There were 11 of us and to the person -- ages 4 to 70 -- we were thoroughly enchanted by Natascha's property. The house was spacious and equipped with everything we needed for a well-fed, active family vacation. I even made crab cakes from a recipe leaned up against a bulletin board off the kitchen. The scenery was pure Maine and even the guys who mowed the grass (Terry's one) were extraordinarily nice. Some nights we ate at restaurants just a few miles away in Southwest Harbor or at The Ketch in Bass Harbor. Archie's was a favorite. Others we fixed seafood recipes in the kitchen or on one of Natascha's grills. Days we hiked, kayaked (using Natascha's kayaks), rode bikes at Acadia, or just hung out reading on the marvelous wrap-around porch. If anything, the photos with Natascha's VRBO don't do the place justice. Even the Lobster Cottage, where Katy and I stayed, was nestled in privacy and was spacious and just as quaint as the main house. So, yes, I give it a 5-star without any reluctance. I hope we one day return.

The property and homes are even better than described and shown in pictures. It’s a wonder location that is convenient to everything and yet quiet enough that you feel like you’re isolated from everything. Southwest harbor is super close and had everything needed for supplies and restaurants. Archie’s down the road was amazing for food and young kid entertainment. I would highly recommend this wonderful property and the owners who were readily available for anything.

We could not have been more happy with our stay. It was our first time to MDI and are so happy we decided to stay on the Quiet Side.
All the kids (age 8-13) agreed kayaking in bass harbor was the best part of the trip. The adults loved it too. We even kayaked as a group over to Archie’s for a lobster lunch!
All the books and guides in the house were so helpful in planning our adventures each day. The washer and dryer were great and 2 fridges a definite plus! Plenty of room for us to hang out together around the big dining table, on the porch, making fires outside each night and playing games in the yard.
We loved the hiking: Gorham Mt trail, Acadia Mountain, Jordan House Pond and many more! Our favorite dinner spots were Beal’s Lobster Pound, Archie’s and Copitas.

Our large family loved our stay at Summah Rye. We rented the Maine House and Lobster Cottage, and together they provided a great set up for our group. The Maine House is spacious, comfortable, and well equipped. The kitchen and dining area offered plenty of room to cook and eat with a large group, which we really appreciated. The Lobster Cottage is cozy, light and bright, and was an amazing extra space for us. The very large lawn was perfect for games (croquet and bocce!), and we made good use of the fire pit area. The yard slopes down to the beautiful waterfront, and we had a wonderful time kayaking. (For us it didn’t seem like the easiest place to swim, but there are lots of good places to swim nearby.) We absolutely loved the peacefulness of the property, and the easy access to Southwest Harbor, hiking trails, Echo Lake, and the soft serve stand! Just a great spot! Thank you Natascha!

Superb family vacation spot
Summah Rye is a well furnished cottage for a family gathering: open living/dining area with bedrooms/bathrooms for our children and young grandchildren, games and puzzles provided, kayaks and lifejackets, large inviting lawn sloping down to the harbor, house surrounded by a roof covered porch/deck so that children could play outside during occasional rainy time. We enjoyed being in the Bass Harbor area to explore familiar trails nearby plus ferry to Cranberry Island as well to expand our adventures. We recommend the cottage, location and ease of communication with owner.

Absolute Gem
Our four generations enjoyed the most wonderful week at Summah Rye. Our family has been coming to the Seawall area for 60+ years and this by far was our favorite rental. The home is so well stocked, and the quality and love put into this home is obvious. We are so grateful to the owners for sharing this wonderful property with us. I'm afraid to share how wonderful it was so it doesn't get all booked up, as we will definitely look to rent here first. This is an absolute gem.

Having read all the good reviews before arrival, we were still pleasantly surprised by what we saw at Summah Rye. Every room is spacious with its own full bathroom. Everything is clean and well organized. There are plenty of games and books, and lots of toys for MANY kids. The living room is full of lovely decorations. The dining table is good for 12 people. A big basement with a flatscreen TV is perfect for us to watch Luca with kids. This is just the inside.
Outside there is a big all-around deck, and big lawns extending to the beach, where 6 kayaks are inviting you for a voyage into the bay. Life jackets and paddles are in the basement.
The house is located on the "quiet side" of the MDI, which is close to the Sea Wall and Wonderland of the Acadia NP, and Echo Lake and Long Pond. Lots of fun activities.
We are already planning on going back.

