FABULOUS 6BD - 6BA VILLA WITH STUNNING POOL & VIEWS IN TOP CHIANTI LOCATION!
About this villa rental
Nestled in Castellina in Chianti, this attractive villa for R 21,827 per night is a fantastic choice for your next trip. Set in the heart of the magical Chianti Classico region, this wonderful 6 BD – 6 BA Villa dates back to the 15th century and is strategically located with a short distance from the lively village of Castellina in Chianti. Surrounded by an exceptionally beautiful landscape, the property is perfect to enjoy relaxing time with family & friends and caters to those who are ready to mix relaxation with the exploration of the most fabulous places in Tuscany! About the property. The property has been within the family of the current owners for 4 generations. It includes three houses out of the five that make a tiny borough called Sommavilla, an ancient settlement dating back to the 15th century. The main villa is the oldest of the whole borough and was run by friars back in the centuries: it served as an inn on the ancient path between Chianti's main villages of Castellina in Chianti and Radda in Chianti, where travelers could stop by and get supplies for themselves and their horses. With a total surface of approx. 4500 sq.f. the villa comes with a total of 6 bedrooms (named after their colors) and 6 bathrooms. There is also a large billiard room, three living rooms, a large wine collection and a spectacular room in the cellar, featuring some impressive and mysterious antique graffiti designs all over its walls. Set within 50 hectares of land, the property features a vast terrace garden with a beautiful swimming pool (23x46 ft.), strategically built over an embankment overlooking the estate's olive groves, vineyards and woods. The stunning views from the villa and its garden are absolutely unparalleled: no signs of civilization can be spotted apart from the historical village of San Polo in Rosso in the far distance and the imposing Castle of Brolio further away. The property’s private land offers several tracks that allow for beautiful walks in the woods, where deers and hares can be easily spotted. A large aviary, where several species of exotic pheasants are bred (such as the Lady Amherst, the crested fireback and the silver pheasants) can be admired from the private garden. The second house on the estate is a converted farmhouse and serves as the villa’s laundry facility. While the third house is an old barn, used as a garage for the estate’s machinery. The location. The estate is located just about 5 minutes away by car from the beautiful village of Castellina in Chianti, one of the oldest and best preserved places within the Chianti Classico territory. From the villa it is also possible to reach Castellina on foot, by taking an easy path through the woods (abt. 30 minutes walk). Siena can be reached in just about 30 minutes by car (17 miles), while Florence can be reached within abt. a 40 minutes drive (26 miles). Castellina in Chianti offers a wide selection of great wineries, restaurants, markets and shops. Monteriggioni and San Gimignano are both famous for their tower-spiked walls and can be easily reached from the property. Famous piazzas, historic churches, ancient castles and renowned museums in Florence and Siena are all within easy reach as well. The village of Radda in Chianti is just about 10 minutes away, hosting Rampini, one of the area's best ceramics houses. The Chianti region is stunning throughout the year and each season offers truly unforgettable memories, while touring the historic wine cellars and enjoying the tasting of several wonderful local wines… Strolling through the quaint streets and piazzas of the many little towns in Chianti and visiting the fresh food markets to find just the right ingredients to accompany a new bottle of wine is definitely a must! The pool area. The swimming pool is located at the far end of the villa’s garden so to guarantee peace and quiet for the guests resting inside the house at daytime. There are two showers (indoor and outdoor), as well as a changing room and a bathroom. The pool is surrounded by shaded areas with comfortable deck chairs as well as a solarium with sun loungers. There is a stone barbecue in the area as well as a dining table for up to 14 guests (strategically located under a large laurel bush, providing a fresh spot in the hot summer days). Another stone barbecue is located in the garden next to a more intimate Virginia creeper covered pergola with a stone and wrought iron table that can accommodate 8 people. The Layout. The main Villa spreads over 3 floors and comes with a total of 6 bedrooms/6 bathrooms, so to comfortably accommodate a total of 13 guests. Ground floor: - Two dining rooms: o The first (directly connected to the kitchen) can accommodate up to 8 people and comes with an old “pietra serena” fireplace, perfectly suitable for cooking on the grill (featuring a vast collection of old copper kitchen tools and three rattan chaise longues to enjoy the fireplace). If you really want to know what it is like to live in Tuscany, this is the villa for you. The descriptions on the listing are accurate but do not tell the entire story. You feel completely at home - the Villa is charming and the surrounding vineyards and olive trees complete the beautiful landscape. The lovely town of Castellina is a short distance away and all the villages you might want to visit, including Siena and San Gimignano, are an easy drive. You can completely relax here, so much so that some days we didn't want to leave.
Stefano, the owner, and his staff were easy to work with, always available and completely responsive to whatever we needed (Including giving us fresh eggs one day when we ran out). There is a housekeeper and maintenance worker that live on the property but we never saw them unless we called them for something.
The Villa has been in Stefano's family for 4 generations and if you get the chance, definitely plan to visit with him. He is a really interesting guy and more than willing to share the history of the property and show you the hidden areas you might overlook - the lovely chapel on the property, the underground wine cellar and the secret room in the basement.
We have stayed at luxury resorts in Tuscany before but now we feel like we've seen the real Tuscany.

