Casino is away from the chaos and waste heaps of Ernakulam. It is a noble place. This 65 year old property is spacious. Plants and trees and colonial era drawings add to the charm. Casino has some wonderful people. Rahana made me feel welcome in Tharavadu the multi cuisine restaurant. I enjoyed the songs covered by MrJensen. Abhilash from housekeeping too made my stay near the pool a bit more pleasant.
The grass next to the swimming pool is littered with cigarette butts. Also there is a culture clash...visible at the pool and in the restaurant. Women and men swim almost fully clothed in the pool. They eat with their fingers... even when the food is noodles. For me quite a disturbing sight. I know people eat with their hands in India... But here it seemed out of place.

Swimming Pool
We booked Superior rooms to have a good View & more space.
When we went there they said that Superior rooms were not having any view, instead the Lower category rooms were having pool side view, seriously...?
Then they said that the Superior rooms were recently refurbished and are totally new, but we were given an old room only with a VERY VERY SMALL BATHROOM and old accessories and everything. Over night the room had Condensation and in morning we had a totally wet room, floor, clothes everything.
Then I had to be a little loud in my voice and get the room changed, and even after that we got a GOOD REFURBISHED ROOM after 3 pm...
Staff is too slow in responding...
They took around half an hour to get my bills ready during the checkout...
I think a lot of improvements and above all TRANSPARENCY NEEDED...

Calm place
To our misfortune, the telephone in room did not work and we were unable to contact reception or room service to get drinking water. The exhaust in bathroom was very slow. So the hot air stayed longer than usual. They provided a bath tub and no other place to bath. This caused difficulty to my aged father to stand inside it and have a bath.
The room was neat and tidy.
In the morning there is a rush. What i understood is that the staff were allotted to complete lot of tasks within a few hours. So they all are in a hurry in the morning (9am to 11am). The staff literally run to finish the tasks. So it takes longer to get staff to help you with luggage. This happened to us when we were checking out. We had to take all our bags and check out.
This rush hour is experienced in the restaurant during breakfast as well. We cannot sit, relax and have breakfast. The boys roam around and clear the table really quickly. (This is actually a complement, but they take the plates really fast that we can't keep the curries or so on table to have with next round of buffet.)
Dosas were very small (the batter poured is much less) and had to wait so long to get one as many guests prefer various kinds of dosas.
Dinner time is relaxing at Tharavadu Restaurant.
The seafood restaurant is not worth for value. All main course and side dishes are low in quantity. Fish moilee was not at all tasty..

Nice hotel with nice service. Breakfast with variety of food. Not near the city center but it is very easy to get transportation and the crossing by jetty to the Fort area is a very amusing and quick trip.

Th breakfast was good and the staff was friendly and responsive.
The location was remote and not close to anything.
8.0
- Very friendly and helpful staff
- Nice spacious pool area
- Excellent value for money (even considering that the hotel would rather have 4 stars according to international standards and not the official 5 stars)
- Big room
- While the immediate surroundings of the hotel appear to be ok, the whole Willingdon island is mainly industrial and port related; there are hardly any restaurants or shops nearby and even the ferry or bridges are not really walking distance (> 20 minutes)
- The bathtub plug had a leakage and the shower had modest water pressure

Staff appear to be tired of having to deal with guests.
Quality of staff in restaurants and service level in all restaurants is poor.
