Dirty and old

The equipment was old and in poor condition. The onsen was dirty, the rooms old-fashioned. Absolutely not in keeping with the photos

Unclean and disappointing experience— do not recommend.

The bedding, at least, was clean. If you like miso, you will enjoy trying various kinds of miso at dinner.

I don’t normally write bad reviews, but unfortunately this place was so bad that it warrants an honest rundown. First of all, it’s dirty. Our room had a carpet covered with crud and random hairs when we arrived. There was also a pen cap in the corner from the last guest, so it seems like our room wasn’t cleaned before our arrival. The onsen room is covered in mold and also has carpets full of hairs and crumbs. The bathrooms are also tiny and dirty. The hallways are similarly filled with random stuff left around. Right outside our room, there was a box with several random things and toothbrush sitting on top as well as extra space heaters lying around. It appears that things get stacked in the hallways instead of getting properly sorted and dealt with. The website is also very misrepresentative. The website claims to offer vegetarian options, and I contacted the minshuku ahead of time to ensure that they could accommodate this. They assured me that they would. The website also writes that for the miso hot pot “A vegetarian option is also available upon request” and that the tofu hot pot is “our Vegetarian friends favorite”. Despite this, a staff member informed me that there would be fish in the food. When I asked about the claims to accommodate vegetarians as written on the website, he appeared confused and assured me that, as fish is central to Japanese cuisine, there would be a little fish in the food. It’s fine to not offer dietary accommodations, but to claim that dietary restrictions will be accommodated and then proceed to tell me that they won’t once I arrive in person and have already paid, is absolutely unacceptable. If you are a strict vegetarian or you have allergies, you cannot eat this food. Finally, the yukata— The staff did not provide us with yukata so we could not wear them to dinner and to the bath like all the other guests. When asked, they said that they didn’t have enough obi.

A good old place to get away from the city

- helpful staff … I saw many bad comments about the one male staff. It turns out that he is actually helpful ( from picking me up at the bus station, reminding me about dinner time, ..). His manner is straightforward in taking care of the guests ( unlike others I experienced at other ryokans) but I didn’t feel any bad intentions from him. So, please keep up the good work. - food…portion is more than enough with refilled side dishes , rice and soup - location…peaceful and easy to each by bus

- the room and onsen is outdated and has old design ( but temperature is comfy)…the overall services are below than expected for 3-star ryokan ( especially when I used to visit the 4-star one in Kyushu).

Serene and delicious

Ohara is an absolutely gorgeous place. I wish we could have stayed longer. So green and serene. The dinner and breakfast were so delicious and wholesome. A wonderful, fresh homegrown and generous meal, best enjoyed in the hotel's provided yukatas (robes) and slippers. The miso was fantastic and staff were very helpful and accomodating (frying the raw egg for our daughter, for ex). It felt more like dining in a home, rather than having a fancy kaiseki. But that was fine with us. Our Japanese-style room was comfortable and there were plenty of futons and blankets. Onsen was clean and water was a great temperature. Beautiful forest to look up into from the outdoor pool, and sound of frogs and rain at night. The view to the garden from our room was sublime. We also were able to get rides to and from the bus station. A short walk around the hotel revealed a beautiful and fascinating little neighborhood.

Bus 17 from Kyoto was a little hard to figure out...but we were helped by a local. Apparently there are two Bus 17s? Once we boarded the bus, it was easy. Just ask the driver if it's going to Ohara, then you'll be fine. We caught the bus in downtown. Ohara is the final stop, so that part was easy!

A beautiful and traditional experience in a relaxing location. The onsen experience was great, all the staff very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this to any friend visiting Japan

We had a wonderful time during our stay with delicious food and a luxurious onsen experience.

Dinner was delicious! We loved miso that was served. The staff were very welcoming to our young daughter. The onsen was amazing and very clean.

The shared bathroom on our floor was very small and we wished the toilets were bidet style like we have used elsewhere in Japan.

Exceptional

Perfect getaway in the countryside. Old world setting with friendly, helpful staff. I'm not a fan of shared bathrooms, but there were no issues with waiting a turn. The hot spring was wonderful. I had it all to myself right after dinner (about 645pm).

A relaxing and tradictional place

The place is beautiful and relaxing. The food has a great taste and is perfect for the cold weather. The onsen is perfect, very relaxing and clean.

Sleeping in a futon it's not that great when you've been traveling and walking arround Japan for a week, but maybe in other circumstances it would be great,

Friendly and helpful staff. Cosy stay.

The staff were helpful and accommodating of our requests (family of 7). They were extremely kind to do a pick up and drop off service at the bus terminal. Food was delicious (miso chicken hotpot), and the hot spring was the right temperature. Dipping in the big urn was a new onsen experience for me!

As we were given the rooms at the end of the corridor, there were quite a number of steps to traverse. With 7 peoples' luggage, it was quite a workout! The rooms were a little cosy too.

An incredible traditional Japanese onsen experience!

The inn is nestled on a narrow mountain road in the village. The owner and staff greeted us and made us feel comfortable from the start. The food is meticulously prepared and is delicious. Locally grown vegetables, mushrooms, homemade pickle, and potato noodles were sweet and crunchy! The rooms are traditional tatami mat with sliding doors. The view from any window is of the wooded areas, gardens, and village views. The natural onsen hot spring pools are a great way to relax at the end of the day after exploring Kyoto. We wish we could stay longer and hope to return soon.

