Log Cabin Cottage: Dog Friendly, Very Rustic, 200ft from the Water's Edge ↟↟↟
About this cottage rental
Robertson’s Cottages are nestled on a slender, tree-laden peninsula called Idlewild. Off the beaten path, at the end of a quiet dead-end road, our family has welcomed guests since the 1930s. We genuinely appreciate your interest in staying in one of our several individual and unique cottages filled with the modest comforts and serenity a body, mind and spirit needs. This listing is for Log Cabin, a genuine and historic log cabin nestled in the Idlewild woods just 200 feet from the shoreline of Sawyer Harbor. This use to be the Yount family summer residence and is the most cozy and homey of all the cottages at Robertson's. In Log Cabin you will find a warm and inviting living room centered around a Door County limestone fireplace, a quaint bathroom with a clawfoot tub and shower, a fully furnished kitchen finished in all natural cedar planking...adding the sweetest old time rustic touch, a bright sun room with a full size bed and bunk beds, and on the south side of the cottage a private bedroom with a queen bed and views of the wooded surroundings. Connected to the kitchen sits a large, airy screened in porch fitting for morning waffles, afternoon checker tournaments or evening entertainment and fellowship. Guests of Robertson’s Cottages have access to our spacious permanent pier (8ft x 120ft), protected moorings with finger piers, boat slips, a canoe, row boats, two paddle boards, life jackets, communal fire pit, laundry room, library, sauna, play structure with two swings and a slide, picnic tables, tether ball, safe sandy beach, swim raft, charcoal grills and free, turtle's pace, wavering wireless internet (realistically, you may not be able to binge watch your favorite series on Netflix or participate in online gaming while staying at Robertson’s, BUT you should be able to check emails and post your Door County sunset photo on social media!). ↟↟↟ Idlewild is located at the juncture of the waters of Green Bay, Sturgeon Bay and Sawyer Harbor. The rejuvenating scent of the forest, the pristine waters and the closeness with nature makes it easy to take a break from the cares you left behind. Directly across the harbor from Robertson’s you will see the steep, densely wooded bluff of Potawatomi State Park. The 1,225 acre sanctuary is perfect for bicycling, bird watching, hiking, observing native Door County flora and fauna, picking wild berries in season and picnicking. The park is open year round from 6am-11pm. As nature changes the landscape in the spring, the woods become blanketed with white trillium. Life unearths gradually and proceeds swiftly this time of year in Idlewild. Nearby apple and cherry orchards bloom in late May and walleye fishermen quietly troll the harbor every night. With over 200ft of shoreline, a historical and spacious permanent pier (8ft x 120ft), and protected moorings with finger piers and boat slips, Robertson’s is a gem of a place for boat, fishing and nature lovers alike. In autumn, the view across the protected water of Sawyer Harbor is spectacular. One can observe the slowly changing panorama of colors and feel the refreshingly crisp fall air settle deeply in your lungs. The fresh, sun-warmed days and water-cooled nights are sure to make you feel stronger in body and soul. If activity is what you enjoy, there is a challenging eighteen hole golf course located at the entrance to Idlewild. You may also have interest in a day trip to the more populated areas of the county where you may indulge in village shopping, delight in local festivals, or flavor locally crafted beer or wine at one of the various craft breweries and wineries. One of our personal favorite activities, perfect for any age, is embarking on an afternoon adventure up the peninsula for a picnic and evening musical at Northern Sky Theater located in Peninsula State Park. Their incredible outdoor venue and all original productions are sure to fill your hearts with joy and wonder. Whether you are bicycling the winding, wooded, back country roads, taking an invigorating morning meander or cozy sundown voyage by boat to nearby historic Sherwood Point Lighthouse, or are curled up with a favorite book on the dock or in front of the fireplace, the closeness with nature and time spent with your closest loved ones at Robertson’s Cottages at Idlewild will leave a genuine and lasting impression in your hearts. Long time visitors and passing through vacationers alike are regularly heard describing Robertson’s as their ‘happy place’, their ‘home in Idlewild’ or, ‘a little slice of heaven on earth’...that being said, we would like to take this opportunity to be clear and direct about the practical details and realities of life at Robertson’s Cottages at Idlewild. We are new to managing