Maine Saltwater Farmhouse on 80 acres with private rocky shore
About this farm stay rental
Situated in Cushing, this lovely farm stay for R 11,788 per night is a fantastic choice for your next vacation. This Saltwater Farmhouse is a classic 150+ year-old clapboard house with attached barn on 80 private acres, including woods and a hay field gently sloping to the rocky Maine coast. Reminders of its days as a working farm can be found in the carefully maintained barn, including stalls and antique farm equipment. The farm equipment is displayed in the barn with safety fencing to protect small curious visitors. Bicycles of all sizes, ping-pong, croquet, badminton and lawns large enough for soccer and baseball games will provide plenty of 'at home' activities. Cooking out can be on the deck or a short walk to grill on the rocks. Located on St. George Peninsula between the fishing villages of Tenants Harbor and Pt.Clyde, you are only a short distance from popular restaurants, kayaking, fishing, sailing, hiking, beaches, movie theaters, antique & novelty shops, Marshall Point Lighthouse, which was seen in the movie, Forrest Gump, and ferries to nearby scenic islands, such as Monhegan and Vinalhaven. In nearby Rockland, the Farnsworth Museum with its collection of Wyeth paintings , is well worth a visit. The farmhouse has 6 bedrooms, so there's plenty of room for family & friends. The dining room seats 10-12 for fun family dinners. The living room's lovely natural light make this a cozy room for quiet reading by the fireplace. A forced air furnace keeps you warm on cool Maine evenings. The back deck is just the place to begin your day, as you look across the hayfield to the ocean. Watch the local lobstermen as they check out their traps, then head into town to pick up fresh lobster for dinner. The farmhouse can be your base as you explore the beautiful state of Maine, including Acadia Park to the north and Freeport with infamous L.L.Bean's to the south. My family (mom, three kids, husband) stayed here for a week this past August and fell in love with this property. The farmhouse is exactly what it looks like online--it has been maintained over 100+ years without altering its character and charm--it has all modern conveniences you will need, but has been allowed to remain true to its original form. The property includes beautiful and extensive meadows, with a rocky shoreline (not for swimming, but there is a lovely swimming beach nearby). The house is roomy and provided each family member with their own space. There are many towns along the shoreline in this area that are not overly touristy and can be reached within a 45 minute-hour drive, and the proximity to Monhegan Island is a definite plus. We would definitely come stay here again.

If you’re considering renting the farmhouse you likely have the means to stay at many fine hotels and resorts. Those can be enjoyable. But, if you value relaxation, uniqueness, simpler times, history, and unspoiled nature, the farmhouse outshines any and likely all. Pretend it’s 1910 and a farmer, his wife and grown children are living at the house. The farm is actively providing for their sustenance. Investments have been made in apple trees, a garden and a hand pumped well. A horse drawn tractor is used daily to move large chunks of stone out of the field and unto the growing stone wall. Now, take “everything” away except the house, barn, and field. Clean everything up, repaint, but leave almost everything original. Non-muddled. Throw in some modern appliances. Put an old rowing dory in the barn and fill it with buoys. Put a basketball ball hoop in there as well for some fun. And then transport that whole scene to the here and now. That’s the farmhouse. Intriguing to just think on what all happened through the years. And yes, there’s magical paths through the hay field meandering down to the rocks and ocean. Sit there on the bench with the old tree just barely over your head and stare at the waves. Smell the mist. Who need reservations at Acadia? And then there’s all these neat fishing ports, restaurants, downtowns and unique sites to visit. Plus, there’s Wasses’s hotdogs up the road a ways! Read the other reviews to learn more. But this is why we enjoy staying at the Farm

Step into a blast from the past when you stay at this lovely old home, with land to roam, a huge barn equipped with recreation, a tree house, AND the ocean!! If you love old houses and Maine charm, you'll fall in love with this quiet getaway

We have just returned from another visit to our favorite getaway. Communicating with our host was a breeze. The farmhouse and barn are beautifully outfitted with comfortable furnishings, great appliances, kitchen staples, games, books, framed posters and other prints … and the flowers, apples, and, oh my, the wonderful fields leading down to the ocean. We love our time at the Lang’s farmhouse.

My husband and I enjoy places and spaces that provide elemental experiences - that enable us to feel close to the sights, sounds of nature, a minimum or complete absence of man-made sounds, a constant breeze and we got that and more at the Saltwater Farmhouse. We were grateful that the owners have not made the house fancy - that it felt welcoming, calm and serene. Every day we were treated to the beauty of goldenrod and Queen Anne's Lace dancing among eighty acres of grasses, the sounds of birds and crickets, the velvet air all around us and the immense privacy of being in an unpopulated area. Bathing in the outdoor shower was pure joy!
The house is well-furnished, pleasing to the eye and comfortable. Great linens, pillows and plenty of dishes and kitchen appliances.