A great house with room for 6 adults and 4 children aged 10, 6, 5, and 3. A family group.
A beautiful location with lots to do. Kayaking on Long Pond , swimming at Echo Lake (both about 15 minutes away). Hiking at Wonderland (an easy hike with the kids & close). Also saw the Bass Harbor lighthouse. (May have to wait a bit to park, but worth it), and Seawall. Both around 15 minutes away. Also took a 2 hour tourist boat ride which was very nice.
And of course beautiful Acadia National Park! Stunning views everywhere! Drove up Cadillac Mountain ( need reservations for a timed entry. And Thunder Hole is worth a look.
Had a couple nice meals at the Seafood Ketch
( just around the corner), and the Upper Deck in Bass Harbor. Both very accommodating for 4 kids and 6 adults.
Had no issues with the house at all. Talked to Natascha a few times prior to our trip and she was great! And the weather was gorgeous!
All in all a wonderful home in a beautiful location and we hope to return!

Wonderful Place & Location
This is a wonderful place for families who want to experience Acadia. You are within a 30 minute drive to all National Park attractions, yet are based away from the touristy bustle of Bar Harbor and other busier parts of the island. You would be surprised at how many wonderful, hikes, water spots and attractions are located on this side of the island.
We came with a multigenerational group of 13, celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary and having visited Acadia for most all of those 50 years. The house is represented well on the website. In reality, I don 't think that the pictures do it justice. The kitchen and eating area was great for our family of 13. They could use another couch in the main floor area and they noted that they are working on expanding the basement into a more usable, family friendly space. I would also suggest that they upgrade the outdoor grill to either a gas one or at least something larger and more substantial.
The outdoor spaces were great--wonderful porch, great yard for games and nice waterfront for viewing and easy launch of kayaks or small boat. The tide change is significant, so you need to time your kayaking to 2 hours either side of high tide (you can go out and come in outside of this, but will have to drag across the mud-bring water shoes!). It is a beautiful harbor with plenty of places to explore!
The home was very nicely appointed with everything you could possibly need and the owners were very accessible, answering all of our pre-trip questions.
We would highly recommend this property!!!!

Truly Awesome Vacation
This house is amazing! It’s perfectly located on the quieter side of the island and right on the water of Bass Harbor. We had three families come together and the place was just right. Plenty of room inside and out, decorated with charm, and it comes with everything. The wrap around porch was just perfect for relaxing in the evening after a long day of Acadia adventures. The kids loved the kayaks, yard games, and the big open yard for playing. We reserved an entire day to enjoy the house and the yard. We definitely plan on going back.

Great Family Vacation
My family of 12 ranging from grandparents to grandkids stayed at this house for a big family vacation. The house was great, even roomier than the pictures show. Tons of toys and games for the kids to play with and you can walk right down to the water from the property.
The owner was extremely helpful and answered all our questions and gave us lots of good tips/recommendations for what to do in the area. I would highly recommend this property if you have a big group. Added bonus, was that every bedroom had its own bathroom so it was perfect for our group with multiple couples/families. Can't say enough good things about our stay here, we had a blast!
I would highly recommend this property, and especially if you have a big group.

We loved our week spent in Maine. Our family ranged in ages from 8 months to 68 years and there was something for everyone! We loved having a bathroom for everyone! The eating area and kitchen which was so well stocked with dishes, cooking utensils, and a pantry with most everything needed to compliment our meals was beyond anything we have ever experienced in a vrbo. We enjoyed eating both in and out and the picnic table could almost accommodate all 12 of us plus two babies. Our lobster boil was a big success and we all loved every last bite!Almost all of us kayaked at least a couple of times and we enjoyed watching the sun set over the water. The lawn was so big we could have a game of soccer which included almost the entire family. Our weather was so beautiful we didn’t spend much time indoors, but if we had, there were games, puzzles, toys, and activities for us all to share together. We were so close to the National Park that we could quickly get to any hikes, lakes, or boat tours we wanted to participate in. We loved our week, and are looking to return again in the near future! Thank you!