this property for our family and we appreciate your unconditional understanding as we attentively and heartily navigate the ins, outs, ups and downs of anything and everything that arises with(in) these remarkable, rustic and vintage (OLD) cottages. Sometimes the sink drips and sometimes the shower leaks. There are leftover rust stains in the claw foot tubs from generations of use and the vintage bed frames tend to wobble. The fireplaces and wood stoves are decades old, time tested and insurance approved. Be weary of the wind and green wood sold. Smoke MAY enter your cottage when in use - if so give the 'cracking an ol' window trick' a try to see if that helps. We do not provide firewood, bed sheets, pillow covers, bath towels, beach towels, toiletries, hair dryers, cable television or pantry items other than salt & pepper. Not a single one of our cottages available includes air conditioning. All of the cottages feature ‘almost’ all original windows to finagle open, a rejuvenating harbor breeze and a few beloved fans to push the midsummer air around on the most humid nights. Traditionally, this area is known as “Nature’s Air Conditioned Vacationland”...but if it's sweaty o'clock and you have reached a point of physical, mental or emotional discomfort, we highly recommend a good ol’ fashioned dip in the lake. Nothing soothes a sweaty body or nurtures an inner child more than jumping off the end of the dock! The wilderness is right outside and all around us. A stay in Idlewild means experiencing nearly the full spectrum of the natural world. Animals of Idlewild you may encounter during your stay include, but certainly aren't limited to, black squirrels, flying squirrels, red squirrels, regular (grey) squirrels, bats, Bubba (Robertson’s resident Bulldog), bunnies, chipmunks, deer, foxes, muskrats, mice, opossums, porcupines, raccoons, skunks and woodchucks...not to mention a PLETHORA of native and migrating birds, a variety of scaly slithery friends (who at times choose slither swimming as a means of transportation from one destination to the next) and bugs. Bugs have zero restrictions in Idlewild. Occasionally you may find a spider in the shower, experience the delightful buzz of a mosquito near your ear, or meet our little friends the gnats who are known for squeaking through screens in the evenings if lights are left on. As you mentally prepare for a stay at Robertson’s, taking a moment to visualize this experience as ‘camping’ in conjunction with the MODEST amenities of a charcoal grill, coffee maker, refrigerator, stove and oven, cookware, tableware, microwave, mattress, pillows, extra blankets, a VERY small television and DVD player, flush toilets, warm showers, walls and a roof over your head, we feel you will have a memorable experience. If you’re looking for a refined, air conditioned, materially pristine and virtually bugless place to vacation, we fully honor that desire and sincerely support your decision to choose accommodations with one of the many facilities available in Sturgeon Bay. We feel a stay at Robertson’s Cottages truly all comes back to those looking to reconnect to a simpler time, a time before all things instant and wireless...an uninterrupted, slower time, deeply rooted in all things natural and nostalgic. *PLEASE READ* Pre Season (Beginning of May - June 20), Peak Season (June 20 - August 22) & Post Season (August 22 - End of October) There is a two night minimum stay for all Pre and Post Season dates. Over Memorial Day Weekend, Labor Day Weekend and Columbus Day Weekend there is a three night minimum stay requirement. During Peak Season there is a minimum 7 night stay requirement, arriving on Saturday and leaving the following Saturday. Please Bring: Bed sheets, pillow covers, bath and hand towels, beach towels, toiletries, hair dryer, and pantry items. Pet Policy: Dogs are warmly welcomed guests at Robertson’s. There is a per night per pet fee. Small orange shovels are located around the property for cleaning up after your pet. When leaving a pet unattended in a cottage we ask that you make arrangements to check in on them for their safety and to avoid damages to the cottages. If you would like furniture coverings for your pet(s) please do not hesitate to ask! We are more than happy to supply you with some! Boat Mooring: There is a per night per boat fee. We are able to guarantee one boat slip per cottage-typically more are available. If you are bringing a boat please let us know when reserving so we may add the boat slip fee to your total. Extra Guests: Each Cottage is set up to comfortably sleep up to 6 people. There is a charge per extra guest over 6 guests (of any age) per night, up to 8 guests per cottage. We really enjoyed our stay. Classic cabin set perfectly on the lakeshore, this was a perfect place for peeping fall colors.

