Quiet year round lake home, swimming\/fishing, near Pictured Rocks, trail access
About this cottage rental
Our home away from home is a spacious, 1700 square foot, fully furnished get away in the beautiful upper peninsula of Michigan. We are located on scenic H-58 roughly halfway between Munising and Grand Marais, and are just minutes from the Pictured Rocks National lake shore where you will find numerous hiking trails, waterfalls, and Lake Superior beaches to explore. Additionally, we are less than a mile from a network of trail systems that allow you to go in all 4 directions. Whether you're a snowmobiler, or ride side by sides/ATV's, you have endless options for exploration right from home base, with plenty of parking available for large trailers. If you want a break from the sight seeing, enjoy an afternoon or evening sitting lakeside at the house. We offer over 300 feet of frontage along the north side of Nevins Lake, that includes a sandy beach area/fishing dock. This 276-acre lake has no public access, allowing for a quiet and peaceful experience. It's not uncommon for a whole summer day to pass without seeing any motorized watercraft, which creates opportunities to observe wildlife such as loons, eagles, and beavers in their natural environment. Nevins Lake is great for fishing/swimming, or paddling/exploring, and provides a wonderful opportunity to escape and unwind. While there's no public access, small boats on trailers can be backed down to the water and launched from our beach area (A vehicle with 4-wheel drive is recommended). We provide 4 Kayaks, a canoe, a paddle boat, and a row boat that are included with your rental as well. In the evening, unwind around a bon-fire (firewood included!). Roast brats or smores while listening to the beautiful calls of loons ushering in a night sky that only the remote UP can offer. The cabin itself has all the amenities that allow for a comfortable/contemporary stay in a remote location. Ideal for couples, families, or groups of friends, it comfortably sleeps 4-6 adults. The house includes a fully stocked kitchen with all the items you’ll need to prepare and serve a home cooked meal. There is reliable high speed internet, as well as Satellite TV. A short 25-minute drive West from Nevins Lake will bring you to the amazing town of Munising; the same distance in the opposite direction will bring you to Grand Marais. Nestled between these 2 towns along H-58 are dozens of points of interest, including Lake Superior beaches, hiking trails, and waterfalls. Here are a few resources to help plan your itinerary- - 17 amazing waterfalls- https://www.munising.org/attractions/waterfalls/ - Pictured rocks hiking trails- https://www.munising.org/recreation/hiking/ - Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore- https://www.munising.org/pictured-rocks/ - Lake Superior beaches- https://www.munising.org/recreation/beaches/ Every season has countless unique and exciting experiences to be had. Summertime is a given, and there are plenty of reasons why. However, the best kept secrets are in the "off months" when the crowds dissipate. Many consider September/October to be the best months to visit the UP. Fall colors are unrivaled in the Hiawatha national forest areas, and paint the landscape on the elevated shores of Nevins Lake. We look forward to being your host and helping to make your UP experience great no matter the season! *****IMPORTANT NOTE**** Due to the remote location, trash service is not provided and guests are asked to take their trash with them. Many renters choose to dispose smaller amounts on their day trips throughout the stay. Otherwise, there are 2 good options while heading home as well. Going West towards Munising, there is Wood Island Waste Management that accepts bagged trash. If you are heading East, Seney has a gas Station/convenience store called Maters Stop & Go. They charge a couple dollars a bag to dispose in their dumpster. We apologize in advance for this inconvenience, and appreciate your understanding.

This was a great location for a weekend snowmobile trip with the guys. There was plenty of room for four grown men to sleep comfortably, with beds to spare. We would definitely stay again.

The cabin and its location were both great and made for a perfect stay for couples, or would be a great place to bring your family. The property was very conveniently located to many great attractions, yet very quiet and peaceful at night. The owners were great to deal with, provided good insight on things to do and see, and made for a very nice stay. We would definitely come back.

We loved staying here, the environment and lake were perfect.

