Fireplace, rocking chairs and an expansive view of the lush Big Island up country flora made for a very inviting stay. The facility is extremely well maintained.
Coqui frogs, but this is Big Island so not much you can do about that. Very happy we don't have the little invasive buggahs in Kihei.

location good; good restaurant on grounds.
well behaved clientele.
No daily attention to room - i.e. no trash removal, no new towels, no making of bed. We don't need or want daily clean sheets. Just some basic maintenance.
Difficult to find phone charging electric outlet. Had to pull extension cord from behind armoire.
Door lock not at eye level. Had to get down on my knees to read the display and put the code in!
Noise of coqui frogs at night very annoying at night. No indication they are trying to do something about them.
They are a common problem on the Big Island, so not their fault.
Couldn't turn off towel heater which made the bathroom oppressively hot. (It was a warm weekend for Volcano)
Bed like a marshmallow, poor back support.

Very close to volcano national park.
First room was very small, oddly shaped. We asked to move. Second room was larger, more comfortable, with a very nice sitting area just outside. Biggest problem.was, only one small window opened and the room got very warm in the afternoon and did not cool off very quickly.

It was a lovely accommodation in a quiet forest. The air was cool and refreshing. I was surprised to find out that there is a place like this in Hawaii.
It would have been nice to have a room with a bathtub.

wonderful ambiance. it is an old building with old furniture, very simple. but it exuded a charm I have not experienced in a very long time. when it was time to leave, I felt like I was leaving an old friend. the hotel is small, so I got to know the staff. and I also made friends with their senior cat Meatloaf.
I would have liked a desk or small table in the room I could type on. but I made do.

fabulous location. around 7 minutes from the park entrance it means you can do a bit, take a break and do more. it also means you can drive in and see the lava at night. rooms are huge. some good eating options nearby. loved the restaurant.
I would have loved help with my luggage. the hot tub wasn’t working.

Other than the park lodge this was definitely the best place to stay in the Volcano National Park Area. The room was very clean, spacious and well furnished. and I imagine s were much nicer than the park lodge however the lodge had a bar and restaurant which seemed pretty lively. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We had dinner at the restaurant which was good but a little on the pricey side but still nice. Able to park right outside the building.
It would be nice to have a TV in the room just to have something to watch at night. I realize people don't come to Hawaii to sit in their room but thing close early and it would be nice just to have something to watch rather than going to the common room and plugging in a tape. Fo the price we paid a TV would be a nice addition.

old YMCA lodge, quaint, and wonderfully maintained. Perfect for Volcano National Park Exploring. Absolute pearl in Hawaii.

Location is great for seeing the lava at night. Dinner was very tasty.
The blinds do not close all the way so people can also look inside from the ouside. (I felt uncomfortable travelling alone.) They said this would be updated soon.
The bed was a bit short in length. (Maybe just my impression not a reason not to visit.)

The facilities are beautiful and comfortable. The restaurant on the premises was not open when we were there, but the locals told us it has fantastic food. The lady who checked us in was very informative and let us know how to get around and when the best times would be to see the volcano. And don't forget the cat, Meatloaf! He is there to greet you whenever you are arriving or leaving the premises.
There isn't air conditioning, so windows and shutters need to stay open in order to cool off. That can make for a privacy issue. There are also no televisions, so any news or weather updates needed to be done via cellphone. Not a huge downside.
