Large 100-year-old family cottage, claw-foot bathtub & lots of deck and porch!
About this house rental
LaMotte Cottage has been in the LaMotte family since 1939. Originally built in 1917, it is now over 100 years old, with the history and charm that only comes with a century of good memories being created there. The front porch is great for watching the hummingbirds, and the large side deck can easily accommodate a pretty large group of friends. Nestled in the rhododendrons, and therefore shady and cool in the summer, the house is heated with a wood stove and small space heaters, should you need them. In the summer, it is cooled — quite effectively — by open windows, electric fans and shady trees. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower. One bedroom has a double bed, the second has a double and a single, and the third has two singles. Downstairs, the living room/dining room, kitchen, porch, deck, one bedroom, and one bathroom with the original claw foot bathtub (deep and luxurious, in an old school, really old school, way!). The kitchen is well-outfitted, with oven, stove, microwave, drip coffeemaker, etc. LaMotte Cottage is the kind of place that invites long evenings of good conversation, jigsaw puzzles, and a glass of wine. It also has cable TV and high-speed WiFi. Montreat offers beautiful hiking trails, a lake, gift shops, and snack bar. In the summer canoes and paddle boats can be rented and there is a free community barn dance with live music on Friday nights! Flat Creek, just across the road, has a lovely walking path beside it and is easily accessible for a pleasant walk, rock hopping, or place to cool your watermelons on a warm day! A lifelong family destination for our family's summer vacations, it has shown up in poems, songs, paintings, and many, many stories. We hope you will enjoy creating a few of your own here and will return often.

Gracious host provided so many amenities down to the cinnamon shaker in the kitchen pantry! Even though the weather turned damp and chilly we were snug and cozy thanks to the dry firewood already inside and the numerous space heaters throughout. Perfect respite for us! Hope to return for a longer stay soon!

In the rhododendron valley that is a beloved mountain retreat. You can hear the mountain stream out the open windows. Excellent location to walk & explore from, as well as pop into Black Mountain for treats. Was the house full of irregular angles, steep stairs, lumpy mattresses, charm, one of a kind self-published historíes, family memories, board games, & dry firewood!? Of course it was, it’s a Montreat cottage! Nothing modern about it. Highly recommend!

Nice older home. Stayed pretty cool even with high temps in Montreat. We brought a couple of our own large fans to provide better air circulation, it really helped!

Loved this cottage at Montreat. Perfect Location for peace and quiet. Felt very welcome and at home in this cottage. My daughter, grandson, and I had a delightful time. Cottage very convenient to all of Montreat ( the Huckleberry, Barn Dance, playground, etc.) Even convenient to Black Mountain.

Lamotte Cottage adds updates every year while maintaining the charm and integrity of the historic cottage. It is a wonderful location in Montreat, the trees surrounding the cottage provide a sheltered environment and keep the house cool. The kitchen is well-equipped for cooking. There are added personal touches of books to read, music to listen to, and games to play.
It is a wonderful space for rest and renewal.

This was a girls trip for three generations. The LaMotte cottage was like taking my daughters and granddaughters back to my grandmother’s home. Delightful!

We enjoyed our stay at LaMotte Cottage while attending graduation ceremonies at Montreat College which included our daughter. This place provides the experience and charm of an old Montreat house, it provides all our group of 8 needed for a two night stay, and we particularly enjoyed the front porch as a place to sit, relax and talk awhile — wish we’d had more time there for more of that.

This is a great older property within walking distance to Montreat and trails. We visited for the 7 Sisters 25k trail race and this was a perfect location for our weekend of hanging out and running on the trails around Montreat. Treat yourself and visit this place and area.

You could just feel the history in this quaint cabin when you walk through the door. It was a perfect spot for our family to stay while watching my daughter play soccer for the weekend.

This was a perfect rustic mountain cottage in a great beautiful location. Trails start right across the street. Short walk to Montreat college (.5 miles). Short drive to downtown Black Mountain with lots of shops and restaurants. Very responsive owner.

We loved this property it was perfect and well equipt. The only draw back was no air conditioning. But we opened the windows.

