Aug 2020We stayed at this house for a week. Overall it was a great experience with a few constructive comments as noted below.
The location of the house was perfect. Minutes to restaurants, the rail trail, Skaket or Nauset beaches, grocery and liquor stores. Everything you could need is very close by.
The house had plenty of room for our group of four adults and five children (ages 3-8). The house actually looked better in person than in the photos, it was brighter and more spacious than the pictures appeared. 4/5 of the bedrooms had window unit air conditioners and there was also one in the kitchen which did a good job cooling the kitchen and main floor area. Note: When we arrived we ended up vacuuming a thick layer of dust from all of the window units' filters, they were filthy.
The outdoor space suited our needs perfectly with a large eating area, fire pit and yard for the kids to run around in. The outdoor shower was fantastic! It was used daily and was such a treat after a day at the beach. The house is on a shared driveway, but we rarely saw the neighbors during our stay.
The walk to the town cove was short. While swimming there would be challenging, it was great to walk down to fish, or go in the evening and watch the sunset. We even saw some seals playing in the water.
Generally, the house was clean and the appliances were in good shape. The house was not dirty or dusty, the kitchen was well spacious and stocked with most of what you'd need for a week.
Our biggest complaint was a musty smell in the home and a plethora of ants as well as moths/bugs flying around for the duration of our stay. We always kept the doors closed during our stay and never opened the windows. We messaged the owners and they immediately responded that they usually have an exterminator come in September, but they'd reach out to have them come sooner. So, that issue may have been resolved since our stay. If we could have given a 3.5 on cleanliness we would have, but rounded up due to the responsiveness of the owners and the lack of dust/dirt, etc.
Overall we would stay here again, the location cannot be beat! Read more

Sep 2021We rented this house for a family of 6 with one infant. There was plenty of room for all of us. The front of the house has a living room with 3 bedrooms and bath that we were able to close the French doors to the rest of the house and not hear a thing. We lovingly called this the "West Wing". This was perfect for my son, his wife and grand daughter. The kitchen is roomy and had all the necessities. The creme de la creme was the downstairs living room. That is where we spent most of our time while indoors. The only thing that would have helped tremendously would have been an air conditioner. It gets very warm down there. Outside the table area was perfect for dinners as well sitting by the fire pit. Many members of my family preferred to shower outdoors including the dogs! It is a short walk to the cove where we paddle boarded, had our morning coffee or watched the sunset. Would definitely recommend this place! Read more

Sep 2017We really liked the house and property. Was spacious, clean, low key, not ostentacious...very comfortable for our family. Easy access by bike to Nauset Beach, as well as other destinations. One persistent problem, three different people had the experience of tripping at the interface of the deck and large piece of granite! all sober adults. The rise/run ratio is way off legal. Read more

Dec 2020We loved it -- the photos were accurate and the location was nice, with access via an easement to the bayside. The working fireplaces couldn't be used, as per MA law that wasn't mentioned in the listing and we weren't aware of, but otherwise, it was great! Read more

Aug 2018We just loved staying at the Salty Dog cottage. It truly is much bigger than it looks. The walk down to the sunset on the cove was short and had lovely views. We enjoyed both Skaket (great for the little ones) and Nauset beaches most days. Decks had great relaxing seating for outside eating. Outside shower was a true hit. Great space for our small dogs also. Everyone was more than happy. Thank you so much for sharing your lovely property with us. The gardens were well maintained as so pretty. We would love to rent again next summer. Read more

Aug 2020We have stayed at the Salty Dog cottage three times now as a family in Orleans. We just love it here. Plenty of room for us to spread out. With 5 bedrooms and 2 inside bathrooms and an outdoor shower and decks with plenty of seating we have a wonderful time. The location between 2 fine beaches and near bike trails, and hiking trails is just great for us. Sunsets on the cove down the path, sunrises at Nauset beach. For us it's ideal. The children look forward to this each year. Read more

Jul 2018We have done many family vacations over the years, and this is definitely one of the best homes we have stayed at! The home was very clean and spacious. I absolutely loved the backyard and the large seating area on the deck. We had perfect weather for our stay, and utilized the outdoor eating area and grill a few times. The large family/game room was perfect for ALL of us to spend time together in one area. The bedrooms were spacious as well.
Thank you again Ann and Dean for sharing your beautiful home with us. We would definitely stay here again!

Sep 2016We had a wonderful stay in this cottage. Ann was incredibly accommodating and helpful. The home is spacious, comfortable, quiet, and in a lovely area. It is right outside of town, 10 minutes from two different beautiful local beaches, and within 1 hr of everywhere else on Cape Cod. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you might need, we grilled each night, and we had a wonderful evening toasting marshmallows over the fire pit. A pleasure! Read more

Jun 2022We all had a great time! The location in Orleans is perfect! About equidistant between Sandwich and Provincetown, so we could plan many things and be a half hour away.

Jul 2016We absolutely loved this cottage. It was in a great location separated from the busy street with privacy from neighbors. It has a beautiful outdoor setup which is perfect for cooking and eating outside. It's also just a short walk to the cove and only a couple of miles from nauset beach. Aug 2018Three generations and had a great time. The house was large and comfortable. Kids had their own space downstairs and enjoyed games available. Our dog absolutely loved swimming in the Cove. Close to everything. It was such a pleasure to have real beds for everyone, usually when they say it sleeps 10 there is a pull out sofa or futon. Plus there was actually room for 10 people to eat inside and outside. Everyone was happy with the outdoor shower. Great yard and loved the fire pit area.

