About this house rental
Nestled in Sanibel Island, this lovely house for £246 per night is a great option for your next trip. BIG NEWS; Captiva is coming back to life after the devastating hurricane in Sept. 2022. My house will be ready to receive guest as of January 28, 2023 with all new bedding, furniture, new kitchen, and baths, freshly painted inside and out with a tropical/nautical theme. Located on popular Wightman Lane, in the village area of Captiva, 'Rick's Retreat' is a ground level home originally built by Bette Davis and just steps to the beach! Freshly painted inside and out, this home is tastefully decorated in island and tropical decor. Exceptionally bright--simple and clean with all modern amenities and all appliances. 'Ricks' is not one of these palatial beach palaces with elevators, theaters, etc. More on the order of a deluxe cottage in a tropical setting, the way Captiva used to be! Included are 4 smart TVs with Xfinity streaming, stereo, all linens, beach chairs, towels, Enjoy the sunny front area with outside shower (showering under the stars at night is a real treat) and gas grill, or enjoy the private rear screened porch. Fully equipped kitchen (new in January 2022), two updated baths (January 2022), inside laundry, outside gas grill, three bedrooms plus enclosed den, all surrounded by lush vegetation and privacy and a short walk down a palm-shaded sandy lane to the beach. Rick's Retreat's prime village location lets one enjoy as many or as few amenities as one desires! Park your car; you will not need it! The most beautiful beach is at one end of the lane, with excellent restaurants at the other end; what more could one want! Some guest comments: 'My family and I had such a fantastic time in Captiva...Words cannot describe the beach there. I cried when it was time to come home. We had the best weather, great food and wonderful home to come back to at night. Thank you so much. We hope to get back down again...' and from another guest:'I just wanted to let you know what a great time my family had at your house. My husband and I both grew up in Florida and over the years have watched some of our favorite places disappear. So it was a real treat to be able to take our kids some place that reminded us of when we were little. Granted, Captiva has changed a lot, but your house and Wightman Lane felt like a time capsule. it's a special place. Thanks.' Our stay at Rick’s was great! The house is perfectly located near the beach and our favorite restaurants. We walked anywhere we wanted to go. The house is adorable, and very cozy. Rick and the Royal Shell staff were friendly and very accommodating. Highly recommend!

Wonderful Week
This is our second visit to Ricks. We had a spectacular time the house is warm and wonderfully decorated. It has an excellently equipped kitchen as well.
The location is superb and because you can literally walk to a selection of wonderful restaurants and be on the beach in minutes we thoroughly enjoyed this place.
However, the beds (mattresses) are horrible - my wife woke up each morning with an aching back. They are just not comfortable at
all. For this reason alone we won’t return. If the mattresses are upgraded we

The internet is unusable. Lighting could be better (less white bulbs). But we had a very nice stay.

Rick’s Retreat is clean, well-kept, and conveniently located close to everything desirable about Captiva. The owner was very caring and checked up on us to make sure our needs were met. The cottage is even more spacious than it looks online.

This property was awesome. It was spacious and had everything you need. Our dogs loved it. Short walk to the beach and restaurants. Definitely will be staying here again. It was so peaceful and relaxing.

Very clean rental
The rental was very clean. There was an issue with palmettos but the guy came to spray with in 2 hours. Very peaceful and relaxing.

Worst house on Wightman Lane
-When we arrived at the pick up office in Sanibel, we collected an envelope to find no keys within, so we figured there would be a lockbox with code entry. When we arrived to the house we found out that keys were supposed to be in the envelope and had no way inside. We had to contact the Royal shell property manager and proceed to their Captiva office to pick up our keys which they had originally forgot.
- Fire ants were trailing in restrooms from within walls and would end up in sink and around toilets and showers
-Woke up to a thick brown spider on the wall in the bedroom, easily 4in wide
-Had to smash a few roaches occasionally
-Dead bugs on walls in bathrooms, ceilings, etc.
-Freezer and kitchen smelled entirely of fish. We could not use ice maker because it reeked of fish
-Contacted the owner who was in shock of the complaints and offered to have a cleaning crew come out, which wouldn’t have done anything as we brought our own cleaning supplies and started scrubbing away at the freezer...on vacation yay
-Musty odor throughout the house
-Very uncomfortable beds and pillows were old and lacking of shape
-Woke up with large red ants in bed nightly and with bug bites
-Exterminators came out earlier in week and said there was rat feces on our vehicle, which had been parked for about a day
-Fire extinguisher is not up to code FYI, June 2001
-Entire front of property where there should be a drive way floods and becomes a muddy swamp. Not convenient especially with kids or when you’re carrying beach gear
-Pullout bed in back seating area is very old and uncomfortable. The bed framing jabs you in back
-Overall the place is extremely outdated and needs renovations
-I have been to Captiva numerous times and this, by far, was the worst place I’ve stayed. The previous reviews are what enticed me but shortly after arrival I knew I’d been duped!
-This is worst house on Wightman Lane. My family members stayed on same street at two other homes and they trump this place by a long shot. Luckily we spent most of our time at their houses because it really was a downer staying at Ricks Retreat
-The only pro I would say is location, beach is a 4 min walk
-Either Rick doesn’t know his property is going under and Royal shell is withholding information or he knows and just doesn’t care. Either way this house will be with us forever as one of the worst vacation homes, if not the worst, we’ve stayed at.

