About this condo rental
Lions Gate Getaway is a private studio apartment in a lush, tropical setting, humming birds share your 270 degree view of St. John, Tortola and Red Hook Harbor. In just a few minutes you can walk into Red Hook for shopping, dinner, drinks and night life or catch the ferries to St. John and the BVI. The spacious porch is a perfect way to enjoy your first cup of coffee or to sit back in the evening and watch the colors change over the islands with a cool beverage in your hand as the breeze passes by. My husband Chris and I have lived on St. Thomas for over 20 years. He came to dive, I came to sail. We met and discovered we both had a love of the water and the Caribbean life style. Chris built this house on the top of the hill, and now we have expanded it to accommodate guests in our apartment that captures the Caribbean life style. Beautiful Apartment with overlook of Redhook and Saint Johns. Very appealing decorations/plants. Steep/narrow road to location from Red Hook. Just take your time, stay left and you can make it there safely and it's worth it. Affordable, good wifi and comfortable accommodations. Flowers and chocolates for my wife for anniversary were some of the best I've ever had arranged by locations for our yearly trip! May do again, but we do like to have variety of places we go, we'll see... Thanks Max and Chris!

Max was great and the area was in a nice location. The driveway is a bit daunting at first, but not bad once you acclimate. The mosquitoes and other biting bugs were rough, but that’s just the Island in October. Amazing views.

Words cannot express how beautiful the veiws, and the room/property is. It was wonderful to be so close to town and have the privacy of being tucked away.
Chris and Maxine are wonderful hosts. They are so welcoming and giving us some great ideas to adventure around. I would definitely come back in the future.

My husband and I stayed in Red Hook with plans to ferry to St John and hike/beach during the day. This place was a short, less than 10 minute walk to the ferry, which was great because we went the week without a car!
Maxine was so understanding and flexible throughout our entire booking process as we had a hiccup with our dates when booking. She was friendly and helpful whenever we spoke with her, but also gave us our space so we felt like we had the property all to ourselves (besides frequent visits from Lou, the dog, which we LOVED and looked forward to!!)
When I say I was obsessed with everything about this cute little rental, it was my favorite part of our trip! The balcony is to die for, the interior so sweetly decorated, you feel like you are a local living on the island with an amazing view. The kitchen had whatever we needed to make a dinner or two.
Overall, we can’t wait to come back!! Thank you both for an amazing stay :)

Max and Chris are awesome hosts. The property has the best views in Red Hook. I loved everything about it. It was clean, spacious, and even came with a dog! Louie hung out on the porch with us while we ate breakfast in the morning. It was perfect. I would stay again. The climb up isn't for the weak, though. Get your quads ready for it. But, the view is worth it.

Maxine and Chris were very hospitable. They picked us up down the hill and dropped us off. They also let us checked in early. The view from their place was amazing!! We can’t get enough of it. The studio was well equipped and had everything you need for your stay. We would definitely come back if they would have us again.

Great location and view. First drive up and down the driveway was nerve-racking, but you get used to it. Some mosquitoes that loved the area post-showers, but nothing some repellent can’t fix. The shower was really cool with the stone finish and plants. I even saw a baby lizard! Definitely recommend if you prefer scenic views, waking up to the sound of nature, and a lot of privacy.

I stayed in the apartment for 14 days while taking some captains classes in St Thomas. During my stay, Maxine and Chris were very hospitable. They invited me for dinner a few times, and we shared many interesting stories. I would highly recommend staying here.

Best stay with best hosts
Staying with Max was amazing! The apartment has the most beautiful views, it's cozy, and Max and Chris were so helpful and hopsitable. It was the perfect size for two people and we loved hanging out on the patio to watch the sun set and boats come in. It's so close to everything in Red Hook as well which makes going out at night very nice. I highly recommend staying here!

Very Casual and Comfortable for a Relaxing Stay

On top of picking us up from the bottom of the hill on the first day, he also picked us up from the grocery store, offered up great advice on boating and snorkeling, and shared stories and pleasantries over a beer a couple of nights. Louie, the dog, was also a great host and breakfast mate. There’s not much more to say that hasn’t already been said in other reviews. Everything is extremely accurate and you won’t regret a stay here. Thanks Chris and Maxine, we look forward to returning to Lion’s Gate on our next trip!