We stayed at Sommavilla for a week in October 2022, accompanied by our two post-college age children and four of their friends. It was an absolutely magical experience. The location is unimaginably beautiful; as far as the eye can see, there is nothing but olive groves, vineyards and forested hills. The 16th century house is set in lushly landscaped grounds, with a beautiful pool, stone paths leading to smaller gardens, and intimate seating areas for coffee or a meal. The home also has two patios, so you can basically be outdoors all of the time.
Inside, the house is authentic to its period, with tiled stone floors, carved wood chests and other antique furniture, large fireplaces in most rooms (though decorative only, as municipals laws restrict use to wintertime), and a huge, fascinating display of Chianti wines. The kitchen is fully equipped, though the appliances are not modern. There are enough bedrooms for many guests, each with a different color and character. Everyone in our group loved their rooms. Sommavilla excels in authenticity and charm; conversely, travelers should not expect the modern furnishings or amenities of a luxury hotel.
The home’s location is a huge plus: it is just a couple of miles to the enchanting town of Castellina in Chianti, which has many excellent restaurants, bakeries, and a Coop grocery store. We regularly did early-morning cappuccino and pastry runs, and after long days of adventure, we lingered over sumptuous meals at the local restaurants. Sommavilla’s location provides an excellent base for exploring Chianti, Siena, San Gimignano and other adjacent areas in Tuscany. We also biked on 5 days through spectacular countryside and picture-perfect Tuscan towns, using local shops that provide e-bikes (it’s very hilly, so think twice before renting a regular bike!), fabulous downloadable routes and, if desired, guides. There is a reason this part of Tuscany is such a popular destination.
Stefano is a most warm and gracious host. We really enjoyed our conversations with him, he was always responsive to questions, and he gave great restaurant advice. Luckily he was available one night to join us for dinner in Castellina, as he is a most engaging dinner partner.
We would go back to stay at Sommavilla in a heartbeat for all the above reasons.

We secured this reservation almost 3 years ago, but, because of COVID, postponed it twice until we decided we were coming this year come hell or high water. Stefano was very gracious in allowing us to defer until we felt safe traveling. I can’t imagine a more perfect location. Castellina in Chianti is a very nice little village with lots of great spots to eat, drink, stroll and people watch without all the crowds of the more well known towns. It was also centrally located so that we could drive to Siena, Greve, San Giminagno, even Florence if we chose. We had a rental car, which I recommend, but you have to enjoy driving hilly roads with lots of switchbacks. I found it exhilarating, but it’s not for the faint of heart. There is a beautiful pool with breathtaking views.
As beautiful as the villa is, it does show its age a little, which is the only reason it didn’t get 5 stars across the board. It’s not the Ritz, but if you’re okay with shabby chic, it’s very nice. The furniture is a little worn and tired, but comfortable. This was written by a guy. The women in our group would not have been so kind. We left with fantastic memories. I hope this helps.

