Enjoy a secluded shoreline home mid-way between the two parts of Acadia NatPark!
About this house rental
Nestled in Franklin, this charming house for R 9,551 per night is a great option for your next break. Come visit and enjoy the open layout and expansive design of our rental home! This home provides you with a unique experience of nature and her cycles of tides and wildlife in a secluded garden setting, yet you are conveniently close to all attractions in the area. The floor to ceiling windows facing the bay bay allow viewing of the yard, the bay and the wildlife from almost every room. This allow for you to enjoy the ever changing vistas the bay because of the changing tides. View the eagles, ospreys and seals feeding as the incoming tide brings in their food. At low tide when the bay empties out, the herons, and gulls feed in the mudflats. The house is secluded from the road with a nearly quarter mile-long driveway, and you will have difficulty seeing any other shoreline houses from your rental home and its extensive gardens. Watch the sunrise and sunsets while relaxing on the back deck or you can get closer to the wildlife by strolling down to the nearby shoreline using the well-maintained paths and steps down to the water’s edge. Please be aware that this large home has rooms and furnishings that are not included in your rental and are locked. These areas include the rooms off the recreation/pool room, the basement, the garage, rooms attached to the garage, and the garden shed. We do not allow the use of our electric piano and the gas fireplace inserts. The pool table located in the rec rooms is available for a fee unless your stay is 7 nights or more, in which case it is free It has a ping pong table top option in place of the pool table that you can choose if desire. This professional quality, competition-sized billiard table located in a formal expansive rec room, please contact us about fees at the time of your booking of this rental if you are interested in this option. The 3 bedrooms offered do not have “en-suite” attached bathrooms. The rental is located on the shoreline of Taunton Bay which is a tidal bay, and thus the ocean water comes and goes twice daily with the tide. All rooms of the house have central air conditioning/heating and most rooms have ceiling fans. There is a bedroom with a queen bed on the first floor. On the second floor there is one bedroom with a queen bed and a second bedroom with two twin beds. The full bathrooms on each floor are located down the hallway from the bedrooms. There is a second floor TV room and an open loft area for stretching and exercising. The kitchen is well supplied with cooking utensils and equipment. The formal dining room is spacious and inviting. There is a breakfast nook table in the kitchen area. Off the back deck, there is a roomy screened-in gazebo with a large dining table and seating for six guests with enjoying views of the bay. It is equipped with overhead lighting and an electric power outlet. There is a propane gas grill in the gazebo you can use which allows you to grill and eat in a screened-in area away from the insects. On the large back deck and patio area are fully reclining lounge chairs as well as swivel deck chairs and patio tables. Explore the pristine tidal inlets and the larger bay by kayaks you've brought with you or rented. You can only kayak when the tide is coming in or during high tide, as the bay's mud flats are exposed during low tide. There is a kayak rental company a mile down from our driveway with free delivery. Please inform us if you are thinking about kayaking off our shoreline, as we have important info about the tides and water safety. The clearly marked areas of the house that are not included in your rental are locked. These rooms serve our maintenance staff’s needs, as well as storage areas for rental equipment and supplies. Base rental rates are for up to four guests. There is a daily charge for each additional guest after 4. There are driveway cameras for security and safety monitoring only. The Mount Desert Island causeway is a 20-minute drive away from the house. Acadia National Park's Hull's Cove Visitor center is 21 miles from the house, about a 30 min drive. The scenic Park Loop Road for cars and the famous carriage trails for bicycles and walking begin there. The area-wide free shuttle bus system stops at the Visitor Center. The town of Bar Harbor with all of its restaurants, whale watching tours and craft stores is only a couple of miles further from Hulls Cove. Bangor Intl Airport is 39 miles from your rental; about a 50 min drive away, depending on traffic, which can be heavy and slow during the busy summer/fall seasons. Acadia National Park also includes a recently enlarged sister park on Schoodic Peninsula, 23 miles away from your rental house and in the opposite direction from Acadia National Park’s Mt. Desert Island location. The Schoodic section of Acadia National Park is a less crowded than on Mt. Desert Island features 7.5 miles of hiking trails and 8.3 miles of biking/carriage roads. There is a 6 mile one-way paved loop road that goes around the entire park along the ocean shoreline with spectacular ocean views, just like the loop road on Mount Desert Island. Your rental at our place is thus conveniently located half way in between these two National Park destinations! The house is well situated away from the traffic and pedestrian congestion and noisy distractions and 6 am Lobster boat engine noises that come with renting on Mount Desert Island. Your rental is conveniently close to the Ellsworth/Hancock town areas (5-7 miles) with your choice of restaurants, such as Mexican, Asian, Italian, and many other restaurants and fast-food places. There are grocery stores, pharmacies, and merchandise stores in Ellsworth only a few miles drive from your rental. The local lobster pounds and fresh farm produce farm stands are within 3-5 miles and many more lobster restaurants are located on the drive onto Mount Desert Island. In addition, there are nearby terrific day hikes just a few miles from our rental such as Tunk Mountain and Schoodic Mountain that offer nearly 360-degree views of the ocean and inland, as well as other state parks further north to the Canadian Border. The Roosevelt's historical family retreat, Campobello, is located just over the Canadian border from the town of Lubec, ME. As the entry way into the Bay of Fundy, the town of Lubec is an artistic and historical place to visit and is 78 miles away or about an hour and a half drive, an easy one-day excursion from the rental. So you see, there are a lot of things to see and do near your rental, as well as a 2 hr drive away!

