About this house rental
Our classic (newly renovated - please see pics) beachfront cottage features a private path to the beach and a private dune deck right at the beach and is a block away from any public walks so the beach seems a little more private. My grandmother convinced my father to buy the house in 1964 from an old girlfriend who was trying to raise money to get her manuscripts published. The "ex"? She wrote the NY Times bestseller "Charleston" and went on to be selected by Margaret Mitchell's heirs to write the sequel to "Gone With the Wind"! We have pictures of the house and beach at different periods of our family's involvement. Everyone who enters breathes a sigh of relaxation because of the beautiful views and open layout that invites the constant breeze and sea air. We have retained all of the charming and necessary features for full beach enjoyment such as a large screened-in porch looking out over the ocean and the Charleston shipping channel with a comfortable sofa and chairs, a porch dining table with six chairs and room for more, and a hard to resist hammock. In addition, we have provided modern amenities such as Keurig coffee/cocoa/tea maker, wireless internet, Dish Satellite and Flat screen TVs. There is an additional television with DVD player in the downstairs teen hangout room. Of course there is central heating and air if there is not enough sea breeze to open up the two sets of new French doors and keep the house cool. Our favorite spots are the Pawley's Island Hammock on the full-house, screened-in porch (which we call the "front") facing the beach, the lounge chairs on the deck that face the beach, and the dune deck that allows you to perch above the rest of the beach goers and watch the surfers and ships. The full kitchen with new gas stove and powerful hood, and dining room make it so you never have to leave this great spot to eat. However, there are fabulous restaurants on the Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island in addition to the many in Charleston. It is a five-minute drive to Target and Towne Center, where there are boutiques, a movie theater, a Lowes, and a department store. There are dozens of highly rated golf courses within a 20-mile radius. All of the bedrooms have ceiling fans, blinds, functioning windows and screens to allow for the refreshing sea breeze. The HVAC system is new. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed, charming tile bathroom with shower, two closets, and TV (w/ Roku). The other two bedrooms on the main floor, twin and queen, have built-in dressers and full closets, and share a newly-renovated bathroom with shower and tub and brand new dual sinks and vanities and a back-lit 48 in. frameless fashion mirror. The first floor bedroom has twin beds, its own bathroom, and two showers adjacent to it. Downstairs is another den with TV and a futon/bunk bed perfect hang out for teens! Awesome property, location and host!

The host was very communicative even when there was an issue with the AC, the host had someone out to fix it right away. The house is a great location to enjoy the beach and the restaurants and bars nearby.

It was rustic which we liked, felt very homy

Good location, upstairs was fine, the basement was rough. It needs a lot of improvement and we did not use it. Not livable.

Property is exactly as described. Very clean and access to the beach was incredible! Stocked with plenty of beach chairs for the whole group. Devon was very responsive to questions. Would stay again!

We had an amazing time enjoying the huge screened in porch most of our stay. The kids fought over napping on the hammock. I loved taking my coffee out and listening to the waves.

Great location. Walk way to the beach in the backyard. Had a little dock to watch the sunset.

Loved our time here. The house (porch and common room in particular) is way bigger than pictures show. Plenty of room. Definitely rustic. The proximity to the beach was super convenient.

All and all, the house is just not up to VRBO standards; we have been renting in IOP since 2014 and have never come across the conditions we witnessed at this place. Yes, it's old and "vintage" but that does not give a free pass to having hazards and smelly and dirty conditions. (I am trying to attach photos of many of the these conditions)
The cutlery drawer almost fell out onto my feet -Hazard!
Patio was not swept or tables wiped off.
Walkway had multiple nails and boards sticking up - Hazard!
Debris around the yard, buckets, bottles.
Multiple windows could not be closed, locked, and/or stay open.
Drapery was super dusty and moldy.
Multiple electric outlets were unsecured - hazard!
Blinds could not be opened because sticks were broken.
Kitchen lighting was inadequate.
Lastly, but most importantly, was the moldy smell.
Bottom line is that everything should work, be clean, and not be a hazard.

The location of this property is perfect! We loved having our own private access to the beach. The house is old and shows some wear...or charm depending on how you look at it, but the listing is accurate. It is an easy walk to the shops in "town" and a quick drive to so many great restaurants or Charleston. The hosts were very kind and gave us some good suggestions of where to eat. We had a wonderful family get away!

Used for a family reunion of 10. Owner was very accommodating and easy to communicate with. Cozy private “beach cottage”.close to stores and playgrounds for the grand kids. Would definitely rent again !

This property is an great beach getaway for a multi-family group. As mentioned in other reviews, yes this property is dated and there are some maintenance issues you definitely noticed on your arrival. However, that comes with being an older beach house in a humid local near the ocean. So long as you rent knowing that in advance, you will not be disappointed.
We spent Thanksgiving here my my 3 siblings, their families, with my parents popping in for the day. It's been a long time since all 4 of us stayed in one place at the same time and we had a blast. It was great being able to walk over to the beach whenever we felt like it. And the small deck at the beach had benches with storage that includes all the buckets and things you wanted for kids in the sand.
We cooked up a huge Thanksgiving meal in the kitchen and there were plenty of pans and plates and everything you needed to serve a huge meal. The dining room table in the house and the round dining table on the porch made sure every one had a place to eat.
I have a back issue and getting in and out of some of the furniture was quite difficult as the chairs are pretty short. But I don't think most folks will have that same problem. The light switch in the hallway was difficult to turn off once it was on. But these were all very minor issues.
The satellite TV worked intermittently and we did end up using my brother's Roku hooked to the TV for part of our stay. But depending on the time of year, I don't imagine most folks would want to use the TV much given the beach is right there. It worked great on Wednesday and Friday, but it kept flaking out during the Macy's Thanksgiving parade.
Checking out was a breeze. My family helped us clean up the kitchen after Turkey festivities so on our check out day, we just had a few stray dishes to put in the dishwasher to run. The only other instructions were to strip the beds, we left the towels in the bathroom tubs like in a hotel, and took out the trash.
I would definitely recommend this house to anyone who is looking forward to beach stay who is OK with not having the most modern, up to date feel. To me, the most important aspects was it was CLEAN and everything worked. And the host was very responsive to our questions (mainly about the TV - no there was nothing major to even ask about).
This was my first time every renting via VRBO and I would rent again.