A beautiful house with so much character with amazing views! We loved sitting on the veranda, it was a beautiful atmosphere and as long as the weather was good, we had our meals there. It was plenty of space for 9 of us. The town is only a few minute drive and has restaurants, shops, gelato, and a grocery store. Everyone is very helpful and friendly. We hired the recommended chef for a dinner and it was wonderful! If you plan to leave the house, rental cars or a daily car service is a must. It's worth driving around exploring all the towns in the area. The driveway is steep and a little intimidating, but our cars handled it fine, even in rainy weather.
It was a lovely stay and would recommend it to everyone!

Our family of 13 (7 adults and 6 children, ages 5-15) spent a week at this beautiful Villa and we all loved it! It was the perfect place for a week of relaxation with a few planned activities after days in Rome and Venice. Stefano was very responsive and Josefa and her husband took care of all our needs in a very timely manner. We are all cooks and as my daughter said, the kitchen was a cook's dream! It was so well appointed that we cooked in most nights. The children even prepared dinner one evening! I can't say enough about the villa with all its amenities, the billiard room, the pool and all the common areas indoors and outside. The grounds were lovely as well! Also, we have stayed in quite a few Vrbo's and I have never seen a guest information book that was so comprehensive! It was a vacation we will never forget! Thank you!!

We took our kids and grandkids, 10 in all, to spend a week in Italy, planning to spend the entire time in Tuscany. This was a fantastic place for us. The home, an ancient villa beautifully maintained and very rustic, worked perfectly for us. We were able to venture out easily from there, but also to stay home and enjoy an amazing, huge pool on the hot days as Europe was in the grip of a heat wave during our stay. The town of Castellina in Chianti was only minutes away and had some good restaurants. Stefano was only a text away if we had any questions and the caretaker Josefina was wonderful to us. We had her prepare a Tuscan meal for us on our first night that was excellent, and we had leftovers to snack on for the rest of the week. Sommavilla met and exceeded all of our expectations.

We loved our stay at Sommavilla. The villa is full of interesting rooms and antiques but has modern conveniences. We spent almost every evening on the terrace overlooking the rolling hills. Josefa, the caretaker, made three wonderful meals for us. She set the table beautifully and made us feel very pampered. The grounds of the villa are gorgeous with stone walls and walkways, fruit trees and flowering shrubs. The pool is large with plenty of seating and beach towels. The villa is just a few minutes from Castellina, which is a charming village with plenty of restaurants and shopping. It was just how we imagined an Italian village to be with people sitting in the town square or visiting in front of the shops. People were friendly and helpful. The location of the villa is perfect for day trips to Florence, Siena, and many villages in the area. It was truly a trip of a lifetime for us. Thank you, Stefano, for sharing your beautiful property and letting me feed the chickens!😊

The Villa and its surrounding views are stunning. The nearby village is right out of Under the Tuscan Sun. All the villagers and merchants were wonderful. Stefani Pitigliani was a wonderful host. We would definitely stay at his Villa again.

The villa is lovely, our picture perfect Tuscan experience. The location is great, especially if you're looking to stop by some wineries. The villa was well stocked with kitchen basics, soap and toilet paper. Beautiful grounds for a stroll. Staff and Stefano were incredibly easy to communicate with, very friendly and helpful. Bonus points for the sweet puppies that let us pet them through the fence :) Would recommend to everyone!

