Find that unique adventure at the local natural wonders and check out the local history of the area, and even of the house itself! The Crazy Wave Suite is named for the fun wavey brick hearth that dominates the wall in the main living area, a design element that reflects the playful whimsy of the house! It once hosted a woodburning stove, but the stove was removed by former occupants. The space now has a very cool burl table serving as a focal point for the room. Here's some stuff we love to do around here: Clam Beach! (3.2 miles, 6 minutes) Mad River Beach! (9.3 miles, 17 minutes) Beau Pre Golf Club (1.2 miles, 3 minutes) Arcata Community Forest (9.7 miles, 13 minutes) Trinidad Head (9 miles, 12 minutes) Sequoia Park & Zoo (16.8 miles, 23 minutes) Cal Poly Humboldt (7.3 miles, 10 minutes) Arcata Plaza & Saturday Farmer's Market (7.8 miles, 13 minutes) Stuff we like to do: Kayaking! Horseback riding! Shopping for cool redwood burls and slabs! Avenue of the Giants - every single time and it never gets old! Lady Bird Johnson Grove! Coffee at Shotz in Rio Dell! (Everything there is good. Everything.) Swipe Right Cider from the Humboldt Cider Company in Eureka! Moonstone Crossing wine tasting in Trinidad! Spying on Elks at the Lagoons! Axe throwing! ...and of course, morning coffee on the SkyDeck! Wait, What Am I Looking At? Yeah, it’s kind of hard to get your mind around it. Visitors intuitively stare a bit, then inevitably walk 360 degrees around the perimeter to take it in. You'll probably spy someone passing by to stop and stare up! The logic of the place invites curiosity. The layout is intimate and could seem small if not for the mindful intention of the diminished proportions. This is balanced by plentiful and tall windows that make the outside (and the changing light throughout the day) feel like part of the rooms. The natural materials invite every surface to be touched and enjoyed. The rooflines can challenge the eye, and their natural movement inspires contemplation and makes the small footprint feel spacious. The playful chimneys give the home a sense of not taking itself too seriously (it doesn't). The vertical orientation, strange outdoor staircase, and prominent rooftop deck balance the comfort of the interiors by stretching residents a bit out of their comfort zones, displacing both eye body with new visual and spatial experiences. The house looks delightfully unique from itself from every angle and almost like it shouldn't be allowed. Ok, that’s poetic and all, but tell me about this place! There are three separate units in the house, each with its own external entrance: the first floor apartment, the second floor apartment, and the studio bedroom in the tower. We rent out all three units and as owners, frequently visit whichever one is open to stay in ourselves. Don't worry, we'll give you your privacy! Bet sure to climb to the Skydeck in the morning and take a photo of your shadow standing on top of the house as projected below! Easily accessible from highway 101. Neighborhood access is primarily by car and there is little foot traffic. There are Zipcars available in the area (not walkable from the house), as well as Lyft and Uber services. There is a fast electrical vehicle (EV) charger in downtown Arcata near the central plaza. If you needed to walk to the airport, you could!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Sky Deck. We were visiting family over the holidays and found the rental to be very clean, cozy and welcoming as well as very simple and uniquely furnished. The artistic touches were fun and the sky deck was a nice feature.

My wife and I spent four nights here while visiting our daughter at Cal Poly Humboldt. It felt like a home away from home and we really enjoyed our time in this cool, comfortable, and funky space. We will definitely look to stay here again when we come back. In the neighborhood that the house is in, you do feel like you're in a castle on the hill and that everyone is looking at you. We didn't mind this, but I could see how some might. It was foggy and chilly for our entire stay, so we didn't make much use of the deck, but it would be a great place to relax on a warm day (though it could use some comfortable chairs up there, perhaps). No major complaints, but a couple of suggestions for the owners: Another lamp in the main living area would be nice. The little table lamp and the overhead lights provide two extreme lighting choices - very dim or very bright. A second lamp could make it just right. The space could also use more seating. When my daughter was over visiting, two of us sat on the lounge chairs, and the third person (usually me) was relegated to a hard dining room table chair. Not ideal.

Interesting architecture. Very nice for a three night stay. The kitchen is very functional. The bed is comfortable. The hardwood floors and wood doors and trim are handsome.

This was a charming little house. We enjoyed our stay. But be aware that there is no TV. There is a monitor that is not connected to anything, and there is no remote control to turn it on.
