Superb
Super lovely staff who took the time to help me figure out restaurants and also went the extra mile when my bus was cancelled due to monsoon in all of kyushu, informing me and helping me figure out what my options were. We decided together what my best option for bus was. He was so lovely and drove me to the busstop as well. The girl was super nice as well :) Great room with nice view, gorgeous yukata choice ready for me.... solid onsen, in the center of everything or just on the edge of it.

Lovely stay in Kurokawa Onsen!
Great staff and service during the entire duration of our stay. The hotel provided pick up and drop-off service from the bus stop which was very kind. They even went out of their way to help us retrieve a phone that was left on the bus. The room was clean and the meal was full of different Kumamoto delicacies so we could try a bit of everything. The hotel was very responsive with communication and seemed to have a tattoo-friendly approach for their onsen.
Overall the stay was really nice. Some small things about meals - the makeshift rooms we were in were fine but the walls were super thin. There were some louder guests next to us and it felt like we were a part of their meal. It would be nice if there was a better space for meals with more separation between tables or better walls. Additionally, the wagyu for dinner was very tender, but I wish there was a simple sea salt or other dipping sauce for it as I felt the miso sauce overwhelmed the taste of the meat.

Exceptional
So kindly warm welcome from staffs. Onsen and room is impressed. Good time memories here.
The entrance road is very narrow. In hotel have no lift. Spiral stair is hard to carry big bag.

As expected from Ryokan, staff are beyond great. Place is a bit further up the hill but the view is nice. Nice Onsen too. Cheaper than the rest as well.

Fantastic ryokan near the centre of Kurokawa. Worth the money to visit this lovely location.
The property is so much nicer in person than we were expecting. Everything is spotless and the staff were very friendly. We mostly spoke in Japanese to the reception so not sure about English availability but they provided a map of Kurokawa and gave us some recommendations for Vegan food during our stay. Our room was enormous and had a huge bedroom, two closets, toilet, sink area and an outside corridor with a fridge. We booked a private bath in one of the hotel Onsen in the evening. This was very nice but the bath was a more sulfuric water than I personally liked. This was more of a personal preference so not a negative on the hotel, in the future it would be best to check the water type before bathing. Location is good, it is 5 minutes walk from the centre of Kurokawa up a big hill. The snow made the walk a little treacherous but we happened to go during the worst snow in a long time! Additionally, a shuttle bus was offered to take guests from the Ryokan to the bus stop for a return trip to Fukuoka. We didn't take this option when we left but it was clearly offered and even had the choice to just shuttle our bags to the bus stop so we could walk around town without them. We did not have a meal at the Ryokan. I am vegetarian and my partner is Vegan so we needed to find a restaurant that could meat our needs (Tofu Kissho in Kurokawa made us a great Vegan friendly meal). I was initially hesitant about the price of the Ryokan in Kurokawa. We paid around £190 for a night and I thought that was a bit pricey before arriving. However, Kurokawa is amazing and I consider the relatively high cost as a way of subsidising this amazing place to continue operating. This was one of the stand out moments on our trip and I went from being sceptical about Ryokan and Onsen to being fully converted by the end of our stay.
It would have been nice to have some Vegan options at the Ryokan. Even if it was a simple rice and miso soup we would have appreciated that. Japan is relatively new to Vegan food compared to the UK, so we went in with the expectation that this wouldn't be possible everywhere. However, having some options in the future would make our stay more comfortable, particularly for breakfast.

Superb
Staff were amazing, free pick up and drop from the bus stop and free pineapple water
Up a small hill compared to the more central ones, certainly not as far as those on the outskirts though

Worth every cent
Wonderful room and extremely comfortable futons. The dinner and breakfast was delicious with variety of flavours, textures and ingredients. Personal favourite was the steamed egg. Onsen itself was large and peaceful away from the main road with only noise of nature. Staff knew both English and Chinese, and was more than helpful offering free shuttle to the bus stop.
Nothing.
