We really wanted to experience life in an old Maine camp and this fit the bill perfectly. Spruce Lodge had everything we needed for our stay. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was adequate. Being over 100 years old, the floors are uneven and therefore a little hard for older people like us to walk on. It would be nice if that could be fixed. We especially enjoyed the water view and watching for wildlife. The location of Spruce Lodge worked well for our daily excursions to Brunswick, Freeport, Manchester, Bailey's Island, and Rockland.

Cozy old Maine “camp” in an amazing waterfront location! First, the positives: situated only 20 feet from the water, the screened in porch seems to extent right over the water. One on the three queen beds is a fold-out futon on the porch. That is about as close as you can get to sleeping on a boat while still on shore! Shares a dock with another rental up on the road. Also a shared fire pit overlooking the water. One canoe to borrow per property to explore the waterfront, with paddles and life jackets. Living room has enough room to comfortable spread out and read, play games, or watch TV. Now the negatives: the floors are quite uneven and settled. Another review said the house was sinking into the ground. I wouldn’t say that bad, but an older person less steady on their feet might have problems walking through the house. The two bedrooms are directly off the main room and the doors don’t close. And the doors are glass, so you can see right into the bedrooms from the living room at all times. Zero privacy. Family of four with little kids would likely not be an issue, but I wouldn’t want to share the house with another couple. Only place with privacy is the bathroom. Also, the roof on the screen porch leaks… Right onto the pull-out futon that is the third queen bed. However, there is a single-size folding cot that can serve as the third bed in the living room if it rains. The owner is easy to reach if needed. Overall a pretty good property with some issues

You can't beat the view from the screened in porch, but the house itself is pretty rustic. The doors to the bedrooms don't close, so privacy for us parents was non-existent. No washing machine was also not great, but the laundromat isn't far. All in all we had a wonderful stay, but this is not a place for people who want luxury!

From the pictures posted on VRBO, the property looked rustic enough for a family that enjoys camping and is not averse to staying in an authentic Maine camp house (one of the few remaining in the area according to the proprietor) Unfortunately this structure, with a lot of potential, is slowly being consumed by the Earth on which it rests. There are few level surfaces, only two of the seven doors in the structure are operational (bathroom and main entrance thankfully), The roof leaks noted on prior reviews have not been addressed, the toilet leaks and the exposure to full sun allows the structure to heat up unbearably even with the two small and older window AC units running at their full capacity (even after I cleaned the filters which were completely blocked with dust - you're welcome) We decided to cut our visit short to avoid further discomfort In closing, a more apropos description of this property should be "better than a tent", but then again, my tent's roof doesn't leak

An aged rustic cabin.
An aged rustic cabin.
Great water view. Pleasant responsive owner. Good WiFi and great drinking water. Spruce cottage was superficially clean but the woodwork and behind everything was dirty. This cabin is very rustic, floors irregular requiring good balance. The electrical wires and plugs were connected by ancient electrical wiring and extension cords. The porch roof leaked on the third porch futon. Truly a rustic camp not neat cottage.

Great Location!
Great Location!
A lovely spot, secluded, but convenient to some of our favorite places. And it was also great just to sit on the porch and watch the tide come in and out while observing all the wildlife. The cabin was a little more rustic than we anticipated, but more than adequate for our needs. Thank you for a great vacation!

Classic Maine camp directly on the water
Classic Maine camp directly on the water
This is a classic, rustic Maine camp where you can celebrate summer the way it was meant -- watching the tides go in and out, taking the canoe for a spin, sitting outside and grilling. The house also had everything we needed. Between the kitchen and the outdoor grill we had everything we needed for cooking meals, the living room was stocked with games and puzzles for a rainy day, and the porch has a foldout futon for taking naps. Jon and Nina were great hosts as well who live just down the road in case anything came up.

Rustic Maine cottage
Rustic Maine cottage
If, like us, you love classic Maine camps, each with its own charms and idiosyncrasies, then you will be happy here. If you prefer more updated accommodations and creature comforts you will want to look elsewhere, perhaps including Jon and Nina's upper cottage. Jon and Nina are really nice people who always responded quickly and positively to any request or challenge. I look forward to coming back. Note that if there are guests in Jon's upper cottage most of the outdoor space around your cottage will be shared with them.
