A hamlet on the Mediterranean coast, sheltered by the seigniorial tower erected around 1300, Saint-Nazaire took off in the 16th century. The port of Sanary is recognized as one of the most typical and authentic on the French Mediterranean coast. A very old natural harbor, located in the heart of the town, it boasts some one hundred heritage boats, the oldest dating back to 1895, including the famous Provencal "pointus". A village turned towards the sea, Sanary was also home to some of the greatest names in German culture: Thomas Mann, Heinrich Mann, Klaus Mann, Erika Mann, Lion Feuchtwanger, Arnold Zweig, Franz Hessel... all lived in Sanary-sur-Mer between 1933 and 1942.
