Just across the road is a sweeping sandy beach, with stunning views to the Sutherland mountains beyond. The small fishing harbour has a pier and a variety of small local craft. It also boasts an excellent seafood restaurant, pub (seasonal), café and a traditional links golf course which is open to visitors. The area is renowned for its archaeological sites, and at the nearby Tarbat Discovery Centre there is a fascinating display of Pictish, Norse and Medieval artefacts, and the historic Tarbat Ness Lighthouse, which can be accessed by road or scenic coastal path, just 3 miles outside the village of Portmahomack. Within 10 minutes’ drive lies the oldest Royal Burgh of Scotland. Predominantly built with local mellow sandstone, Tain is a charming historic town and offers an excellent selection of small shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs, as well as a wide variety of sporting and recreational facilities, including tennis courts, public gardens, golf club and bowling club, all of which are available to visitors. It is ideally located for exploring the whole of the Highland region. Other places of interest nearby include a whisky distillery centre, home of Glenmorangie single malt, the famous Falls of Shin, one of the few places to see salmon leaping close to hand, and the enchanting town of Dornoch, with its magnificent cathedral, award-winning sandy beach and championship golf course.
