A peaceful & uplifting retreat with AMAZING views in the heart of the mountains.
About this house rental
Situated in Waitsfield, this lovely house for £349 per night is a fantastic choice for your next vacation. As featured in Conde Nast Traveler (1/21/22) We are close to Vermont's premier skiing, hiking, and outdoor adventures. Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the beer, coffee, and ice cream mecca of Waterbury, are nearby. You’ll love the sunset views (6 of VT's highest peaks), the atmosphere (calming and uplifting), the coziness (huge sheepskin in front of the fireplace), and the attention to detail (live-edge wood details, spa-like bathroom). This is an incredible retreat for couples (families too), solo adventurers, and business travelers. Our Space Above the Clouds, a stand-alone guesthouse with private entrance, was built with attention to every detail and a commitment to creating a peaceful, uplifting environment. While you're likely to travel to Vermont to partake in its natural beauty and outdoor adventures it's so lovely here that you may never want to leave. Located at the end of a quarter-mile-long driveway that passes through birch and hemlock woods you'll find yourself perched at the top of the world overlooking a 180+degree mountain vista. Other than the adjacent main house (located nearby but placed so both houses have privacy), the only signs of life are lights twinkling across the valley at night and the wildlife that shares the land and soars over the valley. The 1000+ square foot open-concept second story can sleep up to four, while the 250+ sf main room downstairs can sleep another two. Upstairs the hand-crafted wooden headboard, made from local maple, is a one-of-a-kind work of art that creates privacy for the queen-size master bed. It situated so it has incredible views of the surrounding mountains and enjoys morning sunrises and evening sunsets. At the opposite end of the room, the reading nook has a sheepskin-covered daybed that can be separated into two twins or turned into a king-sized bed at night. The couch in the lower living room converts into a comfortable queen size bed (plus a memory foam topper for those who want it). Though the room downstairs is only separated by the staircase, the downstairs sleeping area is private because of the layout of the house. All bed linens, towels, and pillows are hotel quality with both down and non-down options. Our spa-like bathroom has a shower large enough for two with both rainfall and hand-held shower heads, plus a pebble floor to massage your feet. The sink is made from a hand-carved boulder and sits atop a spalted maple live-edge counter held up by a birch tree base harvested from our property. For those who want to bathe in the midst of Vermont's great outdoors, there is an outdoor shower that affords complete privacy and absolutely amazing views. For food prep and dining, the kitchen -- with a KitchenAid dishwasher and Euro-fridge under-counter fridge/freezer (plus a full-sized fridge/freezer downstairs) -- is equipped with gourmet appliances, including 2 high-efficiency portable induction units, a full-sized microwave oven, a countertop oven large enough to roast a chicken, an 8-cup Instant Pot, a Cuisinart Griddler, an 18" All Clad electric skillet, a Ninja food processor/blender, a fondue pot, a waffle iron (with waffle mix), an abundance of herbs, and a well-stocked pantry (including organic EVOO and 18-year balsamic vinegar). Plus we provide locally roasted organic coffee beans, a grinder, and 3 ways to prepare coffee (drip, Aeropress, and french press), and a milk frother. An assortment of teas is provided too, of course. Best of all, however, is the dining atmosphere because there are incredible views from every window and a beautiful granite counter surrounded by comfortable leather bar stools. On the other side of the room, the Italian cherry dining room table with leather chairs amply seats 4 (and can seat 6 in a more cozy way). Note: The table is new and is not shown in the photos. The living room, with a large propane fireplace and views in every direction, adjoins an 8'x20' deck with clear walls, providing an amazing place for outdoor living high up in the trees. During warm weather, sleep under the stars on the sumptuous deck furniture; BBQ and dine the garden patio. For your entertainment, the TV hooked is hooked up to DirecTV and has a Roku and DVD player. There is a high-quality Bluetooth speaker for your digital music. For some old-fashioned fun, there is a generous store of board games, books, and puzzles. Guest Access The whole guesthouse, including the deck, outdoor shower, and private side garden and patio are yours alone. Parking is available for up to two cars. Ask me if you need to bring more than two cars. Interaction with Guests During COVID-19, we are offering self-check-in. We live in the adjacent main house. While the homes are close to each other, both have complete privacy. We are semi-retired and work from home, so we're generally available to answer questions and provide any support you may need. Additional Services - Complimentary EV charging. - We can help you arrange private, in-house massages and/or yoga classes. Extra cleaning and laundry services are available, at a fee, with 24-hour advance notice. We can also arrange to have your refrigerator stocked with fresh local delectables, including the much-sought-after, #1-rated beer in the US -- Heady Topper by the Alchemist -- which is brewed nearby and only sold in Vermont. Things to Note We have two tiny, young dogs (Waldo and Beso). They may bark when they first see you, but they are otherwise just bundles of wagging tails and soft, hypoallergenic fur. Sorry, we are not able to accommodate any visiting pets. Neighborhood While you'll feel like you're at the end of the world, Above the Clouds is conveniently located 10 minutes off I-89, 20 minutes from Sugarbush, 30 minutes from Stowe village (the ski area is another 10 minutes up the road), 20 minutes from Montpelier, and 45 minutes from Burlington. Plus the beer, coffee, cheese, and ice cream mecca of Waterbury is only 20 minutes away. Come summer, the food artisans and talented crafters at the Waitsfield Farmers Market attract people from far and wide, and there are many points of access to the nearby Long Trail and Catamount Trail. The Mad River, Waterbury Reservoir, Lake Champlain and more are nearby for water sports and world class fishing. Or you can start your outdoor adventures closer to home; paths that start on the property lead all over the mountain and are great for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Bicyclists have easy access to Vermont's picturesque Route 100 and many more off-the-beaten paths, roads, and trails. We maintain an extensive collection of books, magazines, local papers, maps and handouts about sites, tours, events, hikes and restaurants you can visit/enjoy while you are here. Plus, of course, we are always happy to make suggestions. Getting Around You'll definitely need a car to get here. Winter visitors will certainly want at least front-wheel drive and snow tires. Four wheel or all wheel drive cars are best for the winter but not always needed. During Vermont's mud season (generally from mid March through early April), however, AWD or 4WD are essential. If you're willing to put up with the mess of the mud, fresh maple syrup (and sugar on snow), as well as quiet-mountain and spring season skiing definitely make a mud season trek worth the adventure. Additional Services We can arrange private, in-house massages and/or yoga classes. Extra cleaning and laundry services are available, at a fee, with 24-hour advance notice. We can also arrange to have your refrigerator stocked with fresh local delectables, including the much-sought after, #1-rated beer in the US -- Hedy Topper by the Alchemist -- which is brewed nearby and only sold in Vermont. Other Things to Note Three tiny, elderly dogs live in the main house with Bob and me. They may bark when they first see you, but they are otherwise just bundles of waggling tails and soft, hypoallergenic fur. Sorry, we are not able to accommodate any visiting pets.