This villa is beautiful and grand. There is plenty of indoor space for a large family for a vacation - you wouldn't need to worry about being cramped at all. It's very rustic and feels authentic with the decor.
The gardens/pool/entire out door property is definitely the best thing about the space - so wonderful. It's really an ideal place to be with a family for a vacation and the nearby town is very cute to visit for dinner or supplies. The villa caretaker Josepha is very nice and helpful and made sure the place was cleaned for us.
My only critique of the villa is that it was lacking in basic supplies for a hotel/bnb/rental space. There were only 6 of us staying which is under the capacity and had to buy additional toilet paper as each washroom only had 2 rolls for an entire weeks stay, to add, non of the washrooms had any of the basics like shampoo, or body soap. Even the sink soap dispensers had watered down soap in them. While the kitchen is stocked with cutlery, plates etc, it's lacking some of the other basics like teabags, oil and dishsoap. These are just the basics you expect for any accommodation and for something this pricey, it was disappointing those things weren't provided. It would be the perfect experience if these things and the small extra touches were provided for guests.

I stayed at Sommavilla with my husband and 3 other couples in July. I cannot say enough amazing things about this villa. The home and property were both so beautiful, and the pool was incredible!
The house is amazing and has absolutely everything you could need. There is a large terrace with beautiful views of the tuscan hills - we spent most nights and many meals out on this terrace.
The pool is so spectacular that we never wanted to leave the property.
Stefano was amazing to deal with - always so responsive with our questions and gave amazing recommendations for Tuscany.
Josefa, who takes care of the property with her husband, cooked us two amazing meals.
We hired Alessio Sedran, a private chef recommended by Stefano - the meal was amazing and he was a pleasure to deal with.
Overall, the 5 days we spent here were some of the best days of our entire trip to Italy. This property is so special and I cannot wait to come back!

We had a great family vacation in Sommavilla. The layout is perfect for a family, with space between the bedrooms for privacy. The bathrooms are functional, but do not expect luxury. The panels of the shower stall are falling off and the liquid soap is nonexistent. The best part is the pool and the nice terrace..So much for the positive..Prepare yourself to brew the coffee for an hour, the coffeemaker is old and plugged..Have to buy your own toilet paper, garbage bags, soap etc..There is only one key to the villa, which is very inconvenient with 12 people living in it.You have to have the key with you at all times, since the door slams closed by wind or just by mistake and you are locked out ( it happened to us upon arrival, since nobody explained the way the door works). We stayed for 2 hours outside with nobody to help us. The caregiver was not home and would not answer her cellphone. Also, DO NOT BOOK THE PRIVATE CHEF! We had paid a deposit and ordered the menu, but the "renowned chef" Alessio Sedran DID NOT SHOW UP without any notification. He simply sent 2 girls with some products that they cooked for2-3 hours in the kitchen. Our celebration dinner was scheduled for 7.30, but happened at 9.30..Thank god for the nice wine we had bought beforehand..The price was very high and although he did not show up, there was no compensation offered..Very bitter taste in our mouths..

Spectacular experience!
Sommavilla was a trip of a lifetime for me and my family of 13. Stefano was an excellent host and met all our needs. The property is superb and Josepha who oversees it is a gem. The pool and exterior areas are impeccably maintained and the home well-stocked for all eventualities. We hired chefs for a few meals with pasta making lessons secured through the owner. Francesca and Guilia were amazing and helped us make life-long memories in the kitchen and dining areas. Josepha made us a fabulous meal as well one night. We had 9 adults, 2 children (4 & 6 years) and 2 babies. Everyone was well-situated in the rooms and baths. The town of Castellina is quaint and so close (7 min by car 40-45 min walk if you don’t take a shortcut that was unavailable) and was among our favourites in Tuscany. If you are lucky to have the weather we did the pool area is fabulous family time under the Tuscan sun. Driving in the area was straightforward to visit other towns and parking reasonable but required advanced planning to avoid the ZTL restricted areas. Lots of details provided by Stefano significantly enhance the stay! Read them carefully! All in all a wonderful place to stay!

An amazing centuries old property - full of character and charming location
We had a great stay this summer, day trips to Siena, Florence and other towns along with lazy afternoons by the pool. Josefa cooked us some excellent meals which we are outside on the deck and we had fun adult dinners out while the kids played at home with awesome babysitters we found through Stefano. This is a vacation that I will remember!