Great Place
Property just as listed and pictured. The beach chairs and umbrellas were a pleasant surprise. Check-in location is in Sanibel not Captiva and my lack of reading ahead almost made me drive by it but I noticed it just in time. Lots of restaurants, bars and shopping within walking distance. Beach too was a very short walk away. Look forward to returning.

Necessary Getaway
Lovely home...spotless...dogs loved the quick walk to beach...central to best restaurants on foot or golf cart...relieved a huge amount of stress! Lovely landscaping...reminded me of when I lived in the Bahamas. Thank you all...excellent getaway.

A Special Place
Rick’s Retreat is a special place reminiscent of old Florida and with all the comforts of home. The location can’t be beat, equidistant to town restaurants, bars and the beach. If shelling is a goal it is sad but true that the sea shell population has been decimated by greedy human shell seekers based on my observations over 40 yrs vacationing in the Sanibel Captiva islands. That said, its still one of the best beaches in the USA.

Rick's retreat was just so comfortable for me and my family! It was nice and cozy and my four-legged friends also enjoyed their stay too! Amazing location, as it is a hop and a skip away from all the yummy restaurants in the area and of course the beach.....my favorite being the Bubble Room! Totally recommend to stay here!

Perfect Captiva Location
My family (which includes a 6 year old and a 2 year old) absolutely loved this rental! This house is in the best location on Captiva in my opinion! It is on a quiet street so you feel secluded but you have the convenience of walking everywhere you need to go-restaurants, general store, rental place, etc). It is the same 3 minute walk to the beautiful beach as it is to the heart of downtown. The house had everything you could want or need for beach fun (wagon, cooler, a variety of chairs, and an incredible selection of beach toys for the kiddos) and for keeping yourselves entertained at the house (tons of books, games and a DVD player)! The beds were comfortable and the house was equipped with everything you’d ever need and more. The owner was incredibly responsive and very accommodating when we had an issue with check-in. It was COMPLETELY our fault-TIP:check your email frequently for updated information from the rental company! The beach at the end of the street was perfection and watching the sunsets from it was an awesome experience! We would HIGHLY recommend this rental to anyone looking for a wonderful family vacation especially one without the hassle of getting the kids into car seats all of the time! We are already discussing when we can go back!

Loved the house and location! The home is very clean and comfortable. It is well-furnished especially in the kitchen! We enjoyed the books and the games provided. We have stayed here several times and hope to do more in the future!

Meant to leave cleaners a note that spray is needed. Daughter in law was bitten by a spider in a towel in the back bathroom and we killed a spider in the kitchen.
Didn't mean to end negative. We would definitely go back.

Beach supplies are a bit worn and there were no beach towels, but we left a few new things behind that I’m sure will be used.
What serves as a front door to a deck was either an add on or a side door. Would love to see it as it must have once been with landscaping! A patio door from the twin bedroom is no useable as is, but would be a great place for the occupants to have morning coffee if it was cleaned up.
The only downside to renting through a management company is the lack of cooking supplies, ie. salt, pepper, etc and a few cleaning supplies. However, the dish soap, dishwasher soap and laundry soap were appreciated. The maintenance of the property is impeccable and a service call about a burned out bulb on the deck was immediate. I’d stay there again, but the kids want a pool, so we’ll upsize next year!

An Island treasure!
This was our second visit to Rick's Retreat. Only a 2 minute walk to the beach, the cottage is in a quiet section of old town Captiva. One of it's best features is that it is not a giant condominium. Perfect for a couple or small family and it's dog friendly. The interior is immaculate, and three bedrooms provide plenty of room to spread out. The screened in back porch is ideal for morning coffee and catching up on email or reading the paper. Except for some trips to nearby Ding Darling and Sanibel, the Subaru stayed parked for most of our stay! Everything you need is just a short walk away! A relaxing time in an environment that's extremely difficult to find in Florida resort areas. We hope to return many times in the coming years. Thanks Rick!
