About this bed and breakfast

Located in Fern Forest, this attractive bed and breakfast for £20 per night is a great choice for your next trip. THE "OKINA", at Paradise Unplugged, is a clean and private cabin that allows you to experience THE REAL HAWAII. This will give you an opportunity to stay within Hawaii's Largest Collection of Rainforest Tikis. Upon your arrival, you will experience our amazing Tiki collection along with our tropical plant nursery which includes over 300 rare Hapuu Ferns. You will see the many ways we live off grid in the Hawaiian jungle. ALOHA! Upon arrival, you will be greeted by our 7 life sized tiki statues that represent the game of chess. These tiki statues sit along a fence that was created using 100% recycled pallets. Once you enter the outdoor foyer, you will once again be greeted by 4 more life sized tiki statues. Upon entering the property, you will walk through our natural lava rock path called "The Horse Shoe". To the right you will see our rare collection of Hapuu Ferns along with other tropical plants from our nursery. To the left will be another 4 tiki statues from our collection ranging in sizes from 6 to 20 feet. All of our tiki statues are original pieces of artwork that are 100% hand carved. Along "The Horse Shoe" path you will also see several lava rock sculptures along with a "Rasta" sculpture that is insitu and still in the process of being created. After about a 100 foot walk, you will arrive at "The Okina" guesthouse. The Okina is a unique structure built from 100% recycled pallets! The hallways and sleeping area is about 100 sqft and features several pieces of original mixed media artwork and a futon style bed. We offer open spaced hallways along with a private lanai for you relax in and enjoy the tropical scenery. The hallway with black pillars and stringed bamboo will lead you to a unique indoor/outdoor jungle bathroom that is lined with totem poles that are 100% hand carved. There is an off grid igloo water cooler containing unheated non potable water.. The composting toilet is designed to be used as a future fertilizer producer for our tropical gardens. "The Okina" is a prime example of off-grid jungle living. Electricity is provided by mini "solar bricks" that will charge cell phones or tablets. Lights are battery operated. Our non-potable lava rock filtered water is naturally caught and is provided daily from our "Water House". A few points to consider before making a reservation. 1. Our paths are natural uneven lava rock. Please be able to walk on an even lava rock path. 2. This is the rainy side of the Big Island so expect some showers! 3. At night you are going to be serenaded by the sweet chirping of coqui frogs. 4. Also we strive to keep the cabin as clean as possible so we do not offer a kitchen and we do not allow cooking. 5. Please no pets, including service dogs. Guests have free range to enjoy the outdoor tiki collection and tropical garden full of Hapuu Ferns in "the Horse Shoe". Please take as many photos as you like, but remember the tiki statues are made from heavy Ohia wood. So we kindly ask our guests to look but please do not touch the original tiki statues. Here is a more comprehensive list of amenities and features that will be available to you: •Composting Toilet •Ample Parking •Motion Sensor ‘Flashlights’ •USB Outlets •Clean Linens Our goal is to make sure your stay is unforgettable. My wife Nicki and I live on site about 1/4 acre from "The Okina" guesthouse. Feel free to call or text us anytime of day or night and within 2 minutes we can be there to assist you. Upon your arrival we will happily greet and show you the way to "The Okina". "The Okina" is about 20 miles from Hilo, 25 miles from Pahoa, 15 miles from Keaau. There is quick access to highway 11 and it is about 8 miles from Volcanoes National Park.. When you book we will include a few recommendations that has the locations, hours and prices of local restaurants and grocery stores. This is the ultimate location for travelers who enjoy artwork and are looking to experience an off-grid self-sustainable lifestyle in the middle of the Hawaiian Jungle.

If you are a backcountry camper, this is for you! The hut is situated in primitive setting of rain forest. You can imagine a big tent but in wood sitting in the woods. I like the nature surrounding and the art deco. However, lack of electricity and a modern bathroom is a big downside. The host is friendly, responsive, and helpful. However, descriptions of the property and instructions to the property aren't sufficiently clear.

We absolutely loved staying here! We totally enjoyed the rustic Okina and the surrounding forest with the sound of the tree frogs at night. We both slept really well! I asked Jason and Nicki how they came to name the guest cabin "The Okina". We learned that an okina is the character similar to an apostrophe, found in many Hawaiian words, which indicates to pause or rest your voice briefly. Since this place is designed for pausing your travels to rest, we thought it was the perfect and most charming name! It is completely obvious how much love and hard work Jason and Nicki put into their property! They both care so much about the environment and it truly shows everywhere you look on their property, including the space they have carefully and brilliantly designed and built for guests. They are true artists! If you want to experience the rain forest, and be off grid for a day or two to refresh, this is the place to do it! Yes, it is very rustic, but that's part of the experience! It's super close to Volcanoes National Park - just about a 15-20 minute drive, with several places to eat or get coffee on the way there. We recommend arriving at the Okina during daylight to get your bearings. Then go see the lava in the park at dark and come back to get your rest at the Okina! Make sure you take in the gorgeous art that are so lovingly integrated into the trees and lava everywhere on the property! This is a true gem, and so are Jason and Nicki! Sometimes you are lucky enough to cross paths with truly amazing individuals. We got that when we stayed at the Okina. May we cross paths again! Mahalo, Jason and Nicki!
