Upon arrival, the hosts welcomed us kindly and showed us around the apartment, indicating where everything was located. They provided us with a bottle of red wine and some fruit. They also mentioned that there is a very strong WiFi connection in the apartment. The location of the apartment is close to the highway, making it easily accessible.

Unfortunately, the apartment was a huge disappointment. Both bedrooms had a bad smell, a strong "grandma" odor, but it might be due to dampness, I'm not sure. The smell was so strong that I woke up on the first night and could hardly sleep because of it. Although there were several air fresheners placed in the bedrooms, on the second day we had to buy a stronger one for ourselves to endure the smell. What was even worse was the strong urine smell in the first bathroom. I would compare it to cat urine. The window in this bathroom was open day and night, but it was still unbearable, we couldn't even use this bathroom. On the second day, I started looking for another accommodation, but in the end, we stayed because we had already paid in advance, so we knew we wouldn't get the money back, and unfortunately, we couldn't afford to pay for another place. We thought we would be out all day anyway and we could endure the sleepless nights. Most of the equipment in the apartment is old and worn out, some of the kitchen utensils are also worn out and dirty. I had to wash everything before use. The kitchen cabinet under the sink also stinks. The WiFi in the apartment only works in the living room and dining area, not on the terrace or in other parts of the apartment. The mobile network only works properly in the dining area, you can't even make a call in the room because the line is bad, and there is no data traffic in the rooms. So if someone needs to work, they can only do it from the dining area. The apartment is dark, you always have to turn on the light in the kitchen and living room, even in the morning/daytime. The apartment is full of the owners' own stuff, decorations, which makes it impossible for a person to feel "at home". The bed linen is not the right size, the towels are old, and the umbrella is broken. The remaining water in one of the coffee makers was stale, and the bottom of the other coffee maker was moldy.

I was a little apprehensive looking at some of the photos of the apartment on the website, but was reassured by all the positive reviews. The apartment is in a nice, quiet area of Puerto de la Cruz. It is spacious, clean and the kitchen is very well-equipped. Detlef met us at the apartment on arrival and was helpful.

The situation may be different in summer, but whilst we were there the terrace got no sun at all at any time (even when it was beautiful weather). I struggled to dry any washing on the terrace, even when temperatures were around 25 degrees. There is also no view or outlook at all, as the apartment is completely surrounded/enclosed by other buildings. The dining area is an extension built onto the original apartment (using much of the terrace) and has had the effect of reducing daylight into the living room/kitchen area, where it is dark and gloomy all day. The bathroom towels, tea towels and bedding were all old, worn and of a poor standard. Two of the tea towels were in the form of 1987 calendars and others were covered in holes and old stains! As for the bath towels, let's just say they had exfoliating properties! The bedding was a particular disappointment. Only 2 pillows were provided for the double bed, both of which were feather (to which I am allergic). There was one other (non-feather) pillow in the second bedroom, but no others. There were no pillow protectors used, which (especially given that feather pillows are not washable) seems unhygienic. There was a poorly-fitting stretch towelling sheet on the bed, no top sheet and (for some inexplicable reason) 2 single duvets! Spare bedding provided was all of the same poor quality. Basically, we found ourselves having to go out and buy bedding the day after we arrived in order to get a decent night’s sleep. The owners have filled this apartment with ornaments, bric-a-brac, knickknacks and plastic plants, but in my opinion they would have done better to spend their money on new bedding and towels. One last note, as others have mentioned, parking can be problematic. Carrying heavy shopping from wherever we managed to park the car was quite a struggle. Sadly, given that the negatives far outweigh the positives for us, we will not be returning.

Balcony/terrace didn’t get any sunshine but not any fault of the hosts.
