Full disclosure, all we wanted was the private onsen. We didn't really care about having a traditional ryokan experience, so that may influence my opinion.
Pros:
* Large room
* Beautiful patio with private onsen
* Friendly staff and good service
* Fun to wear the traditional Japanese clothing provided
* Everything looked clean to the naked eye
* The TV in our room had Plex installed which was very nice for downtime and not something you find at many Japanese hotels
Cons:
* The Japanese food wasn't very good; Western food was fine
* Shortly after checking out, we broke into itchy bumps that look potentially like bedbug bites. We didn't see bedbugs, so I'm not stating as a fact that they were there. Just explaining what we experienced.
* After riding in a crowded bus then hiking 15 minutes uphill in the rain with heavy luggage to reach the hotel, I just wanted to get into our room. But we had to sit through a 15 minute checkin/welcome process including information intake that should have been collected online at the time of booking. I really did not have any spoons left to deal with that.

The room with private onsen is amazing , the dinner was the best in japan and service is the best of the best..

We had an amazing experience staying at Hakone Airu. It is totally worth it, the staff is very friendly and helpful. An excellent choice if you want to relax and rest. The only thing we regret is staying only for one night, we would have loved to spend at least two or three. We enjoyed the food and drinks too, great way to live a full traditional Japanese experience!

The onsen place and dining experience.

It was soooo good. The vibe and the food everything was perfect. I would go again.

If you are looking for a truly Japanese authentic ryokan experience, this isn’t it. Having visited a few other ryokans before, the experience was disappointing, most of the staff were not Japanese and were not educated on the meal items and could not cater to much requests or needs. The plus point is the size of the private onsen and the amenities in the toilet, compared to other ryokan of similar price range. So if your main purpose of visiting is to fully enjoy the onsen this would be a good choice for you.

Feeling rushed and less relaxed due to a 9 am check-out (although my booking confirmation stated 10 am). The food didn't meet kaiseki standards compared to other hotels. While the room was nice, the overall experience felt more like a boarding school than a relaxing onsen retreat, making it seem less value for money.

The rooms were large but old and shabby. A private onsen was nice! We got dinner, but the kaiseki dinner wasn’t very good and didn’t feel like it was worth the money.

We booked a room with a private onsen and it was spectacular, wished we had stayed longer but we only had one night in between visiting Tokyo and Osaka. The onsen was so relaxing, the view was great, the food was incredible, the staff incredibly friendly and attentive, we are looking forward to staying again. Made our trip to Japan so much more special.

In-room private onsen was wonderful.

The whole ryokan experience has been on my bucket list forever and when my plans to hike were foiled by some heavy rain, I decided that a ryokan with an in room onsen would be perfect. I used Expedia to book the room and found the ryokan to be quick in their responses and answered very clearly. At check in, we were welcomed with an incredible waterfall and a beautiful lobby. It was so much to take in and I had to pause and admire all the color, fine detail and gorgeous decor. Once inside the room, I immediately showered and jumped into the onsen and melted away into nirvana. We didn't even go into the public bath because the in room bath was way too perfect with the sound of the pouring water, chilling winds and rhythmic rain. The kaiseki meals were a joyful experience and I devoured every last bit of dinner and breakfast. Now, as a westerner, some may not appreciate the flavors but if you have an open mind and a hungry stomach you'll love it. This is a 10 out of 10 experience and will be back again and again and again!

Nice room bath
Terrific sushi dinner

Beautiful hotel, with amazing sweet staff, the room was amazing especially the private outdoor onsen in our room. There are also 2 public onsens available on the ground level. Rarely full as most people are in their private room onsen.
Close to the train station, and an easy walk into town. A little uphill walk, with suitcases, maybe a challenge, but otherwise, great location! We walked up and down to the train station without a problem.
We will be back!!

You are paying for the private onsen. Everything else is ok. Room and bed were nice. Staff are not Japanese, they are Balinese I think. Staff was charming and all, they tried hard, its just not that premier Japanese customer service we were used to at other hotels in Japan. Do not expect your traditional Japanese Ryokan experience here.
Dinner was not good at all. I mean seriously, it wasnt that they served like exotic foods, it's just the food was not good. No flavor, sushi wasnt fresh, bad tasting stuff etc. I recommend eating dinner elsewhere, there are lots of nice places with really good food about 10 minute walk from hotel by the train station. Hakone is a beautiful little town to explore anyway. The western breakfast was decent - cant go wrong with eggs and toast.
It was a lot of $ per night for subpar food, but you pay for the location and the private onsen which was really nice. Worth it? Kind of..Dont regret it also dont feel like thrilled we did it. Hope this helps.