Walked in and walked right out. This building has not been up kept for years and pictures do not match present conditions. Hole in front door where mice have chewed through, broken windows, exterior of building is rotting out. Just an all around dive. Tried to contact owner 3 times the evening we got there with no response. Completely unsatisfactory.

Property owner was caring and accommodating! It was a little more rustic then expected but it worked!

My boyfriend and I stayed in the Log Cabin over Labor Day weekend to celebrate his birthday and it couldn’t have been better! John was prompt in communications and even stopped by to say hello and inquire about our needs on the property. We vacationed on a holiday weekend but still felt like we had a little oasis of quiet to enjoy the busy weekend. There was plenty of outdoor space to enjoy and activities to entertain us! The perfect spot for unplugging :)

the location is great.. that is the real only positive comment...there is a reason pictures of the bathroom are not shown, super small. Kitchen stove & counters were dirty. Front room had huge hole in the door- could see outside- had to put something in it to make sure nothing could get in the cabin- but still had a couple small visitors- my son seen. Both windows were broken in main bedroom- I was afraid to touch/close- worried about broken glass.3 season room- had big holes in the ceiling, big enough for critters to coming in. Thank goodness I brought all my own bedding and pillows.

Good but could use some upgrades. Over all it was fun and John is a great host. Definitely come back.

Very nice place close to the water. John was very helpful.
We traveled with a dog, dogs are welcome to all of the property even on the beach.
We like this place and will return.

When my friends and us arrived the original cabin we reserved was in complete shambles. The window was out of the door, the florrs and furniture were covered in leaves and debre. There were electrical and plumbing stuff all over the cabinets. The porch wasn't even swept off or cleaned. The owner failes to tell us the cabin we rented was out of commission a month prior to our reservation. 38 minutes bwfore arrival I got a text message saying he moves us to a better cabin. The water was undeniable, there was no indication we had to bring our own sheets and pillow cases. The cabin was full of ants and there was a community fire pit. We paid 400+ dollars for a cabin that the pictures we out of date and the owner recommended we all take a shower in the sweet lodge... He has beautiful property and if he would put effort and the money he makes off his rentals he could make it into a a beautiful place to be at. Also beware of the peer. My dogs loves it and the owner was very friendly but he needed to be more upfront about the property's being rented and the conditions.

My husband and I walked in the door and our jaws dropped. Super run down dingy place. The doors barely locked and the main glass to the back door was barely attached. Didn't feel safe leaving our stuff inside. The beds were gross as was the bathroom. Not to mention not enough pressure to shower if we wanted to. The main heat source was a plug in heater. We were so disgusted so left after 1 night. We were supposed to be there for 3. Book a place in sisters bay instead. Would 100% never recommend any of these cabins to anyone!

The cabin was not clean. Cobwebs and years of dust and dirt. Tiles missing from bathroom floor. Appliances that barely worked. Coffee maker with a cracked carafe. Loud refrigerator and a screen porch with screens missing and unusable unless you are okay with sharing it with squirrels. Front porch not safe to walk on. Rotting boards. No privacy due to missing blinds on sun porch. Renter beware!

We chose to not finish our stay because we did not feel the place was clean. We did not feel very safe because the windows were not covered properly by the blinds. The kids bunk bed was right in front of the window with no coverings. The door barely locked. There was spiders and bugs everywhere. Granted I know the cabin is in the woods however; there was spider webs on the light fixtures and all over the cabin as if it hasn’t been detailed cleaned in a long time. I can appreciate the history and age of a place but it doesn’t have to be dirty. We didn’t cook or shower as we did not feel it was a clean enough environment to do such things.

Quaint
Great place to lay our heads at night. Place is very small.

The cabin was comfortable. Do wish that more than one lopsided burner worked on the cook top. Owners provided a stand alone hot plate. Still inconvenient for preparing a meal. We would have really appreciated working blinds or curtains in the bedroom. Privacy was at a minimum. Cabins are situated close together. Not a bad stay, could have been better. Will not return.

