About this cottage rental

LAHARANDOTA - The Artists' Cottage & Studio, an old stone farmhouse previously owned by American painter Frank Russell, is fully renovated to include slate floors, old beams and stone walls. Set in over an acre of land and surrounded by fields with extensive views over the sea and the Mizen Head. Ideal for those looking for a relaxing holiday or weekend retreat, for walkers/cyclists or families, with its large garden, spring, pond and small outdoor pool (solar heated). Located 4 miles west of the local village of Kilcrohane, and a scenic half-hour drive from the busy market town of Bantry with its great restaurants and pubs. Stroll down the lane from the cottage directly onto The Sheep's Head Way, one of Ireland's 31 Waymarked Ways (marked trails). The peninsula's natural wild beauty makes its 55-mile trail stand out from others and offers an exciting challenge for all keen walkers. If, however, you're not a 'wild rover', there's always riding, sailing, kayaking, diving, golf... AS FEATURED IN ALASTAIR SAWDAY'S IRELAND GUIDE: Review: 'Now how many Irish cottages come with an outdoor pool? Next to the road but shielded by hedges, it even has sea views! You are at the tip of the strikingly beautiful Sheep’s Head peninsula, a paradise for walkers. Laharandota was the house of an artist for many years; it still shows. Everything inside is in the best possible taste and breathes a generous spirit: a wonderful kitchen with a big Rayburn stove, art, objets and a fabulous hamper, a claw-foot bath, a glass-walled sun room, nooks, crannies and a rustic fireplace that roars in winter. Next-door’s studio, often rented to the same party, provides comforts on a reduced scale, but the light, the art, and the sea views are the same. Hike a part of the Sheep’s Head Way: ‘the best walk in Ireland’ says Country Walking magazine. Head for the lighthouse, look out for choughs and peregrines. Shops and restaurants are a short drive away, and lovely Bantry Town and sandy Barleycove beach are not much further. Inspirational'. Guest Comments: 'It is a fabulous place to stay - we found ourselves spending lots of time just pottering around the cottage because it was so lovely. We will definitely come again and will recommend it to our friends.' Gerry & Liz, Gloucestershire 'Thank you so much for the weekend. I must say your cottage is spectacular - you have a real eye for interiors and the quality of the renovation and furnishings is stunning. We had 3 days of great weather, the kids were even swimming in the sea. They didn't want to leave and now want to live there!' Adam & Jane, Hertfordshire 'Thank you for a wonderful 3 days in your beautiful cottage. It was everything we had dreamed of and more. We absolutely fell in love with The Artists' Cottage and the surrounding area.' Jayne & Gordon, Rockingham, Australia 'We had a fabulous time. The setting was wonderful and the cottage was just gorgeous. Daniel loved his cute little bedroom. He was even brave enough to swim in the pool!' Pamela & Roger, Glasgow 'Thank you for providing such a welcoming, comfortable taste of rustic charm for us city-dwellers. We all loved everything about the cottage. Of course, the swimming pool is the icing on the cake - luckily the weather was glorious so we chilled out and lazed by the pool or braved its invigorating freshness!' John & Susan, Edinburgh 'Just a note to say how much we enjoyed the cottage. It is in a beautiful and unspoilt location and the views across the bay are something to remember. The quality of the finish and furnishing in The Artists' Cottage is incredible, really beautiful. We had some really lovely times there and we will remember it with great affection.' This is a 5-star accommodation. We had a lovely stay at the cottage, and can't wait to get back. Everything was perfect! It's a spacious cottage with a beautiful garden and breathtaking views. We had plenty of room to spread out (we were a family of 4, + 2 friends in the next door Studio) and comfortably enjoy ourselves. The kitchen is well-appointed and the fireplace was our favorite detail, as we ended each fun-filled day in front of it. The property is exceptionally clean. The owners were very attentive to our needs and answered all of our questions in a timely manner. They were always very helpful. And, Julie provided us with plenty of information and recommendations about the surrounding areas. Our favorite restaurant by far was Arundel's, as we ate there 3 times during our short stay! The couple that runs it were lovely and the food was fantastic. Some of the best dining out during our 16-day trip to Ireland. We especially enjoyed the hike back from the lighthouse. We chose the more challenging trail back to the car park, and it was well worth it. It afforded us some amazing views on some pretty high cliffs. I also recommend a hike to the waterfall and the blow hole. Although, we never found the elusive "blow hole", we were able to again capture some breathtaking cliffs/views of the bay. The Sheep's Head peninsula was absolutely gorgeous. Lots of great hikes! A great way to end your day was a visit to Eileen's pub in nearby Kilcrohane for a pint and a chat. Overall, our stay here was superb. We have nary a complaint, and we are already itching to get back there. I highly recommend the cottage, the studio and Sheep's Head.