We enjoyed our stay overall. The staff was very welcoming and greeted us with a glass of Champagne. Super nice touch.
The overall room/ beds were nice, great bathroom with really great toiletries, creams, etc. We even bought the Face Peel and Scrub in the gift shop. Our Western style Breakfast was really delicious and more than we could eat. Truly enjoyed.
There are a few suggestions that I’d recommend Management consider. It was wintertime and so it was hard to sit on the patio for very long, as it was chilly & it would have been nice to sit at a comfortable table.
Therefore-
1) A small Western style (2- seat) table in the room would be nice, allowing for a place to sit & read, (only Japanese TV), as when you’re in your 60’s it’s hard to always sit on the floor with those style Chairs. I’ve seen the taller table in other Ryokans.
2) A more modern Japanese style dinner meal would have been our preferred choice. At least to offer a second option from the extreme Japanese cuisine that was served at dinner.
We would have liked to see Sushi (like shown on your website), Sushi rolls, Boa Buns, Ramen, Japanese style BBQ. We didn’t come to dinner on the second night (which we paid for, no refund), because dinner the first night was too fishy tasting and heavy fish oriented. Way out there for the average tourist in our opinion. Too authentic Japanese, for these American tourists. The little Chicken in the soup was weird and cheap. The food quality needs to improve for dinner.

Overall it's a good experience! The Japaese meal for breakfast and dinner are amazing. The Aroma Massage was in-room and was great.
The only downside I have is that the restroom within the room has a constant unpleasant smell. We have to run the exhaust fan all night just to keep it from reaching the sleeping area.

It was very pleasant staying. Every single person of the facility was very nice and there was not any difficulty to communicate in English. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic, exceeding my expectations. Bathtub in the room was pretty spacious, probably enough for 2 persons. It was around 15 min from Hakoneyumoto station by walk but the path was quite tough to carry some luggages. It would be good to take a shuttle or a bus.

I would give it a 5 stars if it's not a Bali Vibe instead of a traditional Japanese vibe. Wouldn't had booked if I knew.

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay here. The private onsen alone was worth the trip! Dinner and breakfast were convenient and food was good but not great. Sleeping arrangements were comfortable. The room had everything we needed and more. Service was excellent.

Amazing service. We loved the room and stay here. The private onsen was the best!

We stayed for one night and we had an incredible time. The private meals were great with good variety - it was great to experience a traditional Japanese meal in this setup. The private onsen was also a highlight. Early in the evening it's a bit noisy when sitting outside due to a train station in close proximity, but it's truly quiet at night time. The staff were also super friendly.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hakone Airu. The private onsen was the best, and we got to experience kaiseki cuisine. Really recommended

Overall is good, the only one thing is privacy in the private hot spring area and shower room is not enough privacy. I thing they can make some more plant to enhance the transparency.

This was a nice place, the room was very big and I recommend the hotel for everyone that want a room with a private bath to a descent price. However, you should be aware that the hotel is a mix of Japanese and Bali influences which is especially clear in the common areas but not so much in your room. The lobby is quite simple but the facility is clean. The food is a bit simple and so is the service during your meals. The staff is however very friendly even though their English is a bit stumbling.

Great traditional riokan in beautiful area!

Room and service were perfect. Staffs are friendly. Provided water, bottled green tea and even beers in the fridge which was included with the room fee. Food was a bit over rated with this price. Food was a bit too salty for me. Nice presentation but not as tasty. Overall a good experience. Thanks

Balinese style and decor was beautiful

The experience at Hakone Airu is certainly unique and memorable. The rooms are simple but the bathroom gorgeous. Dinner was quite good and multi-course, VERY abundant - way too much food on the steak dinner actually! The staff are very nice but somehow not very knowledgeable about the area - we got either no answer or inaccurate answers about all transportation options (train, bus, and taxi!). We were told "you can find it on Google."

Commend the staff for being attentive and being helpful.
