The Lancewood Neighborhood Community in Cashiers, North Carolina, is located below Sheep Cliff Mountain along the headwaters of the Horsepasture River. Lancewood was once part of an Old Indian Trail and a gold mine tract. In 1929, Talmadge Seldon Lance (note the T.S. Lance marker located at the entrance of our neighborhood), his wife Maude Pinner Lance, their teenage children, and friends of theirs moved here from Asheville. In 1932 they bought a saw and started a lumber yard. Their original homestead was located on what is now the entrance to the Lancewood Neighborhood. T.S. and Maude Lance were successful with their lumber business and eventually started building half-round log cabins for the buyers of their lots in the subdivision they named Lancewood. They built roads and dams for two lakes and surveyed about 65 lots, some with small acreages and some with larger acreages, all on the former gold mine.