We enjoyed a relaxing, multigenerational family vacation at this home on Lake Nevins. The property is relatively flat which allowed the older people in our group to easily access the dock.
The owners were great to work with and responded quickly to all our questions prior to and during the week long trip. Nick and Jill demonstrated a lot of flexibility for our larger group so that we could all stay on the property together. They were great hosts!!
We brought in a fishing boat, but equally enjoyed fishing off of the dock. We cooked most meals at the cabin and spent the evenings enjoying the fire.
The house was sufficiently stocked for our needs, with plenty of kitchen tools and bath towels.
The only thing to make note of for planning is that there is no trash pickup (due to remote location) and, every day, we had to go and find places to drop off the trash we generated (we had a large group). We often paid about $4-$5 per trash bag.
If you need to buy provisions for your stay, the nearest full grocery store is about 35 minutes away, but you can buy ice and beverages within 15-20 minutes.
There are plenty of sites and activities in the area, which kept us entertained throughout the week.
I recommend this property for a relaxing vacation in the Upper Peninsula!

This was a great private location. The lake was perfect and the kayaks, paddle boat and canoe available were used by our family often! The house have plenty of beds, a full kitchen and met our basic needs. Also, the communication with the owner was great and I knew I could contact them at anytime.
Now what wasn’t great……there were several things that would have been much nicer with a little effort. For example, there were tall weeds all over that needed to be trimmed or sprayed, there were several loose patio blocks on the top level that my 6 year old actually fell because of, one of the patio chairs was held together with zip ties, etc. The worst part was my 6 year old was so excited to sleep in the loft, but after climbing up there, we found one corner of the room covered in mouse (or some other small rodent) poop. It clearly hasn’t been vacuumed in awhile. Also, there were ants everywhere, although bugs like that have to be expected to an extent. Lastly, having to haul your own garbage to the dump was extremely inconvenient. Surely, the cleaning staff or owners can build that into their pricing and take care of it.
Overall, the area was beautiful, and we really enjoyed exploring, kayaking, etc. however, we will not be using this property again if we ever return. While it met our basic needs, I expected a lot more effort for the amount of money we were charged

Great lakeside cabin. Loved how clean and well stocked the cabin was and the size. Great Wi-Fi. Perfect location for solitude, nearby hiking trails we wanted to go on, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and rock hunting in Grand Marais. Loved the kayaks, canoe, and paddle boat available on the property for going out on the peaceful lake, and the firepit with firewood. Did find a mouse inside on the first day but we were able to scare it off and never saw it again.

Great place to stay if visiting pictured rocks. House is SUPER cool with every amenity you could want in the U.P.

We rented this spot as a family getaway for a deserving employee. The property was perfect for her little family and they had a great time swimming, fishing, seeing the sites. The owners were helpful and informative. All around positive experience!

The property is perfectly located between Munising and Grand Marais. Adventures to be had hiking trails, going to waterfalls, visiting beaches and seeing a lighthouse. Good local restaurant choices at both "cities", but we far preferred Munising. The kayaks and canoe at the cabin and the lake provided entertainment without having to drive anywhere. Great to unplug the devices and reconnect as a family. The cabin was well stocked with everything we needed and the owners had excellent communication. The only downside was the mosquitos! We expected bugs and such while out and about, but when we came back to the cabin, we anticipated being able to shut them out. Somehow they kept getting in, which made sleeping and relaxing at the cabin very difficult. My husband killed 23 mosquitos in less than an hour one morning while eating breakfast in the recliners by the back door overlooking the lake. Would definitely visit here again, but not in the summer!

We planned this little get away with our family to do some hiking. We enjoyed exploring all the trails and the beauty of Pictured Rocks. We loved the location of the cabin and having access to the kayaks and paddle boat. The hosts were wonderful!!!

This property was perfect for our family of 6! We enjoyed the paddle boat, camp fires and cooking on the grill! I would definitely recommend this cabin to any family!

