It is an honour to stay in an exquisite Japanese style home. It feels as though you are stepping back in time. The house has the richness of culture and heritage, and the bathroom and kitchen have been modernised, creating an enjoyable stay. The cedarwood bath creates that authentic experience. The bedroom is quite warm even in the middle of winter, with extra heaters provided. Communication isn't an issue as google translate comes to the rescue, even when we had to change our check-in time.

Very atmospheric century-old minshuku. It was a great place to stay after walking from Magome to Nagiso. The host kindly greeted us when we arrived and explained everything clearly. Would definitely book again if we visit Nakasendo in the future.

This is a unique listing. It's an old property with original timber features throughout and traditional tatami rooms. Also the traditional japanese shower/bathroom was so cool. The bathroom where the toilet is is newly renovated. I tend to have trouble sleeping on futon on the floor but there was enough cushion so I felt supported. The experience of being in this space was my favorite thing about it. I was a solo traveler and had the whole space to myself. I also loved the town it is located in. Suhara has a lot of charm. And theres a 24hr 7-11 a short walk away. The property manager took time to explain everything I needed to know at check in. I had a great experience and perhaps the most unique building I've ever stayed in. I hope to return next time I hike the nakasendo or want an authentic japanese lodging experience. Just awesome.

Nestled in the heart of Suhara, this impeccably preserved traditional house offers a truly immersive experience that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone visiting Japan. The owner was very nice and accommodating. Notably, the house's proximity to the nearby station and a charming izakaya lends it an added touch of convenience and allure.

Absolutely beautiful property all around in a beautiful town. A big highlight for us was the care the man who runs the place had for getting us set up in the town. Would recommend for anyone looking to visit the area.

The property is well kept and staying there is an experience in itself. I got the whole house to myself and having a modern toilet and appliances but with a traditional bath was interesting. The host was very helpful and gave clear instructions. The location along the Nakasendo Trail enhanced the walking adventure.

Lots of space, quiet and very atmospheric
The futon wasn’t the most comfortable we’ve slept on

This wonderful house is hidden gem of both Suhara and booking.com. I expected an old house, but this house really takes you 150 years ago in time. There is lot of japanese decorations and artefacts, which I would consider as treasure. I had the whole house just for myself and could explore all the rooms. All paper walls/doors are movable and you always discover something behind them.
There is also a wooden (!) bathtub, where you can enjoy hot bath after long day of hiking Nakasendo. Toilet is on the other side modern, typical japanese (western) style. There is also a functional heater. 7/11 nearby.
The owner is very kind and eventhough he does not speak english, he is very good with technology and with online translator he can talk to you.
Staying in this house was one of the highlights of my stay in Japan, I am still in awe.

Big authentic house, with vintage furniture along great electronic devices in the kitchen and toilets.
Very kind and nice host, and great location to explore the Kiso valley and the Nakasendo trail.
Since all the house is made of wood, it was pretty cold inside the house, though we had warming in the dining room, bedroom. It was cold to walk inside the house, but maybe there is another warmers (we didn’t ask for it)

I had a very pleasant stay. The whole house is full with history but very well maintained and equipped. The house was a bit cold as I stayed alone but my bedroom was very warm.
Recommend for travellers who travel by car. If you use the train, better plan ahead as it is not very frequent.

amazing and beautiful house for those hiking the nakasendo. I walked the next day to Kiso-Fukushima and loved it. great to have 7-11 nearby
just a little difficult after a day of hiking to get to the accommodation and be able to also get food for dinner

The house is wonderful. Newly remodeled kitchen and toilets were very nice. The kitchen had everything you need to cook and serve a proper dinner. Shower toilets in both toliets. Wooden bathtub was a nice touch. There was a heater in every room.
The owner came to the property every day to ask if everything was ok and to find out what we were doing each day. We knew he meant well, but it was a little too much.

The house was beautiful and we had a very warm welcome and send off. We don't speak much Japanese, but had no problem communicating via iPad translator. The town is a wonderful place to explore and everyone we met was very kind.

A 160-year old inn right on the Nakasendo, we had the whole place to ourselves. Very well done blend of the traditional (hearth, tatami mat rooms) and state of the art (toilets, bathroom).
Having to plan a time to for the owner to show up to physically return keys seems unnecessary. A simple key lock box outside would do the trick.