Lovely convenient, quiet location barely a 5 minute drive to Black Mountain and all the highways leading to all the wonderful places in NC. BUT, not for the mobility challenged. The long pathway from the parking to the house is a gently sloping, gravel path with a partial handrail that needs extending at each end. The porch has good steps and handrails. The interior has barely adequate lighting throughout and very few outlets, the 2nd floor is for the brave and agile only. The stairway is steep and narrow. There is everything you need throughout the house (and too much in some cases) but no AC or dishwasher. The kitchen could benefit from a deep cleaning and editing of items especially the total chaos of the utensil drawer and pantry. The stove works fine and there is plenty of hot water and the refrigerator is new. The first floor bathroom has a bathtub, no shower but a handy washer and dryer and lots of big fluffy towels. The deck looks good and is very handy with a gas grill, we had no occasion to use it. The owner is very easy to contact. We chose this property due to its location around the corner from our daughter in Montreat. We fixed breakfast only and were gone all day until after dinnertime, so did not spend much any time in the house. It has lots of potential but is rather gloomy in its present condition.

To Grandmas House We Go!
Quaint, somewhat rustic cottage with an at home feel.. Nice front porch and back deck. No central heat or ac. But we didn’t need it. There is a fireplace and space heaters.
Would have liked some better fans.

Great place to stay in Montreat!
The Lamotte Cottage is a lovely place for a retreat. The setting is peaceful and it is well located close to other things in the community.

It’s a great home and as others mentioned, a classic Montreat house. It has all you need (minus a dishwasher) and my kids took a ton of baths in the awesome bathtub. There’s some noise from the road as expected but a great space to relax and unwind.

The LaMotte cottage is the epitome of Montreat. When I think of Montreat, I picture nature, hiking, porch time with family, and old houses. If you're looking for the Montreat experience, this is the place to stay. The house has character, it's nearby to everything in Montreat and just a short trip to nearby Black Mountain. We spent much of our time on the front porch reading, playing games, working on puzzles, and just rocking and listening to the sounds of the creek. The host, David, is super responsive, has a good sense of humor, and is just a picture of true kindness. We can only hope that this property is available for our family the next time we travel to Montreat. Would highly recommend!

Great space in Montreat
The Lamotte cottage is a charming and comfortable home that utilizes the fresh mountain air and trees to create a wonderful getaway and space for family and sabbath. The porch and yard (with plenty of trees to hang hammocks) are great places to relax and enjoy the setting. The house is in an excellent location to conveniently walk to all spaces in Montreat and easily get to Black Mountain. Many of the windows were updated beautifully this year. David is an excellent and hospitable host, making checking, the stay, and checking out easy and is always responsive if there are issues. We highly recommend this location and host!

Weekend in the Mountains
The property was charming and eccentric, exactly what you would expect from a 100 year old house in the mountains. The location was perfect, as we were in Montreat for a wedding. David was very welcoming and a wonderful host.

David called us before the trip to make sure we felt comfortable with the accommodations and it would be a good fit. He went out of his way to be helpful and looked out for our best interests. Truly cared about us as a family! We were affected by Hurricane Zeta and unable to take the trip. He was willing to work with us so we were not penalized for unforeseen circumstance. We will definitely work with him in the future!

Montreat Hideaway
Had a great time exploring the area. Walking distance to Montreat College campus and a local park near a large stream. Also a short drive to Black Mountain with nice shops, restaurants and a cute coffee shop. Make sure to eat at Trailhead!
House was a great old home with lots of character. Plenty of room to spread out if you have a large family. We loved hearing the water stream in the morning and sitting out on the front porch in the evenings. The home is tucked back in some trees which is nice but you can still hear some traffic from the road- this did not bother us. Locals were friendly and owner was very accommodating with check in and offered us his favorite restaurants and hiking spots.
We drove one day to Ashville to explore and then was able to hike Mt. Lookout the next day.
Overall had a great stay- our only recommendation would be to replace the downstairs mattress. It was an older mattress and was doable but needed an upgrade:)
We will definitely be back to explore more of Montreat and Black Mountain.