The listing does not do this property justice. Although the pictures are not only accurate and beautiful, this property offers so much of a real mountain experience that you can only get by coming here! My family which consists of 2 little boys 2 and 4, had a blast playing in the snow and staying warm inside the house. Marianne is so attentive to detail and is very accessible and even checked on us before and after a winter storm to make sure we had everything we needed in case of emergencies. Overall this has been my favorite experience with any rental that we have booked. Marianne's place will be a definite yearly return as long as it is available!!!

Craig and I returned to Above the Clouds to get married!! High School First Loves reconnecting after 42 years! It was the perfect location to say our vows! Marianne and Bob were extremely helpful with helping us pull it all together! Thanks for the memories!

My husband and I couldn’t have been happier with our stay at this beautiful house. Marianne and Bob were the friendliest host that offered tons of suggestions for best places to bike/hike/shop/eat. The house is absolutely beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing. We’ve rented plenty of places to stay over the years and this was definitely the best one yet. Their attention to detail was exceptional, from the details they put into the build of the house, to the thoughtfulness of the items they have in the house for their guests. We look forward to coming back!

Marianne and Bob’s cabin was absolutely lovely and made for the perfect weekend getaway for our family of five. The house was immaculate and mountain views were absolutely breathtaking. It is situated at the top of hill and is approximately a 25 minute drive to Sugarbush for skiing. I’m sure this home makes for a wonderful retreat in any season.

We stayed at Above the Clouds II over NYE weekend and it was such a magical place. We brought our two young boys and my mom. It easily slept 5. The views were even better in person — totally spectacular. We even spotted a rainbow across the valley! It was close to Stowe Village and Waterbury and we enjoyed exploring the area, but mostly just relaxing and being outside. I'm sure it's also great in the warmer weather. Marianne and Bob are great hosts. Highly recommend! We can't wait to go back!

Marianne and Bob were extraordinary hosts - from leaving treats for us, to endeavoring to make the guest experience a luxurious and relaxing one!
Where to begin! Spa towels and robes, special bath products, a thoughtful book collection and inviting rug to curl up on next to the fire. This is a relaxing retreat with inspirational views of the mountains. The gourmet kitchen is stocked with every spice you can think of, special vinegars, coffees, teas, hot chocolate, marshmallows, and even pancake mix and local maple syrup. The bedding is of the highest quality, and waking to the sunrise view from the bed is an inspiring way to start your day.
You can truly appreciate the thought that Marianne and Bob put into the design of this space, with its warm woods, stone, natural elements, and furnishings that are aesthetically pleasing and provide a beautiful backdrop for the real star - which is the view. We hope to return!