Beautiful large space with loads of amenities
This gorgeous home on a large piece of waterfront property gives ample space for twelve. We appreciated all the movies/books/games that were available when just relaxing at the house. Definitely a repeat home!

Our family of 11, including adult, college- and high school-age kids, were very comfortable!
There is plenty of room to spread out and we love the number of bathrooms — so helpful when a large number of people are trying to get out the door in the morning. The house has everything you need for a fantastic and relaxing Maine vacation — kayaks, lobster pots, board games, and lots of brochures and maps to help plan your stay. It is close to everything, yet quiet and peaceful at night. The house is clean and comfortable. I especially love that the table is large enough for a family of 11, providing plenty of room for family meals and board games. This was our second stay at the property and we will definitely be back!

A Beauty in Bass Harbor
The two homes we rented were charming ,clean and offered a lot of thoughtful details:games ?DVDs ,books to read etc. Every bedroom had its own bath which is almost unheard of in Maine. We've been coming for almost 30 years. The property was beautiful but unfortunately mosquitoes this time of year rendered the lawn almost unusable( now if the owners could find a remedy for this...). The location was ideal;30 minutes and we were deep in Arcadia National Park. My family likes to hike and play golf This house is well-located for these two activities.

"Best Vacation Ever"
"Best Vacation Ever" is what our 10 year old grandson announced at the end of our week July 23-30, 2017. Our 11 family members inlcuding my husband, myself, our son, daughter, in-law chldren and 5 grandchildren ages 6-13 had a fantastic week at the Maine House at Summah Rye.
The beautiful views of the water, the quiet location and the spacious house and rooms made for a relaxing, enjoyable week. We went kayaking, exploring, picked blueberries, had s'mores around the campfire and played kick ball, crochet, and wiffle ball in the spacious yard, and relaxed on the porch and watched the sunset.
The house was extremely well stocked with more than suficient linens, kitchen appliances and indoor games for quiet evenings. When we needed something, it was there.
It was an easy drive to Acadia, the town of Southwest Harbor, Echo Lake, and Bass Harbor Lighthouse. Be sure to get fresh home made pie from the little house in Southwest Harbor, ice cream from Gott's and visit the farmers market on Saturday morning.
We highly recommend Summah Rye in Bass Harbor for your large family vacation. From the Leach/Askins family - Thank you Natascha for sharing your house and making the process so easy.

Very comfortable house with everything we needed!
This house was perfect for a small family gathering of ten folks from 11 years old to 74. The bedrooms are good size and since each has its own bathroom everyone had his/her privacy. The main first floor spaces - dining rooom, living room, kitchen - are spacious and the windows are easily opened everywhere. It really has everything you need and is close to very good restaurants in Bass Harbor. Having access to a washer and dryer was great. We hiked various easy trails nearby, hiked and drove to Cadilllac Mountain and took the Islands Tour to Frenchboro on Captain Eli's lobster boat. Although Bar Harbor is within 30 minutes and we went there a few times exploring, there was plenty to do around the rest of the island to keep us busy. My favorite space of the house was the wrap-around front porch where I could see our small end of the harbor and watch the tide come in or go out. This is a very special property!