I would have no issues with this stay if it were a fraction of the price - for this price, it has been possible for us t

well situated in Ohara with a convenient shuttle bus service. The room was reasonably sized and breakfast and dinner were very good. We had the onsen to ourselves.

Having stayed in hotels, ryokans and all manner of Japanese inns and minshukus over the last 3 months, this was by far the most expensive place we have stayed and in my opinion, was not worth anywhere close to the price which was paid. Doors in the onsen changing room were damaged and would not stay closed, meaning the changing room was freezing. The onsen was often lukewarm. Pillows in the room were hard and small, but the room was otherwise good.

Much and good hot pot food, super nice staff, enjoyable onsen

The staff was super super nice with us. They explained us how to use the onsen and eat everything during dinner and breakfast. They offered the shuttle to take us to the Ohara station. The amount of food is amazing and the miso tasted so so good. It is totally worth it just because of the food. Despite there are specific times to use the onsen (one hour women, cleaning, one hour men), we could enjoy it. We were afraid the onsen was very small but there are 3: one indoor and two outdoor. It was freezing outside (it was snowing in the morning) but the water was hot enough. They only prepared one bed as a sample but we thought it was actually nice to learn how to do it. The views were super nice from the room and dining hall. The room was hot, no problem with that. The Shared room was super clean. Go there if you wanna experience ryokan and onsen but you don’t have too much money or time to go to a far place and want to stay close to Kyoto.

The room smelled like cigarettes/smoking a little bit but it was not a problem. We only noticed it when we entered the room. Overall, NO COMPLAINS!!

Superb

The location was perfect (great place for taking a walk, breathing fresh air, landscape viewing), the whole experience was really great. I was doubting if I should go but I was happy that I did. I had a proper relaxation time just as I wanted: unique cultural experience, including the room, the yuukata, the food...

I was expecting the onsen to be a little warmer (it was ok but two other ones I had been to before were warmer - I guess it's a matter of preference). Also, it would probably be helpful to have clearer instruction for behavior of visitors (is it ok to go out at night? To return late from Kyoto? How loud can I be after certain hours?)

Good Experience

Soma was awesome!! Friendly and attentive. My mom and child doesn't take raw eggs. Upon request, he gladly brought to the kitchen and had them fried. He noticed we liked some specific sides from dinner and he prepared them for us again at breakfast. Thank you for your excellent service with a smile. The onsen was awesome too!!!

There is no hot water coming from tap. It was freezing cold to wash our hands or brush our teeth especially at night. Onsen has specific operating hours. Would be good if it opens 24hrs.

Traditional and friendly place for good price

this was my second stay because I like it very much. It is a traditional building with very nice onsen, including the rotenburo (the bath outside), good food and reasonable price. I came before the Autumn season so there were not too many people, the room was great with the view on the inner garden. The staff is very friendly. The dinner and breakfast are traditional Japanese meals, so do not expect coffee and toasts. The house is a bit old, but that is the whole charm. The walk to the bus stop, around 15min. is great, among the fields and the old type of village, the countryside. Very quite at night, only the sound of the stream.

Nothing for me to complain.

Great relaxation at reasonable price

This is a fantastic place for those who want to experience the traditional Japan for a reasonable price. As the staff informs in the mail just after the reservation, the place is a bit run out. But this is the minshuku style (not ryokan). I love the atmosphere of the old style. The staff very friendly and casual (not so formal as it might be in ryokans). The single room is small but has everything what is necessary. The bath and toiled are shared, and that is why the price is so much lower. The baths/onsen are great. I especially love the rotenburo, the onsen outside! The place is in remote part of Ohara (1 hr bus ride from Kyoto station). Very close to a great temple, Jakkoin, 5 min. walk. I was there first at 9am, and so had the temple for myself :) Walkable distance (15min) from the bus station across beautiful rural area. The food was great, nabe style, with many miso types to try (buffet style). I am definitely going back there.

Some of the guests with kids were a bit noisy but that is not the hotel's fault, I guess. I love the place.

Good

The Onsen was really nice The staff went out of their way to accommodate that I am vegetarian (the dinner and breakfast were traditional Japanese, i.e., containing fish, fish broth, bonito flakes, etc.). Although I do not speak Japanese and the staff know only very little English, they tried very hard to make the communication as good and smooth as possible.

Time for breakfast was pretty early for a weekend day (starting at 8:00 am. and closing at 9 a.m.) and checkout at 10:00 am. It would have been nice to have a bit more time in the morning.

Superb

The food (vegetarian options were available and we were asked if we have any allergies!) was amazing! The Onsen was very relaxing and quiet. The staff was very kind and helpful. The room was simple but beautiful. We liked to view outside the window.

The futon was a bit thin (but overall we slept well).

Very nice stay

The miso nabe was quite good! And the rotenburo so enjoyable! The staff also welcomed used in a relaxed way and we're quite flexible with our requests. The old rooms were confortable.

There is a low intimacy because of the thin walls, but it is to be expected in an old Ryokan building, I guess it's a part of the charm.

Exceptional

The baths were very nice. We particularly liked the tub-shaped outside bath close to the forest. The futons, blankets and duvets were warm and comfy, the room was clean, and the cute on the garden was breathtakingly beautiful. We had ordered the Nabe pot for dinner and we very pleased with our food. The venue serves six different types of Miso paste, all locally made, and a decent variety of side dishes to accompany the pot meats and vegetables. We will definitely visit again.
