We had a great stay at Ryoso Chatani. The beautiful village of Ohara is just an hour by bus from Kyoto. We were immediately warmly welcomed by the owners of the hotel. Everything was really great and very clean. The onsen was lovely too. A very relaxing stay. I would definitely recommend this stay during your trip to Japan. Many thanks to the owners who made us feel completely at home.

The couple that greeted us and provided us with traditional Japanese attire, were amazing. Breakfast was included and was very filling. Dinner was also 10/10.
The area proves a perfect representation of what rural Kyoto has to offer and more. Exploring is easy with the free bicycles provided.

It is clean, quiet, homely, comfortable and great location. Chatani San and family are so welcoming and warm. The breakfast and dinner were delicious and plenty.

This was an extremely clean and comfortable property with the most gorgeous view in the most beautiful countryside town. The staff an owners were incredibly hospitable and kind. I wish I stayed one more night.

Everything was perfect about this place. It is roughly an hour by bus from Kyoto, but it is only a short walk away from the bus stop and the views and calmness of the surroundings are precious. The Ryokan itself is not too big and very cosy. The owners speak just enough English to explain all the rules in simple words. There are cups, green tea and a thermos in the room. You can get more hot water in the shared kitchen. There is also a microwave and a refrigerator. Shared toilets are very tidy. The shared baths were a highlight of our trip. They are separated by gender and rather small, but the hot bath is fantastic. Women's changing room has face cleansers, hair brushes, hair bands, dryers etc.
Futons in the room were very comfortable.
The owners call your room to come for breakfast in the morning. Everything was delicious and we were really full afterwards. On checkout the host offered to take a picture of us next to the Ryokan.
I cannot recommend this place enough! The quality of our stay was insanely good compared to the price. Would visit again.

We loved the hospitality. The hosts are an elderly couple, they're very kind and explained to us every little detail of Japanese culture. This was our first time staying at a Ryokan and it couldn't have been any better. A caveat, the bathrooms are shared along with the shower area. We knew about Onsens but did not know that no piece of clothing are allowed inside! You have to be fully nude along with others while taking a shower so be prepared 😁
Everything was perfect!

Ryoso Chatani was the best place we stayed in during 3 weeks travel. Everything was clean, nice and comfortable, we didn’t hear neighbours (like in other ryokans), there was an onsen! and the food was incredible. The food was the best we had in Japan, breakfast and dinner were amazing. Staff take care of us very nicely and often. I am glad we stayed 4 nights. Thank you very much for everything. :)

We loved everything about it! The comfortable rooms, beautiful views, lovely yukatas and amazing food (we had both breakfast and dinner) were some highlights. Our hosts were kind and friendly, and we loved the ability to take out the free bikes and explore Ohara! The view of the valley at sunrise is fantastic. We would love to come back to Kyoto and stay at Ryoso Chatani again.

we reserved the lunch, dinner experience and it was really good to live the Japanese hot pot chicken dinner and the traditional breakfast. Communication wasn't great due to the lack of english but the owner and his wife were so kind and willing to help with everything. The location was beautiful, the moment we got there we use the bikes available to ride around the place and it was such a great nice place, with nature, no so crowded places, rivers and lot of cherry blossoms, it was a short stay but an amazing experience.
We weren't used to the 'public' baths and the scheduled to use them were only in the afternoon/night , we still not cleared about it, probably cause we weren't really able to speak clearly with the place attendees

staffs are soooo kind. It's not far from the Ohara bus station. And I strongly reccomend you add breakfast and dinner cause they will serve you a perfect one.

My Brother and I were Here for 1 night and it was very relaxing. You can get to the sights nearby by feet and this ryokan can be easily accessed cheaply by Bus.
We were lucky that we also booked Dinner and breakfast. It was the best food we Had in 2 weeks of staying in Japan and the price was more then fair.

Authentic, wonderful ryokan. Proprietor always very helpful and solicitous. Comfortable rooms, and the bath is amazing.
More variety for dinner, especially for vegetarians. Location is great if you want quiet and isolation, but expensive to go to Kyoto and back by taxi.

The hotel is surrounded with mountains and rivers which is enjoyable. The owner is really nice and even serviced me a can coffee when I left.
Nothing to complain. It's totally out of my exception.

This place was recommended to me by a tourist I met by chance. They said it was a highlight of their trip and it was for me as well. The area is peaceful and feels remote while still being a short bus ride from Kyoto. The staff were so friendly and good at communicating with English. The value for money is hard to beat. I enjoyed both the setting for meals and the meals themselves. Definitely make use of the free bicycles and go for a ride to one of the shrines nearby.
Just know it’s a shared bathroom (separated by gender), but the bathroom is clean and the place wasn’t so busy that I really had to share it (this was in November, maybe it’s different in spring).

What a perfect place to stay in a beautiful location. The owners were wonderful and everything was clean and comfortable. They had all the amenities you might need in the bath area, and the massage chair was a nice touch. I highly recommend having their dinner and breakfast which were amazing! We will definitely stay again the next time we are in the area.
The traditional style pillows may be difficult for some foreigners to get used to, but that is part of the charm.