Beautiful villa to share with friends and family
We just enjoyed a week of tranquility at Sommavilla. The best part of the home is the expansive deck overlooking the olive trees and vineyards. Each morning, we would enjoy an espresso and watch the deer. Each night, we would sit with our glass of wine and enjoy the stars. The pool is wonderful and refreshing. Plenty of lounge chairs and towels. All of the bedrooms have terrific air conditioning. Josefa, the housekeeper, made us a lovely Tuscan dinner on our first night. She also went grocery shopping for us and stocked the kitchen with everything we would need for the week. The location is great for exploring the Chianti area. Castellina in Chianti is a charming town (only 5 minutes away) with so much character and delicious restaurants. We enjoyed everything about Sommavilla. Stefano, the owner, provides you with a list of recommendations and important information about the villa and also about surrounding areas. We used it quite a bit and were always pleased with his recommendations. Stefano also recommended a private chef to come to the villa, Alessio Sedran. We had an amazing dinner from Alessio one evening as well. Stefano, thank you again for sharing your family's home with us. We are so grateful that we got to enjoy it and look forward to coming back again.

Incredible property! Special, beautiful and much loved villa
Our stay at Sommavilla was incredible. It exceeded our expectations. Stefano was an amazing host and ensured our every need was met with access to amazing tour guides, drivers and chefs. The house was magical. Our group of 12 fell in love. Our 4 children loved the pool and hidden bedroom. The view all over the property from every room was magical. We had dinner on the terrace, by the pool using the charcoal BBQ, we had drinks in the billiards room and sunned ourselves on deck chairs. Nothing was overlooked and we felt so at home. Stefano you made our trip to Tuscany. We will be back to stay at your beautiful home again. Thank you.

Wonderful stay in Tuscany
We could not have picked a better place to spend time with family in Tuscany. Beautifully maintained villa and grounds provided everything we were looking for and more. Close walk/drive to Castellina in Chianti and close enough for easy trips to Rodda, Siena and San Gimignano. The owner was very responsive to all of our requests and provided great recommendations for sights, restaurants, etc.

Magical property, beautiful surroundings and excellent service
A small piece of heaven in Somavilla. Beautiful villa where our party of nine celebrated a milestone birthday. Villa well loved and cared for for many generations, both owner and caretaker accessible and attentive ,answering any questions and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Rooms spacious and charming. So many beautiful outdoor areas on grounds to enjoy nice meals , tuscan wines and the beautiful surroundings. Picked tomatoes on property and prepared bruschetta de pomodoro . Villa offered peaceful privacy yet only a 30 min walk to nearby town of Chianti de Castellina. Could not recommend more highly, hope to return.

Heavenly piece of paradise in chianti
We had a 14 person family reunion in the house. Stefanno and his mother who greeted us could not have been nicer and more helpful before and during the stay. They've provided us with all the resources needed to enjoy the area. Apart from it, this is the NICEST house i have ever stayed in. Its private, located in a vineyard overlooking the tuscan hills, incredible pool, amazing decor and preserved since the 15th century. The house has magical views from multiple terraces and the vistas are incredible. The town nearby, Castellina, is gorgeous and the location is central to all major chianti areas. There is a kiwi and fig trees next to a ping pong table outdoors, as well as a huge cellar with a large pool table and views to die for. This is the BEST bang for anyones buck- i would like to return there multiple times!

Amazing!!
We loved our stay at Sommavilla! The Villa is historic and beautiful, the views are stunning; and the location is perfect for exploring the region. We were a family/friends group of 9 adults and 2 children. It was perfect for us. The host is wonderful as well! Professional, kind, extremely helpful. I hope we can go back some day. It was exactly what I wanted our stay in Tuscany to be. Treat yourself to a stay here, you will not be disappointed!