My husband and our 3 adult children and their significant others stayed here for a family hiking trip in Acadia National Park and the property is scenic and serene. We only saw 1 bald eagle off in the distance so bring your own binoculars, but it was a great long weekend making incredible family memories.

Property and grounds are beautiful!

This place was so much better than the photos promised. The beauty and the seclusion it provided was necessary for us. Watching the osprey and the other wildlife added to the serenity. The house offered all we needed and more (ping pong was played many times). Even the one rainy day we had was an enjoyable experience as it helped us slow down and relax in such a comfortable space. We would easily go back again.

This home has a great view with acres of privacy. Some very good restaurants just up the road.

This house and the surrounding property are just gorgeous. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, with small treasures around every bend. Small garden decorations surprised us as we walked around the yard, and various lawn chairs offered a place to sit and read or just gaze at the bay. The large windows throughout most of the house allow for a great view almost everywhere you look. The location is very private with a long driveway and no other house in view. We loved everything about the house and its proximity to Acadia. We also enjoyed looking through the the books in the several bookshelves with books about the region as well as a great collection of classics! Great place to return to after a day of hiking or other activities.

This home is one of the nicest properties we have ever reserved. The house is beautiful and the property is amazing. The view from the back porch was so perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed the mornings and evenings there! Highly recommend it for adults! However, if I would not recommend for families with young children.

We had a lovely stay. Best stocked kitchen of any rental we have ever stayed
Outside space is amazing. We used gazebo when it rained. Saw a bald eagle several times flying across the bay
I would recommend.

This home is a vacation in and of itself! We came to the area to explore Bar Harbor, Acadia NP and surrounding areas- and wound up not wanted to leave the house! The house was spotlessly clean, well appointed, spacious, and had all the comforts of home. The property is such a peaceful oasis and the view is breathtaking. We would definitely stay again!

We loved our stay at this house. Beautiful surroundings near the lake, tastefully furnished house and quite, secluded neighborhood. Owners and property manager were super helpful!!

The view from the main room as we walked in took our breath away. The house and property are beautiful and secluded. The view of Taunton Bay was quintessential Maine. The owners were very accommodating and easy to communicate with. We would rent again.

We had a restful and inspiring trip while enjoying our stay at this home. We didn’t turn on the TV!! One of our daughters and myself read books and the other daughter loved playing ping pong with her father. It was a perfect location for all parts of Acadia National Park. We contacted the owner only once while we were there and received a prompt response. We didn’t mind the “no shoes” policy because we do same thing at our house. There is no en suite, but we didn’t mind. A very relaxing house to come to after a day of hiking.

Henry and Suzanne's house is in a remote, peaceful location with a spectacular view of the water from their spacious deck. We saw Eagles, Ospreys and other birds ever day. The landscaping with trees, flowers and several places to sit and enjoy was a bonus! The 5 of us had plenty of space and enjoyed most of our time on the deck. Kitchen was well stocked with whatever we needed. Loved the way the house was decorated. Ellsworth is 5 minutes with grocery stores and a cute downtown with several good restaurant options. It's a bit of a drive to Bar Harbor (35 minutes) so plan you day and evening trips accordingly!

The views of the bay and woods are marvelous. Always a variety of birds, a seal ... even an osprey trying to catch a meal!
The deck is a wonderful spot to relax.

Beautiful property, BUT…
Within 20minutes of being settled in to house., called contact number on check-in directions to inquire about where sheets could be found for pull out sofa. Owner was very upset we had with us more than originally proposed 4 staying. Note: even with the addition to our party we had less than the number the home advertised sleeping! Owner was condescending, lectured me on how I was supposed to let him know if number in our party changed before 4:00 that day.( I called him at around 6:30, when arriving). He talked to me over phone like I was not to be trusted, lectured me on how he would need to charge us $150 extra per person/day. He was lecturing me on not being forthcoming with him and insisted I let him know who would be staying the whole week and who would not and kept reminding me no one else is to be on his property and absolutely no parties!
I assured him multiple times my husband and I are two older professionals who are intending to find a change of scenery for our aging parents , spending some quality time with them relaxing around house and taking some short daily excursion to the park. I assured him we would be treating his house just as we would our own and take good care of things. Things he said and his aggressive, angry tones with me made it clear he had very quickly judged me as someone he could not trust. He continued harassing me with multiple texts for the first couple days, long after paying the extra charges to have the couple extra family members stay first three nights(2 extra= 7 people total for couple days).
We had a delay in paying via VRBO initially because my CC company placed a hold on my card b/c vendor I had used two days prior had been hacked. So….. I had to figure that problem out and then establish a new way to make the payment. When my husband called owner, to confirm exactly the amount we owed him with itemization and to assure upset owner we were trying to expedite payment, owner went postal!!
Cameras in & outside areas around house. We were NOT comfortable in this house!
No contact was ever made with us through rental manager, just the control freak owner.
We were also creeped out while we were there because My daughter and father in-law noticed certain windows and lights that were not on or opened would be opened and on periodically. Yes, these areas are locked off from renters and marked “private”. But who was coming and going on property while we were there???