When you use vacation rental services, you get good at reading reviews. But, 34 five star reviews spanning years (and one four star)? I wondered and was anxious to see what the fuss was about!
Now I know. Like others, we felt privileged to be there. The house is just right, just perfect. It's full of atmosphere and peace. How often do you find a print of a picture by a famous artist (NC Wyeth) on the kitchen wall, only to learn that it was of the back of the barn on the property? Though painted in 1939, the tree in the picture is still there and Maggie told me the cart in the picture is still in the barn.
There is nothing stuffy or pretentious about this house, but I defy you to not try to picture it as yours once you've stayed. Our whole group sighed one big happy sigh after our first days' exploration and agreed we all hoped to come back every year.
Astrid was wonderful when we had a few questions. Maggie's communication during the booking process was quick and clear. The area is breathtaking, gardens lush and well cared for (six gardeners descended one morning!), nice towels, cozy bed sheets and excellent mattresses.
We are smitten. It was a wonderful week and a wonderful house. Thank you from all 9 of us, Maggie and Jim!

Magical farmhouse
We absolutely love staying at the Lang's farmhouse. The house is both cozy and spacious and has all the creaks and noises that an old farmhouse should have. The barn is magical and such a wonderful place for our kids to play - they bike, shoot baskets, and just run. Lastly, walking on the path through the field to the ocean is calming and just lovely. We will be back again!

Our stay was beyond our expectations. Although there are many sites to visit, we were enchanted by our accommodations enjoying walks down the mown path to the ocean, playing games, enjoying the outdoor shower our trips away were few! We loved everything about the Farmhouse/Barn and gardens. We want to return.

Fabulous old farmhouse, beautifully equipped, spacious, tastefully decorated, delightful walk through wildflower fields to shore, private, peaceful, easy access to other sights/activities on the peninsula, only (small) complaint was that the recreational equipment was in bad shape, for example, all the basketballs were deflated,; no pump, ping pong table net broken, big collection of VHS movies but unplayable. Owners easily accessed and very responsive when contacted.

The house is a rambling, old farmhouse with lots of character and plenty of comfort, well-stocked with cookware, dishes and linens. The attached barn has a pingpong table and a basketball hoop which were much appreciated by the four boys in our group. The rocky shore is right there, at the end of a path through the meadow. I would love to go back another year.

We had a wonderful time at this tastefully furnished and beautiful big old farm house. From the farmhouse you take a luxurious 5 minute walk across the property to get to the classic Maine beach: beautiful, rocky shore where we brought drinks when the weather permitted and watched the waves and birds and saw an occasional seal. Nearby hikes, picture-perfect small towns, and on rainy days a fire in the fireplace, and the option of ping pong or (unbelievably) indoor basketball. The hosts were a real pleasure to deal with from beginning to end.

What a wonderful, magical place. Our family spent many joyful weeks at the Saltwater Farm. The daily walk to the ocean with its ever changing landscape was a delight. The town of Tenants Harbor was welcoming and charming. We thank the Lang family for opening their family home and giving our family a memorable Thanksgiving and Christmas during the pandemic. We all hope to return to the house and its barns where we held family basketball and ping pong tournaments, romped in the snow and watched the deer and the rafter of turkeys. Each day was a treasure. The bookshelf is full of delightful reads, great movies to choose from, well stocked kitchen and pantry, comfortable beds and living spaces, the list of delights is long. The farmhouse and its surroundings are an absolute treasure close to Rockland which has great shopping and a delicious bakery. Thank you!

