Location, Afternoon Tea, bed and pillows
I only stayed one night so I couldn't try the breakfast because we leave early at 3 AM

Beautiful location set in gorgeous grounds. The room was comfy and breakfast delicious.
On the day we booked to stay, there was a Corporate away day that took over the entire grounds. We weren't notified this would be the case when we booked.

The estate is beautiful. The standard room we stayed in was nice, spacious, had a comfortable bed etc. They were able to cater to our vegan diet.
The only thing that could be improved during our stay is if the decor of the standard room we stayed in was more in keeping with the estate. The room felt like it could have been anywhere - with modern furniture, wallpaper etc. I wouldn't expect Tudor era furniture, but exposing some of the original details of the room would be nice.

Comfortable hotel very near to Gatwick airport and unlike standard airport hotels. Staff were friendly and location very good.
Rooms are quirky and in the room we had (Arundel) the headroom in the bathroom meant the shower was difficult to use. Also, the electric tripped out a few times and as there are no phones in the rooms I had to visit reception to get it fixed.

Staff very helpful
Dinner - this is the first time I haven't enjoyed the food - the souffle was dry and tasteless, but I gave them the benefit of doubt and ordered so balsamic glaze to flavour the dish up and did eat it.
I ordered lamb steak for main, it was tough and didn't taste nice, the potatoes and mushroom and onion were also very not great- i sent this back - the staff were very good about it and did offer to get me something else and I also didnt get charged
I ordered the crumble for pudding - not the best crumble had very hard pieces but the ice cream was lovely

The old building the bed was comfy very welcoming staff
It was very cold even with the heating on. And didn't see no ghosts gutted

We liked the character of the building. The bedroom was very comfortable and warm. We were staying in the main house. The bathroom was spotless and very spacious. Lots of hot water. The breakfast was tasty and a good choice.
The hotel was very quiet while we were there which was a pity because it is a beautiful building. It was difficult to have a private conversation in the lounge as it was so quiet. We had made a dinner reservation in the restaurant, but as the hotel was quite the restaurant closed, and only small choice on the bar menu.
Also, a quirk of staying in an old building the shower head was very low, it didn't bother us, but might annoy some guests.

the extra hidden costs
£40 for a dog which included one blanket and two bowls !! the food was very average frozen burger plus compulsory service charge added without knowledge the wine was over priced.

The breakfast was fine, but we didn’t have time to fully enjoy it, as we had a flight to catch
We were hoping to get an earlier breakfast as we had a flight to catch

Historic and wonderful. The most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. Delicious breakfast with good variety.
I didn’t like the fact that I could only stay for one night!

great old fashioned traditional vibe with all the traditional elements to a old Manor House stay. lovely for afternoon tea. the night porter was a hero as we arrived into Gatwick after a 10 hour flight delay and he was so kind in helping us navigate the journey to the hotel as main roads closed for roadworks
breakfast was odd . Help yourself which is fine but cold plates and tables too small for the chairs.

Amazing! Only one word to describe it

The hotel is as shown on the photographs and is very picturesque in a quiet location. The staff were very helpful and could not be faulted. The hotel was far from full only a few guests apparently staying, we were contacted a day or two before to ask if we would like to but a bid in for a better room option at a reduced price, which appeared to be a good option and we took this offer up. We left very early so cannot comment on the breakfast but for a hotel close to a Gatwick airport the lack of any early offering was poor.
Room was cold with no heating; the radiators did not respond to thermostats at any time during our stay. Bathroom was cold and door very stiff. It needed all your weight to pull it either way. The choice of food was very poor, we contacted hotel in advance about my wife being Vegan which did not appear to have been conveyed to the chef in advance and as a result very limited options offered. Regarding myself, my wife explained that I have a very plain diet, the poultry option was also absent from the menu after being assured that it would be available. The Bank Holiday used as the reason. Another guest was told the same thing apparently, they had sold out during the day. It would be strange in a hotel environment to only buy fresh produce and thus limit choice.
I settled for the fish dish, which, when it arrived was exceptionally small, and was expensive for what was offered.
In addition, house wine at £12.00 per glass was excessive plus 12.5% service charge added to all drinks and food as an automatic add on made the offering even poorer value.
Despite the beauty of the surroundings and the comfort of the bed, we are not inclined to stay at this hotel again.
