We spend almost 30 minutes at the front desk for them to locate our reservations. Showed them the confirmation over and over but still have problems finding our reservations. Language is also a problem and when they finally found the reservations and show us to our room, the room was not even ready. No towels and only 1 set of kimonos. Room is very small and old, bathroom extremely small. Really not worth what we’re paying for. Only thing is location very convenient

This was a great base for visiting Kyoto, near the station and easy to find. Our room was comfortable and had everything we needed. The breakfasts were delicious and had lots of choice. Not all the front desk staff spoke English, but they were friendly and helpful, and we got sorted everything out, including sending our luggage back to Tokyo successfully.

I booked the room with board (meals) and emailed them a month early with my food allergies (sesame and nuts) and also provided them a list of my allergies along with the translation of it in Japanese the day I arrived. I asked multiple staff members if they could accommodate my allergies. They assured me yes. I ate their meal and immediately had an allergic reaction. I called the waitress over and said "does this have sesame?!" and she said "oh yes, that food does, don't eat that"! I spent the next 10 hours throwing up in my room and could not enjoy the facilities. This was unbelievable to spend almost $150 on the meal - and to have their staff lie to me after I checked 1 month early, the day of, and even provided them the list in Japanese, and to immediately eat something with sesame in it. They assured me the food was safe and clearly they could have cared less. I wish I could get my money back. DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU HAVE ALLERGIES.

We (family of 4) stayed two nights in a room with private bath. We had a wonderful time! Highly recommend for a family vacation or weekend getaway.

Extremely convenient location (5min walk from JR Kyoto Station), and they will help to store baggages for you after checkout! Lovely staff. Dinner was also delicious.

The entire time in this ryokan was amazing. such a convenient location to the Kyoto Station - made it easy to travel around.
English is somewhat minimal with staff, but they understood us and they were so accommodating. Everyone was so friendly and nice! We had such a great time there. We appreciated the kimonos/yukatas we got to wear. The bath house was great, not too hot.
AMAZING! Highly recommend to anyone!

A friendly ryokan very close to the station and to the bus terminus you'll need to reach any of the main sites in Kyoto (it's too big to walk around). Big japanese breakfasts!

The staff were so nice and friendly! The room was clean and comfy! My kids enjoyed dressing up in the yukata. Close to the train station so we had no trouble getting around the city.

The area around Kyoto Station is a very convenient place for shopping and sightseeing. also, Hifumi Ryokan is a just 5-minute walk from Kyoto Central Station Exit. The facilities in Ryokan are a little old and the public baths are a bit inconvenient, but the staffs were very friendly and the ryokan's meal (kaiseki) was fantastic. add, if you visit Kyoto with your kids, I strongly recommend visiting the Kyoto railway museum.

I enjoy ryokans. The tradition is refreshing and authentic

2 blocks distance from the Kyoto station, which makes it extremely convenient. Staff are very helpful and everything is very clean and organized. I recommend trying breakfast and Kaiseki dinner - extreme detail is put in preparing the food. Make sure you come hungry for the Kaiseki dinner. :) Make sure you select the right room type - some do not have private bathrooms. We chose the one with private bathroom and it was really good!

We had a great time living here. It's quite a nice Japanese hotel located close to the Kyoto train station. For tourists who are looking for a quiet and convenient place to stay, the hotel is definitely meet your needs. The staffs are all very nice and the house keeping services are terrific! Though they speak little English, they are all willing to help you with everything. The Tatami and the mattress were so comfortable that we don't want to wake up in the morning. We would like to recommend this hotel to everyone who wants to experience a traditional Japanese style of living.

Fantastic location a few minutes walk from Kyoto Station down a narrow street with lots of ryokans and some good restaurants. Excellent Ofuro on the ground floor. Spacious tatami room. We didn’t have meals there but dinner looked very good. Staff extremely helpful. Would have stayed longer if they hadn’t been fully booked for the extra days we wanted.