Property - 5 starsHouse - 3 starsOwner - 3 starsProperty -- echoing other reviewers, this location and 80 acres is outstanding. We enjoyed many hours on the back deck looking out to the ocean and taking walks through the flower fields to the ocean. Kids had plenty of room to play, run around, and ride bikes. Parking was easy. Going down to the rocks on the beach was awesome and something we did regularly.House -- as an old farmhouse, our expectations were not of a brand new house, and little quirks are to be expected and are part of the charm. However, there were signs of deferred maintenance throughout, such as water stains and cracked plaster on ceilings, and much of the wood furniture had water spots and rings. We brought home lobster to cook and found a lobster pot, but had to spend 30 min scrubbing the nutcrackers of all the rust that was coming off on our hands before using them and giving to children. Several guests complained that although their bed sheets were clean, they had permanent stains. I should have read more closely that only 1 of the listed 3 bathrooms has a regular shower, which was a bit of a challenge for a larger group (note that the one shower head was also worn and the shower angle couldn't be adjusted so you have to stand directly under the showerhead). The listed 6th bedroom is not actually a bedroom but rather a staircase landing with 2 beds and a curtain for privacy -- it worked for our group with kids, but not what i expected.Owner -- owner required a lease to be signed off the VRBO platform, which is fine, but during Covid without access to the office i don't have a printer. Owner made no effort to provide an electronic solution, so i suggested she leave a printed copy of the lease for us to sign upon arrival. I never heard back until the day after we checked in, when the owner started reaching out again about the lease. Spending vacation time trying to find a solution for how to print or electronically sign a lease was not how i wanted to spend our first day, and would have expected the owner to find a solution for this issue rather than leaving it up to us to solve. Owner also asked for a pet deposit, which was fine, but said it was "too difficult" to do on the VRBO site and that i should send her a personal check, which i felt was unprofessional and was not comfortable with.

Perfect summer getaway
Lovely, comfortable, old-fashioned farmhouse, with outdoor spaces and comfortable chairs in which to read or lounge. A lovely field of wildflowers leads down to a rocky beach where you can while away the hours watching the waves roll in and rattle out over the pebbles. If you are a jogger, the soft path around the field is exactly one mile. As you trot along, you may see wild turkeys and ospreys. The views of the sparkling ocean are amazing and ever changing. Want a day trip? Venture over to Monhegan Island, a one-hour ferry ride away. The cliffs are stunning. The six members of our group couldn't have been happier here.

Just Perfect
If staying in a beautiful, peaceful farmhouse with sea green painted floors, graceful staircases, white curtains blowing in open windows with a meadow and the ocean beyond, walking down a beautiful wildflower path to a stony shore - different with every tide - with big rocks to sit on, a place to build a cloudy day fire, little creatures to admire in pools of water, sunsets and birds and porches to read on, a big dining room to gather in for dinners, comfortable beds in Jane Austen bedrooms is your thing - look no further. The farmhouse is 100% perfect and lovely.
The huge attached barn is like walking back in time - we played ping pong at night, our kids ran around playing tag constantly and produced their own version of Hamilton (tickets were free) in the largest room.
Thanks to Maggie for sharing this magical place, and to Astrid for making it so comfortable. We hope to return!

Great place for a Covid-19 quarantine vacation!
Our family loved it at the Saltwater Farm! We brought our own food so there was no reason to leave. Hikes on the rocky beach. Basketball in the barn. Bike riding on the private road. Thousands of fireflies at night. Bonfires on the beach. Lots of old movies and games. Smores in the fireplace. There was plenty to do and enjoy whether it was sunny or rainy. The house is well supplied and immaculate. Definitely recommend!

Lovely Home
You immediately feel right at home walking into Saltwater Farmhouse. Maggie is extremely attentive and made the entire renting experience very seamless. The property as well as the house is beautiful. Given we ate our meals at home, it was great to find how well equipped the kitchen was with everything one might need. We walked to the shore everyday, which is a stunning walk down a path from the house and a wonderful place to sit and read a book by the water.
I look forward to renting this property again in the future !

Family reunion
Third time staying at this awesome property, was just a wonderful setting for a family reunion, with comfortable beds for the 10 of us. House is very well cared for, immaculate, and very welcoming, and the kitchen had everything you could think of! Wonderful walks down to the shoreline, our dogs thought they were in heaven. First snow of the season, and the house was toasty warm and the fireplace was lovely! Thanks to the owners and property manager who keep this slice of history maintained and looking so good!

Old Maine Charm
This house is veryy comfortable with Old Maine charm., nice porches, a deck with a beautiful view of the ocean across a Andrew Wyeth looking field with wild turkeys, Osprey, butterflies, and flowers. The bedrooms are small but the living areas downstairs are wonderful and spacious. The barn is HUGE, and is a great hangout space for teenagers.

Just what we hoped for,
Six outdoor painting friends, a few spouses and other family matters making a total of 10 had a most wonderful time staying at this roomy and comfortable old farmhouse for a week in July, painting or biking during the day then gathering around the table for dinner every evening . Everything about the place pleased me, from the great supply of dishes in the beautiful old pantry to the vast meadow through which a path in mown down to the rocks and water. The barn was the perfect place for us painters to be able to spread out our gear at the end of every day. The area abounds with places to paint from the village of Port Clyde, to the lighthouse, to Monhegan Island, to the property ‘s grounds and the farmhouse itself ! If I can get my painting gang to come again from Minnesota and elsewhere I would love to come again next summer.