An amazing week at an amazing property, Maine House at Summah Rye
Our family of 9 had an incredible week July 9-16, 2017 at the Maine House at Summah Rye at Bass Harbor and the quiet side of Mount Desert Island. This was the second of what we hope to be many biennial gatherings for our family, which included my wife and me, 5 adult children/son-in-law/boyfriend and granddaughters ages 3 and 1.
The property was spacious and provided seclusion, quite and solitude, just what we were looking for. We were greeted most mornings by does and fawns and enjoyed the views of the water and tides. The supply of kayaks, paddles and life vests provided gentle rides along the harbor. The little girls burned energy running throughout the yard and playing the wonderfully provided supply of games.
As for Maine House itself: wow, there are not enough superlatives to describe this roomy, comfortable, spacious home. It really did feel like home! Some of our favorite memories were simply being spread across the living and dining rooms, reading, painting, watching the little girls play, working on jigsaw puzzles and creating delicious meals. We could not believe how well stocked the house was, particularly the kitchen; we had everything you would need! Lots of info on area attractions. Great fireplace and supply of wood. We tried out the grill with lobster. The rooms provided nice privacy when we needed it, beds were comfy (we slept like logs!), bathrooms and showers worked great, lots of nice towels, washer and dryer were very handy.
The property is so close to all you would ever need: Gotts and the IGA were close by and were favorite stops for groceries and essentials. We felt like locals at Southwest Harbor and Somesville and got to enjoy the repertory theater (The Velveteen Rabbit), Strawberry Festival and Flamingo Festival and the parade! We visited the organic farm, pie stands, Echo Lake, Thurstons & Beals for lobster, an Island cruise and climbed Beech & Acadia Mountains, all only 5-10 minutes away.
When we needed very active venues, is was only 20 minutes or so to Bar Harbor, bikes and the carriage roads, Cadillac Mountain (a strenuous hike up and later in the week a beautiful sunrise), Jordan Pond and beautiful scenery.
This was my wife and my second trip to the quiet side and there is no question we will be back! We give Maine House and Summah Rye our highest recommendation; it is an exceptional property and would be perfect for family gatherings and reunions.

The Maine House drew in our family beautifully, and we enjoyed it every day. This extraordinary home is well located on Bass Harbor and was nicely suited for our family of 6 adults and 2 small children. The owners seeemed to have anticipated our every need, too.
Bass Harbor is on the quiet side of Mt. Desert Island, close to hiking and a lighthouse, but half an hour from the crowds in Bar Harbor. Copses of trees surround the property on two sides, so the house feels private even though civilization is just down the road. The large lawn leads down to the water. The kayaks were ready to go. Each evening we were treated to an exquisite sunset over the water; the sky varied from rose pink, to violet, and finally to a star studded indigo.
Our grown daughters and sons-in-law stayed upstairs with the little ones in the three upstairs bedrooms with three baths. My spouse and I chose a downstairs room that also had a bathroom plus a powder room across the hall. The furnishings were just right: well appointed and comfortable.
These owners must be intuitive to guests' needs. Want to boil lobsters? We found a huge lobster pot in the pantry. How about playing a board game with a four year old? A huge selection awaits. Need a flower for the dining table? We picked a pink peony by the porch.
I highly recommend the Maine House. We loved it!

We rented the Maine House and the Lobster Cottage for a family vacation in the summer of 2016. 15 people in total, ages 8 to 69, stayed for a week. The houses were absolutely stunning! Clean, beautifully decorated, with a wonderful breeze and comfortable temperatures all the time. The Maine House was big enough for everyone to have his/her own space, but also has beautiful gathering spaces (such as the dining room table) for everyone to come together for meals or to work on a puzzle. There are so many amenities, such as: the stunning kitchen, jetted tub (the kids loved that), a washer/dryer, and a margarita maker (one of my personal favorites!). The Lobster Cottage is very quaint and homey, with plenty of space for the five family members who stayed in that house. The property is within 30-45 minutes of all island activities, giving renters easy access to absolutely everything this island has to offer. My family walked from the property to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse, we hiked daily in the Acadia National Park, swam at Echo Lake, did the Island Cruise, visited the shops in Bar Harbor and my kids did the airplane tour of the island. Although there are a lot of activities on the island, we frequently chose just to stay at the property for part of the day. The kids had an ongoing Nerf-gun fight, they spent hours on the lawn playing soccer, we played countless games of hide and seek (adults included), we built a fire in the fire pit and made s'mores, gazed at the night sky, identified constellations and admired the beautiful stars.
The owner of the property is a delight to deal with. We had to contact her with a couple of questions. She responded quickly and gave us all the information we needed. Even our teenagers (we had three teenagers on this vacation, ages 17, 15, and 13) did not want this vacation to end. We loved our time at the Maine House and Lobster Cottage so much that we already requested a reservation in 2018- this time for two weeks!!!
I highly recommend renting this property to anyone wanting to vacation on Mount Desert Island. It is beyond perfect for people of all ages.