We had an amazing time staying at Max & Chris's home!! The view from the house is so much better in person, we had breakfast on the porch every morning because of how beautiful it was. The living space has a bed, full stocked kitchen and bathroom which was just enough for the 2 of us. The house is on top of a very steep hill so I would definitely recommend a car. Max & Chris are very accommodating, they drove us down the hill several times before we got our car and got us everything we needed. we had a lot of mosquito issues since we arrived on a rainy day, so I would bring a good mosquito repellent. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay and would love to stay here again.

It was a quick walk down the hill to lots of food options (if you like ribs, you have to get some from the Love Shack) and to the ferry to get over to St. John. There were plenty of taxis around if you need to get to other parts of the island or back up the hill. We would walk down the hill in the morning and then find a cab to bring us back up at the end of the day because the hill is very steep and quite an adventure after a long day of exploring the ocean and islands. Most of the taxis in the area were too large to get up the hill and be able to turn around, but if they were too large, they would call a smaller one to take you up. All in all, it was a great 4 days spent with Max and Chris being very accommodating.

Beautiful property and owners were great with communication. We did not rent a car so getting up the hill is a hike but so worth the views. Located right in red hook with many nearby amenities including the ferry to St. John. Loved the owners dog Louie! Overall would recommend to others and would stay here again.

We enjoyed our stay, and Maxine and Chris are wonderful host. I would recommend this studio for any couple looking for a place at St.Thomas. Views are amazing from the deck, and beaches and restaurants very close.

This property is STUNNING! What a lovely and charming place! Max and Chris were fantastic hosts! Very sweet and welcoming and easy to communicate with. My husband and I had a magical time reliving our honeymoon from 6 years ago. We played cards, listened to music and ate dinner nightly on our patio. Hiked and snorkeled all week, and took two sail trips on the Nightwind II (highly recommend). We will 1000% be back! Thank you Max, Chris and Louie for sharing your home with us!

The entire experience at Lion’s Gate was wonderful! The hosts are so kind and easy to get in touch with (they live upstairs from the rental.) The place looks just like the photos and has incredible views of the bay. The only drawback is location at the top of a steep hill, walking it is a workout and the taxi drivers have a hard time accessing it as well.
We had a great time and would highly recommend this rental.

St. Thomas Red Hook apartment
Nice trip to St. Thomas. The location is just up the hill in the Red Hook area, and a right around the corner from the St. John ferry, so getting a taxi is no problem. The owners are very nice and the property was clean and had INCREDIBLE VIEWS!!!!

Spectacular Views
Great property with magnificent views over the top of Red Hook. The property owners are great to work with. Our second stay here & my wife says the hill has gotten steeper since the last time, no issue as we drove up most of the time. Booked later this year for a few days before we head over to St John. Perfect location.

Quaint space with a great view!
The property manager communicated well with us as soon as we booked. She also lives right above this property, so if you need anything, she’s readily available.
The view is great, and the walk to red hook is relatively quick (just be prepared for the walk back up). The property is gated, so we felt very safe.
The property has everything you’ll need if you want to get groceries and eat in. But if you want to eat out, there are several places to eat in walking distance. Taxis are easy to get too once down the hill (by Agave).
Our favorite part was sitting out on the porch for sunrise/breakfast, and enjoying wine/cocktails on the porch as the sun went down.
The bathroom/shower was very well designed as well. We loved it.

Serious cleaning needed
Place needs a serious cleaning, and owner should be spraying regularly for mosquitos esp. w/ possiblity of zika/dengue & ching. mosq. viruses. Owners were gone most days and never saw any cleaning maint. being done... just in rentals for some needed funds.. even car was dirty when they picked you up. There water shortage (only rain) explains why the cleaning is so bad and dog hairs

Paradise in Red Hook
My wife and I just returned from a wonderful trip to St Thomas and Maxine’s beautiful apt. It was very well appointed with a gorgeous bathroom, full kitchen and a view to die for. Red Hook was a perfect location for enjoying great dining and nightlife, shops and the ferry to St John. We would highly recommend staying here on your visit to St Thomas.
