morning, jungle noises as you fall asleep, no concrete and simple living. Community coffee talk in the morning, coconuts during the day and amazing food served by Miguel's wife, who I adored. I constantly think about swimming during sunset, trying surfing, the always private beach, the local fruit man I would stock up from, the walk down the one sandy road in town. I could go on forever. This is an experience not to be missed. Easy to get to and from Quepos on the boats, by foot is much better than by car.
