During the summer season, the streets are bustling all day long, while they are less crowded in the winter. GETTING AROUND In Como and neighboring cities, there are ASF bus services; tickets can be purchased on the bus (cash only) or at other authorized points (the bus station in Piazza Matteotti in Como, bars, and tobacco shops). Taxi services are also available. From the pier, ferries reach Cernobbio, Torno, Bellagio, Varenna, Colico, and other locations along the lakefront. Please note that, during high season, there may be long queues at the ticket office before boarding. Tickets can also be purchased online on the "Navigazione Laghi" website. From San Giovanni railway station in Como, you can regularly reach Milano Centrale and Switzerland (Lugano, Bellinzona, Locarno), while from Como Nord Lago station, you can reach Milano Cadorna railway station. The nearest airports are Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, and Orio Al Serio in Bergamo. Shuttle services to and from the airports can be easily arranged at an additional cost. TIPS We recommend dedicating a day to visiting the wonderful towns around the lake. Como city is the urban center of the area, but the towns are jewels with splendid villas on the lake. When moving around and strolling along Lake Como, especially in small towns, it is necessary to wear comfortable shoes. There are many public drinking fountains in the area, and the water is safe to drink, unless indicated otherwise. Tap water is also drinkable. You can bring your refillable bottle! If you are looking for a relatively easy excursion in the area and still want to enjoy the mountain views, the Greenway of Lake Como is an easy-to-follow path that connects the lake towns from Colonno to Griante and does not require too many climbs. A bus will take you to the starting point in Colonno. Look for traditional restaurants to taste local foods, such as dishes based on Lake Como fish. In Italy, many shops (especially small ones) and services are closed in the middle of the day, so be sure to plan your purchases accordingly. Lake Como is one of the deepest lakes in Europe and the deepest in Italy. Swimming and diving are prohibited in many areas and can be dangerous. However, for those who wish to immerse themselves in the water, there are some options. In Como, there is an outdoor pool near Villa Olmo, but swimming in the lake is strongly discouraged and mostly prohibited. There are beaches in other locations along the lakefront. A nice little beach is located in Careno, but it may be crowded on weekends. Residents and visitors also enjoy going to Nesso, where the bravest swimmers can dive into the lake from the ancient Roman bridge near the waterfall. Bellagio Lido and the pebble beach of San Giovanni await those who want to travel and explore the beautiful city of Bellagio, which is located in the center of the two branches of the lake.