Our group had a great time. Where can you get a space this big, beachfront, for the price? As a retired Realtor, I can say that I see more than the average person. We were charmed by the homey rustic feel. Structurally there were mold-related health concerns with this house and the mold covered HVAC vents dripped moisture onto couches and floors without reprieve. If you have respiratory issues, you should think twice. We kept homeopathic airborne remedies activated throughout the house to offset our concerns. Communication with homeowner were prompt and friendly, but with concern to the mold, the alleged excuse from their HVAC tech is false information (mold stops at the vent) Its kind of funny, no, mold is airborne and is in the dripping water from the vents. Hopefully they get this repaired because it has clearly been a long standing issue.

The property is an old beach house that showed its age but was clean and well stocked. The owner knew we were bringing 3 small boys and had toys waiting for them. Beach chairs and beach toys were the hit. The owner was so nice and receptive to all of our inquiries and concerns before we got there and reached out to check on our stay and offered to do anything we needed. If you’re looking for a fancy modern house look elsewhere but if you’re looking for a house with great porches and sitting areas this is the house you need to consider. Again it’s an older house but if you can overlook that book a stay here.

We arrived to a house that had not been cleaned, sheets and towels on the floors, we had asked for early check in and told the cleaning crew needed the whole time but the owner never arranged for the cleaning service. Someone arrived later that evening to clean the bathrooms but we had already done the wash and made the beds. The mildew/mold downstairs was significant ( no A/C had been running downstairs). Stairs were broken and missing boards outside, I had expected "deferred maintenance" and was prepared with tools to fix these simple repairs. The second day the hallway toilet stopped working, the owner was attentive and got a plumber out quickly. That evening on the screened porch during a rain storm we saw significant rain coming down the walls and when we went downstairs we saw an inch of standing water that was rising fast. The owner once again was attentive and had a crew out to deal with the water but we had to pack up and move out. Ultimately we got a complete refund.

The house length screen porch on the ocean side complete with large hammock was our nirvana. Beautiful views, relaxing ocean sounds, great meals and many family games occurred on that porch for the 6 of us. Oh. And there were 3 bedrooms upstairs, 2 downstairs and a daybed in the family room if you want to waste your time sleeping when you have an ocean in your backyard...lol! The house is old and has many signs of age as previously mentioned but everything that is needed for a wonderful vacation works. We will definitely return!

Location to the ocean was great, house needs so much love and attention. Everything was old, musty, falling apart. Could not use the lower level due to the excess mold and mildew stench. Could not gain access on arrival date, no response from the owner, both by phone and VRBO messaging. They never contacted us the whole weekend. There are 2 access codes, one they give you, one is inside on a typed message (in a broken frame) on the wall. We read another review as we were waiting to hear back on access, that they had the same experience and told how to get in, which we did. Basically pushed open the French deck doors, as they were so loose, a child could have done it.
I contacted them the day before check out to see if we could do late check out, they never called me back, instead send a VRBO email (which I did not see until two days after check out). They were in Spain, and "thought" they would get any messages we sent. Clearly NOT a good strategy, when you are a rental owner and have guests coming.
We met the cleaning people and just stayed out of their way.
This property is WAY OVER PRICED for what it is, just a run down OLD beach house. I would not suggest renting it EVER. I think VRBO should take it off their site, personally.

That feeling you get when you finally get to your destination and you can breathe a sigh of relief because it is vacation, you will not get when you initially drive up to this house. The neighborhood is beautiful but this house is really a beach shack with a broken window on the base floor and torn screens in the front. The deck in the back has some boards sticking up along with the dock path to the beach, you definitely want to wear some kind of shoe and walk carefully. The screened porch is fantastic and we spent a lot of time there enjoying the breeze and view. There is as many beds as it says but the larger room (den) in the basement was very hot even with the window air conditioning unit. My husband and I slept in the other room in the basement and it was comfortable enough, though his legs did hang off the end of the bed. The main area of the house has vents that drip, the ceiling does not look pleasant, and the furniture is not in good condition making it very uncomfortable but usable. There was two humidifiers in the basement and we ended up bringing one upstairs which helped with the damp, musty smell. The bedrooms in the main house are old and not in the best condition but we all slept ok on them. If you have back issues, it could be a problem. Everything in the kitchen worked fine and it contained all that you would need. The house was clean, all the showers worked great, and there was plenty of towels. Overall, the house is affordable but old and in need of a lot of love and care. The location and price makes it worth the consideration.

I grew up in Charleston and after I moved away I would stay with my grandmother when I came to visit, until she passed away some years ago. After that it was hotels, but staying at this property I felt like I was back home at grandma's house again. The house was very clean and tidy and equipped with everything we needed for our stay. The location right on the beach was perfect with its own beach access and plenty of parking. The home not only has a lovely screened porch but a deck out on the dunes as well for enjoying the sights and sounds of the shore. It is not a cookie-cutter resort condo but an original beach house with a charming home sweet home feel. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to be back again!