Pro's:
* Public bath to relax before / after a long day
* Breakfast was wonderful. Definitely spend extra to get it.
* Great location: very close to the subway, restaurants, and shopping.
* Friendly staff that did every thing they could to help. We also received small keychains as parting gifts.
* There's a little snack left for the guests every day to enjoy with tea.
Con's:
* Rooms were a bit small for a group of four. The tatami fits about four single-sized futons.
* The public bath is on the small side and can use some updating.

If you want to experience a traditional room in Japan for an accesible price this is your option! Just a warning. They have two types of rooms. The majority of them is with shared shower! So double check because for 10 dls more you can have your private shower. Totally worth it!

Nice ryokan. Near the station. Clean. I have loved the japanese breakfast.

Great location behind a busy street and very close to Kyoto station for train and bus transportation to the sights. We stayed as a family of 4 for 3 nights and enjoyed the experience. Although the room and facilities are fairly basic but clean and tidy, staff are friendly and polite. The beds are made ready everyday, with free snacks provided on the table, which shows thoughtful attention to detail.

It was a little bit challenging to find the simple location, as someone who had never been to Japan. I would have to say that the confusion was more on the transit side than the hotel location, though. Once you learn (as I quickly did) how the street system works in Japan's cities, it makes it easier to find. That said: It is very well located, and the street on which it is located is one that adds to the magic of it all.
When I walked inside, I was welcomed (and subsequently upgraded to the larger slippers...lol), and then quickly checked in. In fact, they had my reservation information up in a blink of an eye. I was given the quick (in adequate English) rundown of the building layout, and ushered to my quarters with a smile. I enjoyed the half-board, which meant dinner and breakfast were included. The food was traditional, and I enjoyed the experience. I was instructed by the matron who seated and served me on how to eat certain things, fully in Japanese (and with great gesturing, which I could more easily understand.) Every one of the staff made my first experience a very warm one, in fact.
The room was simple, which is what i was looking for. I pulled an extra set of futons to pile onto my first one to make it more comfortable for me, and the sleep was great. The onsen was perfect, especially after hours, and during the early part of the day.
If ever in Kyoto, I think this is one of those places I would highly recommend.

Wonderful Staff, they were gracious and helpful. We adore our dinner hostess, she was amazing!

While this place is nice enough, it is the people that work here that make it a truly great place to stay. After getting caught in the rain during our recent stay we headed back to change into dry clothes. When we were ready to go again they gave us umbrellas to use and offered to dry our soaking wet shoes.
The beds were pulled out of a night and tidied away again in the morning. There is always hot water available for tea in your room and the guys at reception go out of their way to help you.
I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a traditional stay in central Kyoto.

Nice traditional ryokan and we had the half board. As expected, lots of food for dinner and breakfast. Location is perfect, right smack in the center of Kyoto.

We had a great experience staying at this ryokan. We stayed here for 2 nights. It is very close to the Kyoto station on a small alley that hosts several ryokans. As we were coming during Thanksgiving week, still peak season for fall colors. The hotels in Kyoto were booked to 90% capacity. Not wanting to spend more than thousand dollars for a ryokan, I booked this hotel for the location and price. Even though on Expedia's description this hotel is a smoke free facility, I was confirmed by the hotel staff that there's no room designated for non smoking. I was reluctant to stay in this hotel as it is indicated that my reserved room is a smoking room. But I'm glad that I didn't change hotel. We got a 10 tatami room for a family of 4. There's private bath in the room. Very clean and spacious. And most importantly, there's no trace of smoking smell at all in the room! (I did email the hotel ahead of time that we are very sensitive to smoke). I booked breakfast for one day and half-board for the 2nd. The food is scrumtious! We couldn't possibly finish everything!! If you like Japanese cruisine, the meals are really tasty, if not, you might skip it. It is quite pricy, so if you eat a lot, it would be more worth it.
Since it's a Japanese style room, there's no chairs in the room. If you have bad knees, I would not recommend staying at this hotel. You will have to sit on the tatami floor the whole time you are in the room.
I would definitely stay here again!