A truly authentic Tuscan villa
We had a lovely stay. Arrival was easy and Josefa was there to welcome us and show us around. She also was available to help and she and her husband came in to clean the house 2 Times in our 9 day stay. The kitchen is incredibly well equipped with every possible pot, pan, blender, coffee maker and anything else you might hope to find. The bedrooms are all well appointed with air conditioning that works so well you might wake up at night to turn it off. A luxury in Italy are screens on the windows, and this home has a screen on every window which enables you to enjoy the sounds and smells
Of the beautiful Tuscan countryside without worrying about the tiger mosquitoes which plague much of the region. We had the misfortune of suffering the after effects of a Marvelous and beautiful electrical storm which left parts of the town without phone lines. Sadly we were without access to the internet which for us was problematic as my husband works remotely when we travel and his cell had no consistent reception. Stefano made himself available to try to troubleshoot the problem, driving to see it himself the same day he returned from holidays to try to fix it. When there was no apparent fix, he immediately drove into Siena to purchase a portable router so that we had access to internet for work. Not only was he incredibly kind, he did everything in his power to make our stay comfortable. The pool is exquisite and we only wish we had let ourselves spend more time by it. A beautiful historic family home in the heart of chianti not to be missed. Also, Castellina is a gorgeous little town with amazing little shops and artisan galleries. Don't miss the gelato, and be sure to try the Cremino which we went back for everyday. A perfect setting to enjoy the bell far niente.

Beautiful, rustic 15th century villa just outside a charming small Tuscan village
We loved our stay at Sommavilla in Castellina in Chianti. This villa retains its rustic, old world charm with modern conveniences with updated bathrooms, kitchen and separate laundry house. The decor takes you back in time. The views are amazing and the pool was a sparkling oasis -- especially for the children after a long day of "suffering" through visiting the surrounding villages, shopping, eating, drinking local wines, etc. The small village of Castellina in Chianti is very charming and has a well-stocked small Coop grocery store, butcher, several wine shops and great restaurants. It's a great little gem to retreat too after the bustle of larger, more famous nearby tourist spots like Siena, San Gimignano, etc.
Be advised that as our host Stefano warned us (but we still overlooked), you cannot find the villa using a street address on Google or other maps. Use the coordinates Stefano will give you and it's easy to find. Also, the gravel driveway is approx 300 m long and the last half is quite rocky, bumpy and steep. However, our large 9-passenger Renault van handled it easy, so any normal-sized car will be fine too. Just expect a bumpy ride.
Be aware that the AC is good and cold, but just in the bedrooms. This might be a bit more concern to my fellow Americans who are more accustomed to whole-home AC blasting all summer. Regardless, we all slept well, even if the beds are somewhat firm -- again more customary in Europe, I think, whereas we Americans generally are used to more plush-top mattresses.
There are 2 wi-fi routers on the first floor. They appear modern but have very limited range. I think this is due to the size and thickness of the massive construction of this ancient villa-- not sure any signal can penetrate too far through these walls. But the range is limited to the common living areas and not upstairs nor outside at all.
Overall this is a beautiful, ancient 15th century villa into the heart of Tuscany. Our host, Stefano, has clearly treasured this villa which has been in his family for 4 generations. Staying here was truly a memorable experience for our group of 4 adults and 5 children (with lots of room to spare). What you might give up by not staying in a modern hotel or B&B will be well- compensated by the unique charms of this gorgeous old villa.

FABULOUS HOLIDAY!
We were lucky enough to stay at Sommavilla in May with our party of 10. The villa is incredible and set in the most breathtaking countryside. We had planned to make some visits to Siena and San Gimignano but in the end we only made it to Florence, we just didn't want to be anywhere else but the villa! We did get to visit some great local wineries and strolled most days to Castellina in Chianti..the beauty of the countryside around us was hard to believe and so peaceful.
The villa itself was the perfect size so everyone could do their own thing but one of the highlights has to be the wonderful pool!! The kids had an absolutely ball too running around outside in the (very well maintained) garden which gave the adults plenty of time to really relax! We would spend the evenings on the terrace - al fresco dining and sipping wine, what more could you wish for? The owner had thought of everything and all our requests were met with real efficiency and grace - not always easy with a party of 10!
Thank you so much for such a wonderful stay, we will be talking about Sommavilla for years to come.