" Above the cloud" This is exactly as described. It has very peaceful solitude with breathtaking view. You don't need to hike the mountain to see the beautiful fall foliage and sunset. Just stay at " Above the cloud" and you will see it all. The house is decorated very thoughtfully with simple and elegant way. We felt very warm and cozy like home. The host Marianne and Bob are very kindhearted couple. They go above and beyond to make sure their guests feel comfortable during the stay of their property. They treat us like friends. This place is truly a gem !! Highly recommended.

We could not have been more happy with our stay at Above the Clouds. Everything was perfect from the amazing views to the meticulously kept rooms of the home. We stayed there for our elopement, but we certainly look forward to returning in the future to enjoy the space and the surrounding mountains.
The hosts, Marianne and Bob were spectacular. Ahead of our arrival, Marianne went out of her way to provide us with tons of information about the area and answered all of our questions promptly and in great detail. During our stay, both Bob and Marianne made sure that we had everything we needed to make our stay the best possible experience.

What a fabulous place. Our stay at this unit was practically perfect. The owners have put so much thought into their unit, they went above and beyond in all the amenities as well as informing us about all the surrounding area, and you really cannot find a better view!

Above the Clouds was the perfect getaway! The house was exactly what we were hoping for. It made us feel secluded in the mountains yet close enough to town for food, necessities, etc. And the views from the how was as picturesque as described. Marianne is the ideal host and we appreciated the attention to detail throughout the house to ensure we had the ideal stay (e.g., detailed instructions, labels so you know where everything is, even leaving a crib and baby bath for our infant son). We highly recommend Above the Clouds to anybody looking for a quiet getaway.

Stunning Property, Accommodating Hosts
We loved staying in Marianne and Bob's guest home for our first family vacation with our 18 month old. Marianne and Bob helped baby-proof the place before we arrived, and provided gates to keep our toddler off the stairs. They checked-in with us daily to see if we needed anything to make our trip more enjoyable. The home is wonderfully prepared, with helpful labels and instructions, and gorgeous furnishings throughout. And the views are unbeatable! We expect to return for another trip soon!

Beautiful location with excellent hosts
The house is exactly as advertised with an amazing view over the valley with mountains in the backdrop. Bob and Marianne are genuine people who made us feel welcome and were very attentive to all the little details that make a stay so enjoyable. From the wonderful balcony to the firepit and bbq, they paid great attention to making sure we had what we needed. The only point I would highlight...the door to the bathroom is a beautiful piece of wood that has a knot hole right in front of the toilet. If all the guests are not super close, it could be a privacy issue. This is a small concern in my mind but just something to be aware of :). Overall, I highly recommend enjoying this home if you are in the area. Thanks, Bob and Marianne for the use of the home.

We absolutely loved our stay at Above the Clouds in VT. The owners, Bob and Marianne couldn't have been more helpful in providing tips for things to do, answering our questions and just being all around pleasant people, who put us completely at ease. After our trip to Above the Clouds, we felt restored, recharged and ready to face the daily grind again with renewed energy! We plan to visit again soon!

Brian and I had such a wonderful time here above the clouds. The comfort, in such a natural way, is provided with such care for the environment as well as comfort for guests. Well done Marianne and Bob! The view was breathtaking, even through the raindrops, and watching the storm roll in was an invitation to enjoy the many windows, curl up under a blanket by the fire with a cup of coffee and with each other. All of the personal touches of this retreat made me feel like I was right where I belonged. Just a really lovely place that I look forward to returning to.

Incredible stay at Above the Clouds II
We had a fantastic four days at Above the Clouds II! Words cannot describe just how beautiful this guest house is, and there is nothing like waking up each morning with a panoramic view of the Vermont mountains. Marianne was incredibly responsive, providing us with tips for swimming holes, places to eat, hikes and so on, and when we arrived, there was a complimentary bottle of wine along with snacks (cheese and chocolate!) waiting for us. The location in Moretown is perfect — close to great food and restaurants in Waitsfield and Stowe, but a quiet and lovely retreat for when we tired of being around summer crowds. Our kids (ages 13 and 10) especially enjoyed the rope hammock near the edge of the property, and picking from the raspberry and blueberry bushes along the sides of the driveway. We loved every minute of our stay, and can't wait to come back!

Hard to put into words just how amazing our stay was. First of all, the pictures do not do this space justice, the views of the green mountains at sunrise are simply stunning. The guesthouse was so cozy and clean, and the kitchen was stocked with everything we could have possibly needed. Great isolated location, but close enough to great eating, drinking and hiking in the Mad River Valley.
Marianne and Bob's attention to detail is amazing, they really thought of everything to make our stay as relaxing as possible. We constantly found our questions being answered without even having to ask, and they are quick with a recommendation for the best dining, and hiking in the area.
5/5 for location alone, but Bob & Marianne truly raise the bar for hospitality. Easily the most relaxing and stress-free trip I have ever taken. Thank you!