The Maine House was everything we hoped for and more for our 3 generation family vacation. There was plenty of room inside and out for 7 adults and 6 children. We especially appreciated how clean, comfortable, and child-friendly the house was. There were plenty of games, dvds, toys, balls and nerf guns (the favorite). The adults loved the view, fire pit, kayaking off the property, and the comfortable beds at the end of the day. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything we needed for feeding our crowd. The owners leave a wealth of information about the area so it was easy to plan out each day. They also made the rental process from booking to check-out very easy. The location on the quiet side of the island was out of crowds but near enough to the town of Southwest Harbor to make last minute grocery or take-out food runs. There was plenty of hiking nearby and Echo Lake was a hit with all. We had a fantastic week that created great memories. I'd love to do it all over again!

We loved your house and the location was perfect for everything we wanted to do! Everything was beautiful, clean, and well organized -- especially welcoming when we arrived at 1 a.m.! We had plenty of space for our kids and ourselves. Our family owned a farm near Chautauqua, New York, for many years and your house and property reminded all of us of the fun we used to have there, so we felt quite at home! The kids went kayaking from your property and had a blast and we also enjoyed campfires, watching the stars, and s'mores from your fire pit. It was very easy to get to Acadia and Bar Harbor and we really appreciated all the brochures and maps to help us get around. We spent some part of every day in Acadia, either hiking, biking, or kayaking and visited Bar Harbor four or five times. We enjoyed dinner in Southwest Harbor (although I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the restaurant -- it was on the right side of the road) and my sister-in-law bought a blueberry pie from the bakery there to celebrate my birthday (it was delicious!). We had a fantastic shoreside lobster dinner at Abel's after church on Saturday night and the kids (all high school and college age) ate BBQ and played mini golf in Bar Harbor while my sister-in-law and I had a quiet dinner in Bar Harbor and went to a book signing at the bookstore there. Some of our favorite hikes were Wonder Land, Gorham Mountain, the Bubble, Thunder Hole, and the view of the stars from the top of Cadillac Mountain was fantastic. From the first day, we were all in love with Maine and your house, so of course, we would love to come back one day. Thank you so much for our wonderful week!

Our extended family of 12 enjoyed a very pleasant week in Maine House and Lobster Cottage located in Bass Harbor. The property was clean, comfortable and well outfitted reflecting the fact that the owners and their family use the property themselves, it is not just a rental . It is located in a quiet area , on the water about a ten minute drive from the village of Southwest Harbor where there are stores, including groceries, and restaurants. There is also a fine seafood restaurant right in Bass Harbor. The property is a 30 minute drive from Bar Harbor and the entrance to the Acadia Park and Loop Road.

My girlfriends and our husbands had a wonderful time on our first visit to Maine. The house was beautiful!! It was well equipped with everything we needed. We hiked up Cadillac Mountain (quite a challenge), walked along the ocean, kayaked on Long Pond (which I would recommend for young & old) and rented bikes from Acadia bike rentals and rode along the Carriage Path. (My bike had a tire blow right near the stables and they brought me a replacement bike within 30 minutes). The food was excellent in both Bar and Bass Harbor( tried lobster rolls for the first time). We bought fresh lobster from the dock in Bass Harbor(much cheaper) and had a wonderful dinner at the house! The scenery was gorgeous, just like I imagined. This is a trip we will never forget! Thank you for sharing your home!

I have a troop of Girl Scouts (Junior High to High School aged) who saved for two years to travel to Maine. I submitted several requests through agencies explaining we were a group of older girl scouts traveling. Many properties were not interested in having a group of girls stay. Natascha was so excited to have us, kept sending us tips and info of places to check out! It was nice to feel relaxed about the place we were calling home for the week. The house excellent for 8 teenage girls and 3 adults - the bathroom with every bedroom definitely kept the peace between everyone for the week. It was a magical trip for all of us - we explored the island, got to do some volunteer work in Acadia, and were out to dinner every night! Thurston's, Grumpy's, and Little Notch Bakery were minutes from the house and excellent! Even though our goal is to explore new places each trip, there was much talk about coming back to that house again - not area - house again! It's a beautiful property with many possibilities! Thank you Natascha!!