We rented both the Cottage and the studio, both of which were excellent: very comfortable beds, nice crockery/ cutlery and a good selection of local maps and information. Very clean and well maintained. The location was outstanding. Very quiet with beautiful views from both master bedrooms. We would have no hesitation recommending it to friends. We found everyone in the local galleries / restaurants / pubs very friendly. We ate out most days and would particularly recommend the Fish Kitchen and Brick oven in Bantry and Arundels in the nearest village.

When we decided go to Ireland for our honeymoon, we looked on VRBO and my husband told me to pick any cottage I wanted. This was the one that immediately caught my eye, I wanted nothing else and no other cottage could live up to this one. I was completely smitten with all of the pictures. As soon as we opened the door, I was in love!! It looked exactly like the pictures, even better! She had even prepared brownies, champagne and a lovely note for us when we arrived. It was the perfect location to relax and get away from all of the busyness, not to mention its gorgeous view!! We immediately felt right at home. The house had everything we needed and more. It was fun to explore the little property, take a walk down the street, and read a book in the sunroom. They had instructions for everything, which was really helpful. As soon as we got back, I could not stop raving about this cottage. I am hoping it will still be for rent in a few years so we can return!! We LOVED everything about it and cannot wait to return!

Although only our first visit to Ireland I doubt we could have found a better place to stay than the Artists Cottage, Laharandota. Quality abounds everywhere from the well maintained exterior and grounds of the property through to the beautiful and tasteful decor and fittings inside. An enormous amount of thought, time and not to mention money has obviously been lavished on this property resulting in a superb blend of 'old world' Irish charm coupled with the benefit of modern comfortable living. There are so many thoughtful touches throughout this homely cottage that it it simply wouldn't be possible to list everything within a review. Suffice to say that as owners of holiday rental property ourselves for over a decade we probably wouldn't be the easiest of guests to impress! In summary, an outstanding property with many high quality fittings set in beautiful tranquil surroundings. We wish we could have stayed longer and will definitely return to Ireland again. Very impressed!!!...and most highly recommended! Des, Gemma and Charlie

The cottage and studio are tastefully and beautifully furnished. We really appreciated the quality of the finish but the traditional Irish charm of the property was not lost. I'd highly recommend this property for a romantic weekend or as a base for lazily exploring the peninsula.

Our trip to the Artist’s Cottage was more perfect than we could have ever expected. Despite the bad weather, the cottage’s setting is breathtaking and peaceful, ample food for the soul. Inside the house is extremely inviting with comfortable bedding and a cosy fireplace with an generous supply of firewood. The bathrooms and kitchen are fitted out to the highest standards and those who enjoy cooking will relish the Rayburn stove and lovely Le Creuset and Chasseur cookware. I especially got a kick out of the self-closing drawers and cupboards! Even for those who are not usually partial to cooking up a storm it is hard to resist the country charm of the kitchen and the compulsion to prepare some freshly baked bread. Julie really thinks of everything to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible with board games, DVD’s, guide books and an iPod dock supplied. Unfortunately due to the weather we didn’t get to try out the swimming pool but hopefully we will have better luck on our next visit. I can’t recommend the Artist’s Cottage highly enough for anyone looking for a peaceful retreat whether it be to huddle with a good book by the fire or hike around the Sheep’s Head Way. The Artist’s Cottage provides the comfort and luxury of a fine hotel but with the freedom and privacy that you can only get from self-catering. Our holiday was just for myself and my husband but I can imagine it would be equally ideal for a family or group of friends. We will definitely be going back!

We had a fantastic time in this beautifully decorated and maintained cottage and studio. Every corner of both buildings was brimming with carefully chosen and loved treasures. The use of texture and colour was beyond professional. it was even better than the photos on the site. The linens were luxurious with great piles of blankets and gorgeous quilts. The bathrooms were immaculate with good quality towels and again decorated in great style. The roll top bath was a big hit! The kitchen was well kitted out and it was a novelty to cook on the Rayburn - i turned out a pretty good roast chicken on the first night having had a speed read of the Rayburn cook book found on the shelf above, this is proof that it is easy to use! We loved having the pool and went in everyday even the day it was overcast and slightly rainy. We cycled to the Sheep's Head, then whizzed back and leapt in the pool - bliss. There is so much to do in the area - included using the bikes, walking down to coves and rock climbing, skimming stones or just watching the sun set. The cove closest to the house was great for a walk before dinner. We went over to Baltimore and went whale watching with Nic Slocam - a geat afternoon and highly recommended. We had some great meals in Bantry, Skibereen and Schull. Of course we loved the places in Kilcrohane and quickly felt at home there. The little cove and the jetty in Kilcrohane were charming and a game of tennis on the local court was fun as the court sloped away at one end... i would recommend this enchanting property to friends knowing that they would be very comfortable and well taken care of. We would love to come back. Thank you.