The property was in a beautiful location where relaxation was easy. The property was well equipped with everything we needed. The mosquito season had just begun and it is real. Come equipped with netting in addition to bug spray if coming in the early summer.

This was our 7th year coming to the U.P. to trail ride and fish and this was, by far, our best home rental. Great setting, well-built home, very attentive hosts and a cozy atmosphere. Under a mile from Adam’s Trail and is right off of HWY58.

Jill and the cottage met every expectation. Lakeside peace and quiet were outstanding. We live in a noisy suburban environment so it was such a balm to the spirits to be here. We loved hearing the wind blow through the pines while sitting on the lawn, gazing out at the lake. Heard and saw two loons on the water; hummingbird, black-throated green warblers, and cedar waxwings in the yard. And of course, enjoyed the trails and beaches of the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore. This place would be hard to beat!

U.P. Launch Pad
We originally planned to come from the East but the grocery store in Newbury was closed by the time we arrived so coming in from Munising (West) later in the evening we attempted to follow Jill’s instructions - resetting mileage at 115 traveling about 26 miles on 58 ended up overshooting the driveway/road to the cottage by 10 miles. Once we turned around and found Adam’s trail coming from the East the instructions were accurate and we arrived. Take a good map showing Nevins Lake. The cottage had plenty of room for our family of five. We ended up slightly barricading the landing area in the master loft area due to the lower ledge and concerns are kids would climb over somehow but wasn’t a huge deal. A stepping stool would have been nice to have in the bathroom for our kids. We managed to experience much of what we sought out to do. Kitch-ipi -tipi, Oswald’s bear ranch, renting a boat to explore Pictured Rocks, hiked to the shipwrecks near Au Sable light station, wading in the hurricane River, spent an afternoon at Au Train beach and just spending a few days just at the cottage. The kids enjoyed the small play set with the tettertodder. Finishing was fantastic! We caught Smallmouth, Northern Pike, catfish, rock bass, perch and enough bluegill to enjoy a fish fry. We used the kayaks several days as well. The lake is very quiet with very little boat traffic. We saw/heard Loons and Bald Eagles. As for the trash it was a minor inconvenience. The dumps were closed on our departure day and in the opposite direction we were headed. We could have planned a bit better to drop off trash on our visit into Munising but that’s kinda of the last thing I wanted to think about on vacation. Maybe limit the number of bags of trash that can be left and have the cleaning folks take it with them? Maybe for additional compensation they would? Or arrange something with the Melstrand General store or Bear Trap? Overall we had an absolute blast and made a very memorable trip for us and our kids. We’re lucky to have a found such a perfect place to spend a week exploring the Upper Peninsula!

Wonderful Getaway!
Our family really enjoyed our stay at this property. The location is perfect - across the road from Pictured Rocks, between Munising and Grand Marais. The house had everything we needed (including games and Legos for our) little guy, with plenty of room to spread out. The outdoor area was wonderful and we enjoyed fishing off the pier and going for a paddle in the canoe. The mosquitos were really bad - we expected this when outside, but they were also an issue inside the house. The mattress in the main floor bedroom was also a bit uncomfortable. But overall, it was a great stay and we look forward to staying here again! (Also, Jill was great at communicating - I appreciated how she checked in to make sure our stay was going well).