Sep 2021This property was the perfect spot to gather family for our daughter's wedding at Nauset Beach. The bedrooms are separated between two wings in the house making for some privacy among the family groups. The spacious family room was the perfect place for our daughter to prepare for her big day and the outdoor space is wonderful. The only thing that I wish I had figured out sooner is that there is a really great woodland walking path not far from the property. The Ice House and Ruben's Pond Conservation area is up Tonset Road and is a great place to walk a dog. Check out the Orleans Conservation Trust website for that and other great hikes around the area.
Thank you so much for sharing your home with us. We had a fantastic time and made some really great family memories! Read more

Jun 2022My friends and I decided to rent the house to getaway from our lives for the week. The house was in a nice location for travel to other parts of the outer Cape. There were plenty of stores around the area if you were to forget anything. The house was nice and clean when we arrived. The house has an eclectic layout but it adds to the charm. There were plenty of things left in the house to make it easier to move in and stay for the week.
There was enough room that the 6 of us didn't feel like we were on top of each other. We made extensive use of the fire pit which was a great thing to have. The access to the cove was a bit overgrown and we had a few ticks after using the path. Also if you or anyone you travel with snores make sure to pack ear plugs as the walls don't block a lot of sound.
I definitely recommend the house if you're looking for a base of operations in the outer part of Cape Cod. Read more

Aug 2016I've rented houses in Orleans since my marriage -46 years ago. It is our family tradition. This house is perfect. The house is large and totally updated. It is comfortable with beautiful furnishings and immediately I felt at home. The yard was perfect for our large family. We played games, lit the fire pit and enjoyed meals at the large beautiful outdoor table. It is on a dead end road, perfect for children and even has a bay on the property to enjoy my am coffee. This house is truly my favorite. Can't wait to return. Read more

Sep 2019I've been staying in rental cabins on the cape since I was 4. I've probably stayed in at least 20 different rentals in eastham, orleans, and a few other places. This one was mixed. Overall it's a good sized house, with enough bedrooms, kitchen space, living spaces, and outdoor space for everyone to spread out. The kitchen was pretty well stocked, as were the linen closets.
However, there were quite a few problems. primarily the beds were awful. Soft, lumpy, lifeless - several of us had sleepless nights which makes you tired and irritable the rest of the day.
Also, the water access is not as good as we thought. Yes, there's a path to the cove, but once there, it's all mucky marsh grass, no real place to sit and relax as a group, and very buggy.
Additionally there were a host of little things: broken toilet seat, which I had to fix on day one in the house, crazy latch on the outside shower so multiple people got locked inside, extremely squeaky hinges on doors that woke up kids and grownups alike at night.
Lastly there was a pervasive chemical smell that was overwhelming when we first walked in. It dissipated with windows open but kept returning at various points during our stay.
I would not stay here again or recommend to friends. Read more

Aug 2021Each person in our group, upon arrival, remarked about how spacious this home is, especially compared to other Cape Cod homes we have stayed at in the past. The large living room, open kitchen and lower level den provide lots of options for gathering or spreading out. Also, the large, mostly flat, shady yard provided nice space for lawn games in and out of the sun. The fire pit got a lot of use, too.
The neighborhood is remarkably quiet and dark at night; very restful. We heard wildlife sounds nearly every night. The property is on a short, dead end, dirt road, so there is almost no traffic passing by. The home is very conveniently situated within 5 minutes drive from the Nauset Beach gate, a grocery, a CVS, downtown Orleans and Route 6, the main artery of Cape Cod. There is Town conservation land with about 2 miles of walking trails on Tonset Road within easy walking distance from the property. We also took a drive (about 5 miles) up Rte. 6 to the Fort Hill area within the National Seashore and found some nice walking trails and some wheelchair accessible boardwalk trails.
The access from the Salty Dog property to Town Cove is by a narrow path which leads to the easterly shore, too narrow and too far (~ 400 ft) to carry kayaks, we concluded. It's a great place to watch sunsets. Fishing left something to be desired due to vegetation along the shore. One of our party did see a seal in the Cove one evening. That was memorable. The Cove is a rather large body of water perhaps a mile long and a half mile wide, resembling a lake but connected to the sea. We kayaked on it from a town boat launch on Old County Road (off Rte. 6, just across the Cove from the property) and had a great time.
Communications with the owners could not have been better. Always got prompt replies.
People familiar with the Cape know that it is a sandbar surrounded by ocean and is, therefore, from May to October, humid except when it is damp. There is a slight mustiness in the lower level den of the Salty Dog. Some of our group were bothered, others were not. A couple of them spend several entire days working remotely down there without complaint.
There is twice-weekly trash collection on-site which is very helpful. There are loads of dishes, cooking utensils, flatware, tableware, etc.. Also, plenty of tables and chairs, inside and out. All were in good condition.
We very much enjoyed our time at the Salty Dog and would stay there again without question. Read more

Jul 2022Close proximity to town of Orleans with Skakat beach nearby for awesome sunsets. Nausea beach had the sunrise which we saw most mornings. Outdoor living area was very good at the house with al fresco dining and fire pit. Awesome outdoor shower. The path to the pond is overgrown and we were very hesitant to walk thru it so didn't see much of that. Big house with almost two separate wings and then space to come together at the end of the day.