We had a great time staying in the cabin. We were able to fish early morning off the dock. We went on several hikes at the nearby Potawatomi State Park. We were even able to get in some stargazing at night from the grounds. The cabin was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed for our short weekend get away. The hosts were kind and informative. Will stay again!

We are always looking for places with history and this place has 4 generations and going strong. Rebecca and Andy were attentive and generous (sent them a text about borrowing a backpack and Andy was knocking at the back door in 5 min) while hardly making their presence felt during our 3 day stay. Their lake access is both serene and active with lots of water toys to borrow and a welcoming sandy beach. Our cabin was clean and cozy with the perfect rustic log cabin feeling we love. We hope to be back soon.

This property was just what it was listed. There is some fixing to do, if that’s what you want to look at. There is so much more going on here. It is so peaceful and the nights are quiet. You can’t see the water from the cabin but it is a very short walk to get your feet wet. I felt comfortable and relaxed.

Rustic, dog-friendly quiet place
I stayed here on short notice after my camper van had engine trouble and I could not go camping. This was the next better thing to camping. A comfortable bed, clean bathroom, and no setting up the screen tent. My dog loved the beach area and we walked the quiet rural roads each day. The bar/grill down the road had the outdoor patio area closed because of falling acorns! Rural wonderfulness right there. Quaint, friendly, and days that remind you of what unpretentious really means. Not for everyone, but for those of us who love the outdoors and adventures of all kinds, it's like going back in time, to when you were a kid and going to your grandparent's place.

Rustic Retreat
Access to the lake was great. The cabin is rustic, as described. This was a great place to unwind and get away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sturgeon Bay and Egg Harbor are great little towns. We found several good restaurant options, including The Spoon and Kitty O’Reilleys. We also grilled at the cabin. The screened in porch was an excellent place to put together a puzzle. We used the fireplace since the weather was cold and it was fantastic. Also explores Potawatomi State Park just across the bay. Great place to kayak and fish too.

Cabin is vry rustic, but clean inside. The outside appearance is a little rough.
Location was great, owners and fellow renters were all wonderful. Most renters brought their dogs, (which we love!) Very relaxed family atmosphere. Cabin is rustic, but clean and the beds were very comfortable. Super peaceful and quiet!

Step back in time
Review is accurate so if you are looking for upscale this is not it. We really enjoyed unplugging from our fast paced lives and chilling at this cabin.
The cabin had everything we needed including a great screened in porch to eat dinner and have coffee in without the mosquitos. We docked our boat and brought our dog which that alone is worth every penny!
The bay can be rough and it can also be calm and we took advantage of the fishing, swimming and canoeing. The body of water is beautiful and driven past by all the DC people looking for the shops etc. We were enjoying the peace especially with covid and staying away from mass groupings of people.
If you are a runner this is also a great location. The 5 mile route to the Potawatami tower (that is closed to climbing due to safety) one way is enjoyable. The run along the main road can be hot and dangerous but if you move to the seen parts of the road along curves you'll be fine. Once you get to the top of the road that passes the cemetery and the golf course entrance you go right on into a bug free serene trail to the main road into the park. No cars, no anyone really. You'll pass the Ice age lookout if you go left at the road looking over the bay. Really my highlight to our stay since it's hard to get in good distance running while allowing my family to fish unless its highway running. You can keep going past the tower and go all the way to the boat launch. That's 6.1 miles from the cabin. Thats a major incline but if you want training that will give it to you.
Of course you can bike this too.
Back to the cabin, quick response from Andrew and really enjoyed our stay. Also enjoyed getting food from Johnny's G's fishing hole within walking distance. Bring cash-no cc. The boat launch is across the street for Johnny G's-free. Both so close to the property.
thanks again!

Exactly as expected
The description was spot on. We spent a week in this quaint cabin and thoroughly enjoyed getting away to swim, kayak, SUP, fish, read and play games as a family.
The location was off the beaten path, but close enough to hit all of the highlights of Door County. The hosts were accommodating and present if needed.