Secluded picturesque Cabin.
We had such a nice week at this property. The private lake was so nice. Not
Overcrowded with motor boats just a couple pontoons and fishing boats trolling along making kayaking and canoeing so nice and enjoyable. Having access to the two types of boats was a main attraction to the property. While we didn’t do any serious fishing I can only imagine what the fishing is like if you really give it a try. My kids were able to throw their lines in and catch a fish every time we took them down to the dock. The cabin itself had everything we needed to eat most meals in the cabin. I didn’t lack for any piece of kitchen equipment. The outside grill is super nice as well.
I do need to mention that WHATEVER you do follow the directions that Jill sends in the check in instructions. We figured that since google maps recognized the location it must have been updated since the initial listing was made. WRONG whatever you do do not go down Mahoney lake road. It is made for snowmobiles or Atvs. Needless to say it was a harrowing 15 miles in the Honda Odyssey bumping along to the lake. We were able to stop and talk to some nice people in a different area of the lake and we got to the cabin.
One last thing is come prepared for the bugs. I’ve read about the bugs in the UP but nothing really prepares you for how many bugs there are. They will find you pretty much wherever you are.
We recommend the pictured lake cruise. It was so cool seeing the rock formations from the water. If you’re kid free or have kids who are able to handle the paddling the kayak tour of the formations looked super cool.
Thanks again for sharing your property!

The house was as pictured. Lake is beautiful and we loved the little dock to sit on and enjoy the views. There is no boat launch on this lake for anyone that wants to fish there. Amenities and extras were appreciated - thankful that there was actually enough toilet paper/soap/etc (unlike most VRBOs). We appreciated that there was plenty of seating in the living room and loved the chairs overlooking the deck out to the lake. The owner was responsive and did communicate with us over an issue and provided a response quickly. When we were there (early June), there was also a terrible mosquito problem inside the house and we weren't able to kill them all and figure out where they were coming into the house, but they were everywhere (we killed them by the dozens). Sleeping was unbearable and we left a night early because it was so bad. Location was a little tricky to find and another visitor commented that the lighthouse is actually a windmill...we agree with that. Also notable is that there is no trash service which is very unfortunate and should probably be made clear in the listing. For the cost of the rental, we did feel that this should be included in the services of the home. Overall a lovely home with great space and views. We also really loved the kayaks that were available and the location made it a great launch spot for day trips..

The cabin was exactly as stated on the listing and the owner was extremely responsive and helpful. Cabin worked great for 3 guys and all the gear but would have accommodated more or a small family just as well. We had a great time and I’ll be saving this listing for future trips.

UP Fun!
The property had beautiful lakeside views. The fall colors were nice around Nevins Lake and it was very peaceful. We had fun skipping rocks in Lake Superior at Presque Isle Park. Also hiked and climbed the black rocks there. Our host was very pleasant and we are planning on returning in 2022.

Stayed at this property with my parents during our vacation to the UP. Jill was a very responsive host and was great at answering any questions we had. The house was exactly what we were looking for, located lakeside and in a quiet area. We were able to utilize the kayaks and canoes provided to explore the lake. It was a great place to stay and on our last day the weather cooperated and we were able to sit in the chairs on the beach and listen to the loons in the distance. Would definitely stay again!

We loved our stay! The property feels very secluded and has a wonderful beach our kids loved splashing around in. The location is perfect for going out on day hikes to Pictured Rocks, which was our main goal.
The house was clean and well equipped! We certainly hope to return!

Great Cabin In the Woods
A few friends and I came up here to hike/kayak Pictured Rocks and I have to saw this house was the perfect location. It's about 25 minutes south of the best hiking location, 35 minutes from Munising, and it sits on a gorgeous lake. You could literally see infinite stars when you went out on the dock. So beautiful.
The house as all the basic things you could possibly need (cookware, firewood, grill, games, etc.), the beds were comfortable, the house was super clean, and the grill was great. Jill is fantastic and will reply to you within an hour of messaging her. I would 100% stay here again and recommend this place to anyone.
A few things to be aware of:
- There is no place for you to throw away trash. You will need to take all trash with you to a dumpster off the property. I did not know this beforehand, so I would recommend doing this as the trip goes along instead of all at the end
- Do not use google maps for the last 45 minutes of getting to the house! Definitely follow Jill's directions. We ended up taking this 15 mile dirt/mud road that was meant for ATV's at midnight lol it was an adventure but we eventually made it.
- The lighthouse that Jill mentions is actually a windmill. Not a huge deal, but just wanted to point this out.