Secluded private property with a wonderful view. Nicely appointed kitchen, living and recreation area as well as multiple patios and deck areas for enjoying the outdoors. Easy access to Acadia National Park and the harbor towns of Desert Mountain Island (30-40 minute drive). The Master BR is not available, so standard bed rooms with queen beds and bathrooms down the hall. Two full baths but no 1/2 bath. It worked for the two couples we had there. Overall a phenomenal experience vacationing Maine with this property to come back to each evening.

A clean odor free property in a spectacular setting. Owners are meticulous. We will be back. Renters need to be prepared to walk through public spaces to access bathrooms. Bring a robe.

We completely enjoyed our stay at this house! Loved it!
The outdoor areas of this home are amazing. You are right on the water with great views and a private beach. There are multiple areas for sitting and enjoying the view plus a fire pit.
Our first night we stargazed and the kids were thrilled! Watched the sunrise each morning. Beautiful!
The house is lovely, spacious and all about the views. Everything we needed was provided and instructions for how to use things were clear. We only stayed a few days and spent most of our time hiking at Acadia or in Bar Harbor. We had hoped to grill out one night and use the screened in gazebo but were late coming home from hiking. We wish we would have had more time to just relax in this house and really enjoy it more. Next time we will stay longer!

The property only had a "water view" and nothing more. A mudflat appeared twice a day and there was no possibility of kayaking or swimming. The common areas of the house were nice but the bedrooms awkward and the 2 bathrooms very oddly placed.. I think the owner did not want renters to use the best bedrooms and blocked them off. The fireplaces and piano were "do not use". Nice pool table.

We loved our stay! The house was very clean and the best-equipped VRBO we've stayed in. It was about a 30 minute drive to Bar Harbor/Acadia, but it was really nice to stay away from the crowds. The view is beautiful!! We said it was like having a piece of Acadia in our backyard :) We ate on the deck several times and sat in the screened-in porch at night. Our daughters (9 and 5) had a lot of fun walking along the waterline at low tide and checking out the snails (and even a crab).
This is clear from the pictures, but I'd mention that a couple of the bedrooms have high windows without shades (so it gets bright pretty early during the summer).
We had a great stay and would love to return!

July 2022 Maine vacation
This a gorgeous house with amazing views. We saw deer, chipmunks and a porcupine on the property. We went to Ellsworth and ate at Helen’s, union river lobster pound and Martha’s diner, all were excellent! Went to timber Tina’s lumber show, it was great. Drove to moose head lake for white water rafting (kennebec river), drove to Eastport for whale watching and took a seal and nature tour from bar harbor. Took a private tour of Acadia National Park, highly recommend this and all the tours! Also, went to schoodic peninsula…beautiful, then drove to bass harbor. All the sites were beautiful and a must see. The only recommendation we have for the rental would be upgraded mattresses and pillows, other than that the owners have everything you can think of to make your stay wonderful!

beauty and tranquility
We had only 5 nights here and wish it could have been a full week or more. Such a great house, such a lovely property, a whole private point to yourself. The sea view and landscaping are wonderful. Saw eagles and deer among other wildlife.
The house has more than all the amenities described; for instance, an array of spices and condiments are included in pantry items.
Cell phone service and internet wifi were great – very important to those of us who were still working.
Grocery shopping at two supermarkets and restaurants (loved Margaritas) in Ellsworth only 15 minutes away, 30-35 to Bar Harbor and Acadia. We enjoyed the Puffins, Lighthouses, & Seabirds Cruise by Acadian Nature Cruise out of Bar Harbor – saw seals as well as puffins and other birds. Some of us hiked in both parts of Acadia -- in the largest portion on Mt. Desert Island and in the smaller piece on the Schoodic Peninsula.
Henry was quick to respond to any questions we messaged.
The consensus is we would love to come back next summer.

First I'll put the conclusion up front. We would definitely stay here again. The property is very private and sits on the edge of the water. There is plenty of nature all around. We saw eagles, Horseshoe crabs, and a seal. If you have binoculars you should bring them. There is also a large outdoor firepit. We had a wonderful time at the property and in the area. So much to do around Acadia and Bar Harbor - all within 20-30 minutes, but you retreat to your own private house with no one around. The house was great. Just a few notes - The TV is on the second floor, not the first. The stairs are steep if you have young children. These aren't complaints, just to note based on your situation and preferences. We would definitely stay here again.
